My great great grandfather owned slaves in Maryland, so at the time of the Emancipation Proclamation he did not have to surrender his slaves as Maryland was not a state in rebellion. Ultimately of course he did have to release them, and after that the plantation began to be sold off in increments until nothing was left.

The number of Black men in the Union army was just under 180,000 (not the 200,000 cited here). More than 33% of them would end up KIA.
