In return for a range of statutory privileges, strategically important harbour towns on the south-east coast undertook a corporate duty to maintain ships for the king’s use.

My bother Ralph was at Chatham as a naval trainee I remember him going in 1949 I think aged 15 years old on HMS Pelican

Already one can see the predilection of the British for close in battle tactics when opposing the French. Do you agree? I also got the introduction of archers as a sort of early light artillery aboard ships, perhaps a throwback to the Roman Galleys influence?

I thought the 'British Navy' was supposed to be called the Royal Navy. When did that change?

Hi David, It became the Royal Navy after the restoration of the monarchy in 1660.
