1981-82 I went from being into Adam and the Ants to The Jam but in 1983 at age 14 I bought the first Clash album (still one of my favourite albums) and that was me hooked on them and punk. They had a healthy interest in other genres of music and diversified their sound album by album and like any band ahead of its time suffered both critically and financially I've just finished re-reading The Story Of The Clash by Pat Gilbert, well worth a read

Amy Lobenthal re London Calling, same year, 1983, I somehow found out that a guy my age in the same street had the vinyl of London Calling LP and I showed up on his doorstep, we'd never spoke before, and asked to borrow it and a friendship was born one of my cousins had the original vinyl of things like the US import of the first Clash album, the original Metal Box by P.I.L (first ever band I saw live, 1983 again) and original of The Feeding Of The Five Thousand by Crass but around 1986 he had no money and phoned a record dealer who came to his house and bought his entire collection for under £10, jeez re The Clash, I remember seeing Bankrobber on Top Of The Pops and was captivated and chatted about it in school the next day with someone I knew. Re buying the first LP, the first Clash single I bought I went into a record shop and saw one on the wall and bought it, got home and played it, it was The Magnificent Seven, and it totally threw me as I was expecting loud punk rock and was rather confused by what I was hearing last Clash vinyl I bought was a second hand copy of Sandinista last year, only album I don't have on vinyl is London Calling, funnily enough. I think Combat Rock gets a raw deal and doesn't get the recognition it deserves another book I recommend is Clothes, Music, Boys, the autobiography of Viv Albertine of The Slits re Blondie, fantastic band :)
@Chiquitica19709 жыл бұрын
cadd1969 Oh your poor cousin! That was a travesty, yikes. I always loved the Clash because they could not really be pigeonholed into what some considered should be true punk. While I loved the Ramones (still do) you had groups like The Circle Jerks, Descendants and others that filled that loud, super fast playing sound. Joe just wanted to evolve and sometimes it worked and sometimes it did not. I did not care for Give 'Em Enough Rope' but that is only my humble opinion. Do you like any of the Mescaleros albums? Combat Rock is good, but the radio and Mtv only ever played Should I Stay or Should I Go? Not enough play time for the other songs, except Rock the Casbah of course. That books sounds really cool, I will check that out. Ah yes the one and only Blondie. I was asked if I died who or what would I come back as. Why Debbie Harry of course. :) Cheers!
