Mt. Shasta is a lot of things to a lot of people. For skiers, it's seven-thousand vertical feet of perfect corn skiing on a late spring day. For Cody and Bjarne, it represents the end of Year 1 of The FIFTY. Joined up by a bevy of Tahoe friends, the crew sets off on a perfect June morning for the lengthy climb and lengthy ski. Filled with goofing off, good friends, Hawaiian shirts and some damn fun skiing make for a fitting end to a hell of a season in North America. This episode features Scott Gaffney, Michelle Parker, Kyle O'neal, Jeff Dostie, Brennan Lagasse, Megan Michelson and Ming Poon.
This is Episode 21 for The FIFTY, and line 20 completed by Cody Townsend. The FIFTY is a project following Cody Townsend as he attempts to climb and ski all fifty of the lines and mountains chronicled in the book, "The 50 Classic Ski Descents of North America." The series documents Townsend's journey's, travels, challenges and each line and mountain listed in the book. It's a journey through the most majestic mountains and ski lines in North America along with a unique insight into how skiers make decisions in the backcountry, how they plan, navigate and safely move through the mountains and the people that dedicate their lives to the mountains.
Mt. Shasta is also known as Úytaahkoo by the native Karuk people, Ako-Yet by the native Ajumawi, Bohem Puyuik by the Wintu people or also known as Waka-nunee-Tuki-wuki by the surrounding mix of native Shastan tribes.

One of the best things about The Fifty is you get to see pro-level skiers making the same loose rubber-leg turns that the rest of us make after a tiring summit push.

Heck yeah Cody!! That's us y'all buzzed at the summit at 8 minutes! It was darn fun to watch you and the crew party-shralp off the summit block! I'm happy to share the short videos I snagged of your Screaming Spread-Eagle if you'd like. Way to keep at this monster of a project, and hopefully we'll cross paths again this season!

My first climb with ice axe and crampons in 1987 when I was 37. Tried it three more times and I got older and didn't get to the summit. But started rock climbing when I was 48 and fell in love with that now 70 still climb and ski. Climbed Cathedral peak in Yosemite five times as a belayer.

So awesome guys. What a journey, it has been a honour to come along for the ride. These videos have inspired many many young mountaineers (including my 8yr old and 10yr old ones) to both push themselves but also respect the mountain, to only take what the mountain gives, and go until it doesn’t make sense anymore. All the best for the adventures to come!

Thanks Cody and crew for a great first year. Concerning Shasta...you decsribed your feelings for the mountain very well. I share your sentiments as it was back in 1968 on spring break from my senior year in high school that my climbing and mountaineering partner, Joe Hajny, and I summited on bright spring day for our first 14er. I have not been back there since so your tour with the crew reminded so much me of that day and the joy of shared camaraderie.

Cody Townsend, dude I just found you last weekend, and now I’ve watched all of the episodes and exited for more to come. There’s few you tubers who are as entertaining as a personality and what you do is mad incredible. This is like adventure archives for me. Love to sit and digest East episode. I’ve been looking in from a window in the mountaineering lifestyle for awhile, as a hiker. But maybe I need to make the next jump and try to learn some skills. Much appreciated my guy. I really love this series, as it makes an old man like me re-live my youthful mountain adventures vicariously through you and your friends. Of course in reality, my adventures were not quite as extreme, didn't always have a Cody putting the 'party' in climbing party, and I would have been last up the mountain. But I can watch and pretend I am there. Thank you! I am going to watch the whole series if you finish the whole series! Quite the undertaking and I really really respect your fortitude in doing this.
