The Clash are definitely one of my favourite bands - the combination of Strummer, Jones, Simonon and Headon was magical and packed with energy. The lyrics of Stummer and writing of Jones with the reggae influence of Simonon and the drumming of Headon produced some remarkable albums. I love all their albums, and i know it's often not a favourite, but i have a real soft spot for Sandinista - just jam packed with great songs, amazing diversity and for a 3 record album it was really cheap as i recall. i also love a lot of Strummer's solo work with the Mescaleros - anyway, great choice and great, great song.

Way back when you needed to go to Blues. Illegal clubs in Black communities and usually in the basement of a house spilling in to the yard. M.C.'s brought the music, imports from Jamaica, they played all night 'til dawn. To avoid being busted for selling drinks you bought raffle tickets at the door and handed them over as currency to cover the cost of a drink. Red Stripe usually. Every ticket a winner. Many British reggae artists would go through Blues in the U.K. and on to bigger things. Aswad in Babylon show the scene and how it worked, Well worth a watch.

@F1lmtwit3 жыл бұрын
@@WessexMan - His politics jumped around a bit in the 70's to the 80's: "But the U.K.’s artistic sorts despised the Tories and despised Thatcher. In 1977, trying to sound rebellious, Paul Weller (then of The Jam) told an interviewer he’d be “voting Conservative at the next election,” but by 1978 he was walking it back, and by 1985 he’d joined Red Wedge, a collective of bands opposed to Thatcher. (You never could have had this in America: a mainstream political tour named in tribute to Communist iconography.) Hating Thatcher-really hating her-was a fashionable pursuit engaged in by musicians who still sell out small arenas."
@JohnnyFriendly3 жыл бұрын
@@WessexMan Yes, this is correct - Weller and the clash were always good friends, never hated each other. But the OP is also correct about Weller's politics, not so much jumping around , but evolving from an ill-informed pro-Tory stance (although that was an off-the-cuff comment) to a more thoughtful left-wing outlook. Also remember Weller was only 19 in 1977 - I'm sure we all said stupid stuff at that age too.

As a younger punk rocker this song has a different meaning for me. At least the last few lyrics. I feel like Strummer predicted the future with the punk scene and counter culture in general. Many people including the far-right are saying things like “conservatism is the new punk rock.” Which is not true. The majority of the punk lyricists advocate against war and for social justice. Bands like Anti-Flag, Bad Religion, and NOFX advocate for plenty of these progressive causes that fall under left politics. But because some of the social justice trends are starting to be talked about in the mainstream some right wing show hosts want to advertise themselves as the new punk rockers or counter culture just because they say stuff that is offensive or unacceptable and they don’t agree with “social justice movements in the mainstream.” Also I will add that punk rock is a known as a left wing genre. Therefore there is still many things that aren’t being shown in the media that makes punk culture still relevant and because of the fight alone in today’s society for who is the counter culture newer bands like Bad religion and anti-flag are still relevant. So I feel like Strummer was warning us about the future of punk rock culture and the politics that go with it.

Obviously I "haven't seen" The Sex Pistols, The Ramones, The Stooges, The New York Dolls, The MC5, The Velvet Underground etc etc live because I was not there and therefore their music is not for my ears. Neither have I "seen" Leadbelly, Howling Wolf, The Three Kings, Buddy Guy, Muddy Waters etc etc. So I don't understand blues. I've also never "seen" Aretha, Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding, Sam Cooke, Etta James etc etc so I have no idea about Soul music. Utter music snobbery and so against the punk ethos it beggars belief.
