I saw The Clash in 1984, at Red Rocks Amphitheatre. I had just graduated High School, it was my first concert, and Red Rocks opened early, like 9:00 am. We grabbed EXCELLENT SEATS! 9th row... we played Hackey Sack all day, and drank the Wild Turkey and Coca Cola we were able to sneak in... what a great time. The Clash is AWESOME...!

To go from a gen 1 garage/punk band to writing tunes like this shows why the Clash is one of the best bands to come along. What they achieved in 6 years is beyond remarkable. Last great rock and roll band.

'Charlie' refers to the North Vietnamese soldiers. Charlie Don't Surf is a famous line from the film Apocalypse Now, spoken by Colonel Kilgore as justification for taking a beach at the Mekong Delta so the American soldiers could go surfing (from Wikepedia).
@Spraycando14 жыл бұрын
@bapyou The Clash did lift audio tracks starting in the early eighties. Their lyrics were supported by a lot of movies from an earlier period. Take the example of Kosmo Vinyl doing the voice over from Taxi Driver (Robert DeNiro) The whole exercise was a reflection on east & west culture. The original Clash toured the USA & Far East and made clear the culture differences between the two. Robert Duvall: Charlie Dont Surf. Marlon Brando: They wont let them write Fuck on their aeroplanes. Woo. Deep

I went to a gig The Clash performed in about 1983 and they were definitely sampling stuff from an Ennio Morricone soundtrack...can't remember exactly what but it was definitely from one of the Clint Eastwood westerns...possibly The Good, the Bad and the Ugly...did you already know when you added your samples?
@jostrum504 жыл бұрын
Wow, a reply from 10 years ago! The Clash regularly used a piece of music from Morricone called 'sixty seconds to what'. It was from the film ' a fistful of dollars'. I've never seen or heard voice samples from Clint Eastwood films at any Clash performance viewed, although they were used in the studio on Sandinista and Combat Rock. Mick Jones used samples extensively with BAD and with other bands he produced, notably Theatre of Hate on the 'westworld' album. Yes, I did know 😎
@theghostofcar46214 жыл бұрын
@@jostrum50 I seem to remember some voice sampling going on but I might be mistaken and just getting mixed up with BAD's Medicine Show...it's been nearly 40 years..😱

"Speaking of Bruce, many critics have pointed out that Springsteen appropriated an image from the film Night of the Hunter for "Cautious Man": the hero is a once-tough loner who struggles to stay married - with "Love" and "Fear" tattooed on the knuckles of his hands. Sound familiar, Joe? "From 'Death or Glory'!" Joe snaps, suddenly alert. "What about it?" Bruce uses the same image on his new record. "See...." Joe snarls and then stops himself - turning that cheek again.

Now our soldiers are fighting together in Afghanistan. But that does not mean that I love all aspects of the American mass culture. And believe me - don't have to go to North Korea. Okay, this is a quote from the article, 'The Exile Of Joe Strummer'. "The new Joe Strummer sure is an easy-going guy. He turns the other cheek so fast it looks like his head's revolving. Strumming his acoustic guitar for hours, he announces that he's decided to head to Eskimo country with his Fostex and folk guitar to cut his mature solo album. "I'm gonna get some furry boots and go sit outside an igloo with a four-track. Cut it straight to CD. I'm gonna call it Alaska." Ba boomp."

Sandanista was hated by just about everyone. I thought it was a masterpiece. Sure there are songs I skip but still play it often. It was a very experimental album that expanded their trials from London Calling.

And about 35 with the stranglers-They have 17 official studio albums +++ solo stuf and more b sides etc.
@unamiqueta14 жыл бұрын
Why do Americans always assume that criticism of their culture or politics is the result of jealousy? There are plenty of positive things to be said about the USA so it is therefore often easy to defend against criticism, but I would suggest to Braunheim that a forum relating to a song about American actions in the Vietnamese conflict is probably not the wisest place to start fighting that battle.
