David, in case you read this, I want to credit you for inspiring me to read churchills biography of the Duke of Marlborough. So far it is just as good as I was hoping it would be. Better actually. I'm beginning to understand why Churchill was considered to be a literary genius.

This is really outstanding - proper insightful, thought provoking history - I had a two hour car journey with my father in law at the weekend - we started talking about my son’s upcoming exams and about “source analysis” in the context of history and ended up mashing together an overview of how interesting this series was, with how interesting the early chapters of Laurence Rees’ book “The Holocaust” are which perhaps cover some overlapping themes around the rise of Nazism. Much better than any recent history related output on mainstream TV.

What evidence Government modernised RAF because Churchill advised it? He wasnt Marlborough talking to his monarch, it was Chamberlain and the Treasury that wanted security and value for money, and all was planned for war in a few years time, no imperative to delay modernization.

Marlborough would delivery victory after unbroken victory, only for the diplomat to squander the lives lost time and again at the negotiating table, but in the end, after gratuitous bloodshed, Louis IV's iron grip on Europe was broken - if some years later than necessary. The War of Spanish Succession was unmatched by measure of bloodiness until Napolean's rise a century later.

Both Churchills deserve Starkey's great praise, but it is a real stretch to equate Louis XlV with Hitler. Louis was no vicious, bloodthirsty, tyrant. He did wage war, and sought to expand his empire, but there was nothing unusual about this. England sought, and achieved, global hegemony, for centuries before, and centuries after, Louis. Wales and Ireland were the first victims of its aggression. Louis practiced realpolitik, as England has always done. Louis was, actually, by the standards of his time, generous to those who opposed him. He took no delight in the torture and execution of innocent, or even guilty, people. He was no Henry Vlll. His revocation of the Edict of Nantes was tyrannical. He was, alas, no saint. Nothing he ever did was as contemptible as the U.K.'s Opium Wars against China. Queen Victoria, through her ministers, was the biggest drug dealer in history. I'd like to hear Starkey on this subject. It is facile to seek symmetry in his subject matter, but it's a cheap choice, and it should be above a serious historian.

So what you're really saying is . . . a useful historical COMPARISON, is the same as "EQUATING" 2 national leaders, 2 historical periods, 2 international conflicts ... even if the author NEVER claims they are identical ... because that would be clearly untrue, ridiculous, & a mission impossible. Clearly both Churchills fought against tryranical, national leaders, bent on European conquest. The absolute monarchy of Louis XIV, & Hitler's NAZI regime were undemocratic, authoritarian, & arbitrary, unlike the constitutional monarchy, it's elected parliament & Prime Ministers who actually directed military affairs abroad. As for Wales, & Ireland being conquered by the English, the historical truth is French Norman lords subjugated those lands through force of arms, after first conquering the English kingdom in 1066, as you should know. No where in this 3 hour trilogy does Dr. Starkey "equate" the two military despots bent on European conquest, but suely you've heard the good professor say, History doesn't repeat itself, but it often rhymes," & no truer example exists than the medoldic comparison he has composed here. Your critique it seems is untrue on it's face, unfair in the extreme, &, I dare say, intellectually dishonest, but I invite any detailed defense of your unreasonable accusation, but leave any personal attacks, or emotionally driven replies outside this conversation please. It’s hard to imagine a less compelling analogy than the one between Nazi Germany and the France of Louis XIV. And however appealing it might have seemed to Churchill to employ a little bit of double entendre in the 1930s, it does strike one as rather stupid to reiterate it now, in hindsight, as a serious hypothesis.

Dr Starkey, I was following your descriptions of W.C's literary influence from his ancestor with interest until you made an utterly false statement.. You said the Left was part of Appeasement to Hitler when you know that is false. ' The Left",as you disparengingly refer to it, was always opposed to fascism- be it from Italy, Spain or Nazi Germany. It was your gang, the Conservatives, Baldwin, Chamberlain etc., that sought appeasement. An appalling abuse of your status as a historian to mislead and betray your profession. I have inscribed from your page and doubt will ever be posted because I love history and you are now a cringing propagandist.
