Just so you know, original director of this game has compiled a Director's Cut of Sonic 3D Blast. It's an almost-official romhack that fixes many of the problems with the game - there is a level select, speed shoes are actually useful, and most importantly - Flickies form an invincible shield around you and you can't lose them, making collecting them feel more rewarding and less of a pain. There's also a time attack mode, there's actually Super Sonic in the game, controls are less annoying...

@GeekCritique9 жыл бұрын
SeekerLancer Chaotix could have been just fine with better level design. The combi-ring itself works really well once you get the hang of it. And I agree, Tails Adventures is the kind of game that seems to set a good base for future titles. I think SEGA pulling out of the portable market the next year was the reason it never got one.
@ToonReel0019 жыл бұрын
The Geek Critique I get the feeling the combi-ring may have been a reason the level design ended up so bland. The prototypes and unused sprites suggest that a lot of standard Sonic gimmicks would have been used originally, but they couldn't make it work with the physics. Add to that it being rushed before they could even try fine tuning it that much.

Wow. Some of your views of this are actually worth listening to again, you offer new perspective and fresh eyes to the series that some (and even myself) don't think about. What baffles me is why some of the games were discontinued such as Tails' adventures, it looks good, makes use of gadgetry (at the time) which is great for a character associated with mechanics. Then you have choatix which seems to suit knuckles style of adventures as he's more a suitable variable character (fast, scale walls etc) that he looks best for a game that trains players on using combination skill. It makes me wonder if the sonic franchise were too focused on making sonic the cash cow and advertising his sole attribute (speed) that as the consoles entered 3D and Sonic's gameplay and pace were about impossible to replicate on the next consoles, that they had no one else to fall back onto to keep the franchise flying high. Hence creating 'shadow' because he's a darker sonic etc And that they had long relegated other characters new to the series to the background because there was no vision or attempt to create new stories for these characters, who are now have to be tagged under a sonic game to even exist. It does sound harsh but to me that's wrong with the franchise it depended too much on one character and didn't want to branch out too much, in case of risk interest from sonic would be sidelined. Now sonic is regarded as an example of a 'has been' with no one to be the plan B and keep the franchise going noticeably well.

@martiusr24049 жыл бұрын
The Geek Critique - It's really great to hear that you're not totally depreciate and "dissing" Sonic R. It's rather the game for someone, who already know (and like) Sonic series, but still it gaves some pleasant and "light" gameplay. I've played in PC version, don't know if it's true that this one is a bit better than release on Saturn, but anyway - even the control is not so horrible as many people says. My ears are melting when I'm hearing the music in this game (BTW - is there any way to swap it?), and five tracks are not enough for any racing game, but these are the most annoying lacks. Ok, I admit that it's nothing special, but I still like it. Yeah, I admit that it can be a bit hard to explain :P I really regret that probably I will never be able to play in Knuckles & Chaotix on my Mega Drive. It's really hard to obtain cartridge with this game without ruining the wallet (especially since I have PAL console - PAL carts on 32X are almost like luxury goods), not to mention that the same 32X PAL is also quite expensive. Stupid region locks :( It has some special status nowadays - no re-relases in any form, only (not very popular even then) 32X. I know that it has opinion of rather mediocre title, but still it's very tempting. And I DEFINITELY share you sentiment in case of Sonic 3D Blast :) (no matter if we're talking about MD/Genesis version or Saturn/PC version), I've played in many Sonic games and enjoyed them, even such as mentioned Sonic R or even Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode 1 (yes, even this one!), but Sonic 3D Blast is up to this day one of these Sonic games, which were for me totally boring and totally not "engaging". It's quite surprising that "classic" era of Sonic (let's say that it was everything before Sonic Adventure :P) ended in so unspectacular way - no "full-pledged" Sonic title on Saturn, and in fact the only one which was completely new was Sonic R. Well, I'm really curious what you'll say about Sonic Adventure in next part, and for now - well deserved thumb up! :)

I just don't understand, I will *never* understand why Sega didn't just make a badass super smoothly animated and detailed sprite based "next gen" 32-bit 2D Sonic game, instead of canceling the franchise all together. The Saturn was not built for 3D graphics, it was designed as a 2D powerhouse and a 32-bit 2D Sonic would have been amazing! It could have helped sustain peoples interest in 2D games as long as they were great. Everyone was being close minded at the time, becoming obsessed over 3d 3D 3d blah blah, but look what happened, the demand for 3D caused Sega to stupidly cancel the franchise instead of make it emphasizing the Saturn's 2D strength. It's all just so stupid, and another nail in the coffin as to why Sega in the mid nineties was a *terrible company*.

Seeing 'Sonic the Fighters' now really tempts my imagination into thinking "What if Sonic '06, if not another attempt at an Adventure style game, was headed if not handed to SEGA's Ryū ga Gotoku Studio? (Yakuza developers)", especially since whilst I can't speak for Adventure, 06's hub certainly makes me think Sonic Team were trying to achieve something similar to what Ryū ga Gotoku/Like a Dragon does & Shenmue before it did (Which SEGA AM2, developers of many games including Virtua Fighter & Sonic the Fighters, also developed). Those guys are utterly seasoned in hub-worlds, have a team of musicians including Hidenori Shōji that create consistently fantastic & intense music, and their combat consecutively displays they really know their stuff when it comes to spectacle (Not to mention how they wear the sheer dissonance of their characters going from tense crime drama cutscenes to spectacular arcade combat to utterly ridiculous side activities as if an honourary badge on their sleeve!). With them already set to tackle Fist of the North Star (Hokuto ga Gotoku/Like a North Star), I'd reckon them giving Sonic a go wouldn't be an interesting experiment. Only question would be if they went for the arcade fighting combat that is their signature or good ol' speedrunnin' platformin' that is Sonic's signature (They certainly did better than you'd think with Binary Domain, being a third-person shooter), and if the former, the only real challenge would be being able to keep the sheer intensity tame enough for a E10+ or Pegi 7+ rating (In their games, people at the other end of your punches & kicks get spectacularly DESTROYED, with cutscenes more likely to kill someone than Kazuma Kiryu flooring a street thug with a motorcycle). Hey, a man can dream.

You got Knuckles Chaotix pretty much spot on. Great gimmicks with the characters and controls ruined by absolutely bland and interchangeable level design. They couldn't even get water into the water level. I liked 3D Blast though remembered thinking it would be a lot more fun without the Flicky gimmick. And it's nice to see another Sonic R fan. :D

Really wish they would go back and fully optimize Sonic The Fighters so that it could compete with today's fighters and cement itself within the FGC. I think it still has potential it's been backed by the VF engine. Damn.

Bro, what happened to the audio?

Its a shame that Tails, Knuckles, and Shadow couldn't spin off into their own subseries like the Mario characters

Sjono Eh, I think we could've seen stuff like that had Sega remained a hardware manufacturer, but it's a tougher sell when you're making games for other platforms.

The Rabbids got their own separate series so its possible but not advised

The problem is that often SEGA didn't really capitalise on their IPs. Around the Saturn era they weren't even really investing much into new Sonic games, let alone ones for supporting characters.

@@ToonReel001 Sega was always busy making new IPs, I think that's a good thing.
