The Circassians (Adygheans)

The Adygheans are the second largest group of Circassians, and the name-sake of the Reublic of Adyghea. In this video, we get a glimpse of the history and culture of Adyghea and the local Circassian population. This modern Republic is a place where Circassians still follow their ancient customs.

MrPersonatus, I am Adigha. My mother and father are Kabardians. My father's mother was Abaza, and my mother's mother was Abzakh. We are one singular nation, though. We always have been, and we always will be. I uploaded two videos over the past two days. Neither referred to us as "Adighas", but as "Kabardins" and "Adygheans". I cannot change the videos, but I changed the titles. I agree that these videos are not 100% accurate.

They are all Circassian, but in the Circassian language they calll themselves адыгэ, the Kabardians, Adygeans, Shapsugh, etc. are divisions of the same адыгэ people.

It's a very old Pagan ceremony mixed with Animalism or Totemism. Trees are important part of their culture. They see trees as home of many deities and believe that they are reflections of the Gods. So they were sacred for them as symbols of these deities. Actually I read some research that suggests the word Amazon comes from an Adygea Warrior Princess named Amazen which means Mother of the Forest. Trees are still important for Circassians nowadays.

As I said they were not worship directly to trees but they worship the identities they represent. Also there are so many Nart stories that reflect these traditions. Given the nature of their homeland, and the wide Eurasian traces of tree worship these myths are not in themselves surprising. John Colarusso says it'a common tradition in ancient times. Also we had a group of chestnut trees in the backyard in my mother's home. The trees in the backyard were a small copy of their original home in Northwest Caucasus around Tuapse. My mother's grand grandmother was a pagan and they told me that she was praying under the chestnut trees in specific times. Even trees had their own Adygean names which are probably names of deities they represent.

Circassians from Adygea are known as Adygeans, from Kabardino-Balkaria are known as Kabardian, from Krasnodar Krai is Shapsug and from Karachay-Cherkessia is Cherkessians. Circassians from Kabardino-Balkaria are the most numerous.

Could anyone confirm my guess the Sheekoz family, who have a youtube channel, are Circassians? Dan has always called himself and his family Russian, but they live in Adyghea, and Dan's wife grew up with traditional Adyghean culture.
