Any attempt to show people in the past as they were really like would be a turn-off for a modern audience. Make no mistake about it, people of past times were TOUGH and ROUGH and were expected to be. Hey, I'm old enough to remember the last of the World War One generation and let me tell you, THOSE people were tough.
