Indore, an education hub and the commercial capital of the state of Madhya Pradesh, is situated
in the Malwa Plateau. It generates about 1029 tonne of waste daily (392.4 g per person per day). The city, which was already famous for its food and its bangles, has now also earned the 5-star garbage-free city. Indore has also been ranked the cleanest city of India in Swacch Survekshan Surveys since 2017. The city is not only Open Defecation Free but has also earned the first Water Plus Certification in the country.
How did Indore turn so clean. Since 2015, the city has brought about systematic changes in the way it disposes garbage. Segregation of waste followed by door to door collection is practiced throughout the city. There are zero waste wards in the city, where its residents practice, home composting and treat most of the wet waste in-situ. Most to dry waste is sent to a material recovery facility where it is segregated and sent for recycling. The wet waste which is not treated on site goes to a central composting facility. Part of the wet waste is also turned into BIO-CNG which is used to run public transport.

I agree! And one thing that I really like about this is the fact that the people of Indore are really proud of it! I have many friends from the place and the second you mentioned anything about cleanliness. They pipe up and speak about how they keep everything clean where they're from, they also usually keep their corners of the neighborhoods they are in relatively clean out of habit. Lol (although, of course you end up having people who kind of get negatively influenced and end up littering like they would have otherwise, which is sad to see)

A great example to emulate. This video is surely an eye opener to all people who discount the role of the govt authorities in waste management and put all the onus on the end users. Sure, people must segregate garbage and give for collection. But after that further refining the segregation, waste processing, incineration, recycling etc is the role of the govt and various other entities.

I really don't understand wider India's relationship with its waste & garbage. Especially given the 'Swachh Bharat' campaign which the our PM was supposedly such a big champion of. One the one hand the country is visbly dirty pretty much everywhere given the large population and inherent habits of littering amongst the majority. But it is too easy to dismiss the public's littering habit as the root cause of our country's filthiness and do nothing about it as politicians usually do. The bigger truth however is no country's population is full free of such habits. In fact public apathy towards littering is one of the big problems USA itself faced back in the 60s. The real problem however is not littering I think. It is structural lack of standardized processes of waste collection and waste management. If there is no government initiative to collect waste or dispose it, what can the wider public do? They have to dispose their waste someplace. Without a centralized system in place no one has the time to do "personal ethical waste management" The Modi govt. even with it's "Swachh Bharat" drama seems to have done absolutely nothing in terms of establishing this waste management process. Making videos & taking photos about cleaning the street using a long broom for a couple of days is good for publicity and image but does nothing about India's filth problem. On the other hand, there is a constant worry about unemployment among a big section of the India public especially those transitioning from rural to urban India. Investing in a centralised 21st century pan-India waste management system [one that truly respects its workers by providing dignified safety gear, salaries and benefits, instead of treating them as "low varna/jaati people who are meant to do this work" as they are now treated (hence justifying their work hazards, low salaries)], though expensive in the short-term, not only creates cleanliness in the country but also creates jobs, make citizens comfortable living in their country and even indirectly may reduce brain drain, apart from all the ecological benefits. Maybe I'm just a dreamer, but hey....I'm not the only one.

This initiative is part of the Swachh Bharat Mission itself. Maybe you are half informed but Swacch bharat sarvekshan actually is part of the SBM itself. Also, you must listen to the last part of the video wherein the commissioner speaks about the reasons why Indore could maintain its high ranking in cleanliness. If there are people willing to cooperate , no goal is too less. It is a collective effort and not a political exercise. SBM is a very welcome initiative which atleast made the conversation about waste management a wider discussion.

Indore's biodegradable #Wet waste #quality is better than Europe's. For Bio methanation plant you need top quality waste in which there is barely any mixing of Non biodegradable waste. (As per company which built this plant said, that's why they were interested in more plants in other cities but wanted assured quality waste for it, which others (Local Bodies) failed to provide).

Quite commendable indeed. Also looks like Indore actually has footpaths with sett/cobblestones, let alone them being clean, which is impressive for India. BTW: 1:41 It should be "a few years _ago",_ not "back" (i.e., पहले not पीछे) 10:11 Not "commendable impacts", but commendable _effects;_ "impact" means a crash/collision, and I'm not sure when those would be commendable. I don't know why this jargon word is becoming popular these days.
