Over 12.3 billion disposable sanitary pads are generated every year in India. That’s an average of 35 million pads per day.
And forget about processing this waste, almost 50% is not even getting collected.
According to data on menstrual waste management from the MDWS, 28 per cent of such pads are thrown in the open and 15 per cent are burnt openly. *Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation
But a small City in Satara District of Maharashtra has become a role model of Sanitary waste management for the entire country. In Karad, 100 per cent of sanitary waste and biomedical waste is segregated, collected and processed separately.
This is easier said than done. Especially in a country where the topic of sanitary waste carries social stigma.
Situated on the confluence of Krishna and Koyna River, Karad always had a rich legacy when it comes to waste management practices. Towards the late 90s, the rise in the percentage of plastic and unsegregated collection of waste turned the city’s processing site into a landfill. Karad was also slowly turning into a medical hub which in turn generated biomedical waste. The unsegregated household waste got mixed with biomedical waste creating all sorts of problems for the municipality.
But Karad wasn’t willing to drag its proud legacy to its drains. And so, the authorities along with the people of Karad decided to get their city back on track.
Despite being a small city, the Karad Municipal Council along with the hospital association formed a unique biomedical waste processing facility with a capacity of 30kg per hour.
Sanitary waste segregation was always a challenge in India due to the taboo associated with it. Karad was no different. A good percentage of the Sanitary waste ended up clogging the city’s drains and public places.
The Municipal Council also encouraged schools to set up Sanitary pad dispensary machines and Sanitary waste disposal systems. After a two-month-long exercise,100 per cent of households in Karad started giving sanitary waste separately for collection. The administration then made an agreement with the biomedical waste treatment facility at Kharad colony, to process the Sanitary waste without any additional cost to the KMC.
Today, Karad has ended up being a flag bearer of Sanitary and biowaste management in India.
The city also has reclaimed the landfill plot by cleaning around 59,000 tonnes of legacy waste using methods like biomining. Authorities of Karad are planning to make their waste management systems better with modern technologies.
Effective collaboration between agencies and shared responsibilities has indeed been the USP for Karad’s success with a cycle of people and KMC working in synergy has resulted in creating a city they can proudly call clean.

A couple of days back, I with my group we went to Boregaon, Satara for trekking (40km away). While descending, we collected full size bag of plastic waste from the mountain path which some idiots had thrown in places where Municipal Bodies couldn't reach, and which affects environment. Our social group is also working on developing 25km, one way track of trekking in Karad by marking the guiding routes through mountains and forests and maintaining the route, doing plantation and providing water for birds The point is, People in KRD are aware and are expanding their efforts beyond our boundaries.

Hey! I am from Karad, and I must say, I feel so bad visiting Delhi or Mumbai looking at all the garbage on streets... Karad is very very clean, the whole city is sweeped twice everyday by cleaning staff... Also, I'd thank you for acknowledging our city, it's literally the first time I've seen a video about Karad on KZbin

Women's should switch to menstrual cup to avoid generating waste.

That would be ideal given the situation but a lot of stigma is associated with menstrual cups. Also given the unsanitary conditions of our public restrooms that’s asking for a UTI.

Feel really very proud to be a citizen of karad, but this is incomplete information. Biogasification and windrow composting also done at solid waste management plant of karad and it plays major role cause methane gas is generated from biogas, it is stored and reuses in kitchen and generating electricity and manure generated from windrow composting, is to be sold in market .

Neighbour city Malkapur is exactly opposite to Karad. 🥺😭😭😭. 1) To buy new water meter, 20000₹ required. 2)Underground drainage is not properly built, after every 6 months chambers get blocked. Municipality staff do not inspect them after certain time regularly. Every time citizen have to call local municipality Member(Nagarsevak ), then he will call municipality staff. 😏😏😏😏3)Also underground drainage scheme is in process since last 5 years. When will it complete, no one knows? ☹️ Drainage water directly goes to river.

Actually, Malkapur is more developed & Cleanest city than near's Karad. 1) First solid waste management is done in Malkapur, than in Karad 2) Also, Malkapur is Solar city. Their municipality provide them Solar (to every home)

Of course it's easier to educate people about waste management and personal hygiene when you have a population of 100,000, but, how do you do that with cities with over 1 million inhabitants in India?
@TheStudyShackbySanketManiyar

Every city can do that, in Karad, people were not "educated"... In Karad, the Municipal Council spread a message into the people that if we win Swacch Survekshan, we'll get a 20 crore rupees prize, so we'll have good roads in the city. After we won it, the first thing we did id, we made 5 fountains in the 5 important Chowks of the city- a signal to the people that we have money... most roads in our city are in very good condition, again bcoz our Municipal Council has a lot of money & we have BJP ruling here...
