A short film of our climb of the Wintun-Hotlum route up the east face of Mt. Shasta in July of 2013. The early snow melt after a heavy early winter snowfall made for interesting conditions during the climb. We had beautiful sunshine and a bit of wind near the summit. Because of some deep early season snow that was just semi-consolidated in the summer sun, the down climb down the east face ended up being a bit on the dangerous side as self-arresting was not easy in those conditions. Join us on the adventure of climbing this stunning peak.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart, for making this film. I also became a part of Mt. Shasta in 2004 with a group of fellow Marines and a couple of Kyrgyztan officers. This movie has brought me great tears of great memories. If anyone is searching for heaven, its at the summit of any good mountain.

Thanks for your comments. I too had the privilege of serving our country in 1991 in Iraq. I have found the mountains to be the place I want to retreat to in order to regain perspective on how small we are in the larger scheme of history and to be thankful for a life that allows me to enjoy this creation.

The one advantage of the Avalanche Gulch route in mid June is that you can slide down on your arse from Red Banks for 2000' in a groove made by other climbers. Later in the month it is too rocky. The most dangerous time to climb the Avalanche gulch route is during the August to September months where there are often rock slides in late morning from the sun melting the rocks imbedded in the ice.

I attempted the climb with my scout troop in 2002. I made it to the big rock before the giant rock at the top of ridge. then came the puke.... only 4 of the 15 members made it to in sight of the summit. this is a real mountain and I've always wanted to come back.... thanks for this video!

Did a similar Shasta route in July a few years ago, although the snow was a bit firmer so we just went straight up from the base camp rather than the loop around the west side (made for a quicker hike/climb - day and a half total). Fun glissade back down! Nice to see familiar scenery. We also only ran into a few folks, and they'd hiked up the bare dirt trail on the west side, no other snow climbers. Thanks for the artistic composition and bringing back memories!

Climbed Shasta in June, 2015. Camped at bunny flats and started for the summit at midnight. Summited at 11:00. I just got of the plane from sea level, so dealing with the altitude was difficult.

great job! But why didn't you take time to see and film the incredible ice falls? I have tried to make it to the Hotlum ice falls 2 times, but they were closed up by 2017 heavy snow. The stills I have seen of the ice falls totally enchant me!

Thank you so much for making this film. So so informative. Just curious, can you recommend d any resources to check the weather on the mountain this week? I know there’ might be a storm coming in (I’m in Ashland) but I don’t know how that affects the Shasta area and the summit. Thanks in advance
@doctortelemark
@doctortelemark 2 жыл бұрын
I would use the NOAA weather site to look at the targeted forecast for the mountain. It is quite accurate much of the time. This time of year is not a great season to climb it as the storms are fairly frequent and the routes are pretty exposed to wind.

No ropes on this one .maybe on the steep snow field.? Fine climb glorious country.well done.
@doctortelemark
@doctortelemark 2 жыл бұрын
Yep, having ropes on the steeper pitch would have been a good idea. The huge drifting of snow from the previous winter loaded the east side in such a way in created a steeper wall then what the topo looked like. A bit nerve wracking in a few spots on the way up. On the way down, it really softened up and felt a bit safer.

I believe Mt. Lassen is considered to be in the Cascade range and therefore "it" anchors the southern extent of the Cascade range.
@doctortelemark
@doctortelemark 10 жыл бұрын
yep, a little artist license seeing as Shasta is so huge. Lassen could be the tie down for the anchor.

I made in Lightwave with a topo overlay, then the route drawing with After Effects - a bit complicated. You may be able to a similar fly over now with Google Earth now though.

Great film !! However, I hope you do not mind me pointing out a small correction... the southern most peak/volcano/anchor of the range is actually Lassen Peak and not Shasta.
@doctortelemark
@doctortelemark 8 жыл бұрын
Yep, a little artistic license since Shasta is so much bigger, Lassen is a bit more of a side show.

We did the climb in early July. Normally, the snow level is about 2000 feet lower, about 8000 ft (about 2500m) but the 2013 snow fall was much less than normal. If you in June, plan on a long descent on skis if you have them.

Yes, we glissaded where we could arrest our slide - most of the last 2000 feet.. The snow was so soft and deep on the midsection of the climb, if you planted your ice ax it just kept going down deeper and wouldn't slow you down much.

Pike's Peak is almost the same altitude, but you can drive to the top in a car. It's much easier. California should provide a highway to the top of Mt. Shasta.
