Derek Blackmon of Detroit recalls the spirit of freedom and giving back that his mother instilled in her children. When Dr. King came to Cobi Hall to speak, Derek was in attendance. He recalls his mother saying of Dr. King that "He knew the danger, but he persevered anyway for us. And he didn't even know our names." His mother's words helped to put into context for him the Detroit Walk to Freedom.
