Absolutely great video with some brilliant technical information . I’m 61 and have been fishing since I was 8 and every day is a learning day in fishing . Just a quick aside . I fish the Severn a lot . Have a static on the river and I do a lot of bream and barbel fishing .As far as the close season goes, my theory is that they want anglers off the river for a good portion of the year because we are a group of people who spot pollution and report. I worked the water industry for over 40 years now retired and pollution is shocking in rivers . As a qualified chartered chemist/ scientist, I have stories that would make your hair curl .

Im not so bothered about closed season, but Cormorant & Otter predation is having a huge effect. All the fish are shoaling up in one area of the rivers where they feel safer, but everyone is scared of tackling the situation because they scared of RSPB 🎣✨️

Great technical information there, I will admit I have never used a leader as I just don't understand how to do it, a video on the knots, differing setups etc would be great. Mick did kind of slipped when he was on about testing and venues with mention of testing a pole, this is something I would be very eager to see as everything else nufish has produced has been quality so can't imagine them releasing a naff pole and they don't try and charge the earth for their gear either. Once again a very enjoyable video guys, it's one of the highlights of the week when a new mixing bowl drops, it's soon become a regular I look forward too so thank you. I hope this continues throughout the year and not just a winter thing and can only envision it going from strength to strength, maybe the odd guest here and there would be good too for a varied opinion. Take care both and all at Nufish, tight lines.

Yet another great watch guys. Pub cast, love it lol. The estate lakebi fish allways opened in march, it's also a camp site but they use to stock a few hundred trout so they could open. Allways fun for us young lads sat there in freezing March, great to hook a few mental trout. On the subject of line, when I fished the trent, most used an Abu 501 which took 100 yards of 2.6lb line. Like mick said, good stretch and fantastic control. Bet most anglers use line above 2.6lb now.

Another great session lads! For what it’s worth , my opinion on the Closed season is like you, it’s a nonsense ! However, where we differ if my thinking on what to do, I believe that the Angling Trust has achieved nothing, to achieve change we must change our tack, organise a large match in Bewdley, Evesham, Nottingham, London etc , mass fish ins! Very public law breaking, force a dialogue, maybe ask everyone to hold off the licence buying for a month, see how the EA feel about that. Simply talking to Martin Salter, and a couple of ministers has achieved nothing, and probably never will. There is so much going on in Parliament how will a debate on the closed season ever get raised? It won’t We must protest, I’ve done anti helmet rallies, filmed by the police as we rode our bikes helmetless, rock against racism, anti war March Just my opinion

Your comments on the rules of various fisheries putting people off is very true. I fish a fishery most weekends, so my tackle is set up to suit those rules, I've fancied fishing at some other fisheries recently but the various rules on rigs, tackle and Bait really puts me off, not because I think they are unnecessary, but because it's so varied and alot to remember, I wouldn't want to break rules accidently.

I believe that river match organisers need a break as well. The River Hare has matches every Saturday often Sundays and mid week as well. Those weeks are vital for swim prep etc. I think anglers who fish those matches are happy with the close season. I do believe though that it was originally brought in so fly anglers got 12 weeks of Bankside free from other anglers.

I have been saying for years that clubs and water owners should be allowed to control THEIR river stretches. The current 1876 law is ridiculous and not fit for purpose. It was lifted in 1995 on stillwaters and in 2000 on canals. Has anything gone wrong in those 30 and 25 years? No! Great show guys, keep up the good work!

Some very interesting points about the closed season raised there. While I agree with much, of what you guys said. I think there are a couple of other points that need to be taken into account. Like you have said, it's not been changed for years, we all recognize the seasons have drifted through the calendar months, whereby Spring seems to be later now, than it did twenty years ago. With regard to closing the river banks, I know the theory behind the regeneration of the bankside, but it's also a time, when a great many of our bird species, are breeding and raising young. Lets be honest, there are very few anglers that enjoy seeing and observing wildlife. They are all under great pressure to thrive, and I would hate to be part of the problem. Like you have said, there is a solution, but with Captain Calamity at the helm, I'm not going to be holding my breath.

Fireside chat that is a positive force for anglers and angling. The controversial topic of the closed season on rivers is not as straightforward as some might think. Unpredictable weather patterns are an obvious factor, and have been more prevalent over the last 25 -30 years, which also happens to be close to the rise in commercial fisheries and 'all year fishing' being allowed on canals and many stillwaters. On many rivers, particularly The River Severn, there are many clubs and associations controlling fishing rights on opposing banks. To allow clubs to control the closed season would cause conflict, where anglers could be permitted on one bank, but not the other. Tackle shops have historically had to contend with three months of low sales and no bait sales. The last 25 + years has given tackle shops year round revenue, through commercial venues, but canals don't really see high activity levels from March to September, that's due people's angling habits and preferences. One point, you mentioned DH only fishing rivers. He used to fish The Birmingham Parks (championships / festival). Birmingham City Council only allow year round fishing at four of the parks. The remaining 15 or so, park pools still operate the conventional closed season.

Never used a leader myself, just use heavier line if the weight of the feeder needs it. Most places I used to fish a 50m cast would be on the opposite bank anyway. The close season, I think the EA needs to reassess spawning periods in the current climate conditions and decide if dates need changing at the least. I don't, or at least haven't, been much of a river angler, but I have enjoyed trotting a stick from time to time on the Hull at Tickton, usually unsuccessfully.

The fishery rules debate has come up a few times on the guru podcasts and every time I think that a few public faces that work in the fishing trade need to form a committee with the owners of the big commercial fisheries around the country and get together to discuss / debate / argue but ultimately come up with a set of standard commercial fishery rules. The rules can be published on a website and any fisheries that decide to go with those rules can just put a standard sign up saying the rules comply with UK standard commercial fishery rules with the website / QR code on. I know that they'd need to be listed out separately or print leaflets with them on / put them in the angling times etc for those that don't have access to internet or for venues with poor coverage but at least that standard would become known across the various venues and even those fisheries that aren't involved in the committee can adopt the rules to simplify their rules too. Once established if the rules need to change then the committee could meet up once a year / every two years or remotely just to vote / agree on changing the rules.

Unpoliced rules, like fishery only pellets/bait quantities especially in matches/festivals, are rarely policed despite it being known this is the case with some. Don't want to upset the apple cart I would suggest. Venue rules that have different rules to pleasure rules can be confusing, especially to newcomers to the matches, even more so when often a lot of match rules are not written (rules can be "can and cannot do"...) and are taken for granted and deemed 'everyone knows'.

The river closed season & the ban on Wasp Grub, are both anachronistic silly laws. I can sit facing west on the island above the weir on the River Don at Sprotboro & fish legally in May. Yet turn 180 degrees on my box and face east & i am braking the close season laws, both without leaving my box! As for the Wasp Grub ban...in the late 70's, i used to work as a Saturday Maggot boy in Jack Grice's Fishing Tackle shop in Rotherham. We used to sell carrier bags full of Wasp Grub to the match lads. They were brought into the shop by local pest controllers during the Summer months & were available to anyone with zero hassle of collecting them. Sometimes i bought a bag full, but more often than not, i collected my own nests, it was far more fun!

My great grandfather told my farther that the close season was introduced in 1878 by land owners. Due to at the time, working class poor would pinch vegetables and young lambs to feed the family on. In them days thousands would descend from city's to fish rivers... It was farmers loss!!!!!!

I wonder why traditionally we use long hook lengths for feeder fishing. 50 cm for international rules and a lot of us just used an arms length to the middle of your chest. The method proves that 4 inches, sometimes 3, catches lots of fish. So why do most of us still use 18” to 30” occasionally longer or shorter but not so often, on the normal feeder?
@FISHINGMINTY
@FISHINGMINTY Күн бұрын
Personally I think it depends on where the fish are - If the fish are on the bottom and come across your hookbait there then it doesn't matter how short the hooklength is (as long as they can pick it up without feeling the weight of the feeder and as long as it's not so short that it doesn't tangle up with the feeder itself as it hits the surface or sinks to the bottom). Quite often though I think fish up in the water follow the feeder / hookbait down in the water and will take the hookbait on the drop - This is more likely to happen with a longer hooklength as the longer the hooklength the slower the hookbait will fall because it's not so close to the feeder that it gets dragged down by it. A bit like a waggler rig or pole rig - the line below the lowest weight will descend based on the weight of the hookbait so if you have an olivette or big weight above the hooklength it will get to the bottom quicker. This is based on my own theories of physics though so could be wide of the mark! :)

The close season is not jusat to help the fish. It's also a time for the bankside to recover.........and a period when a fishery owner can get stuff done, like netting or bankside maintenance. I'd even suggest that ALL coarse fishing should halt for 12 weeks - but that would mean businesses would suffer.

Close Season its out dated for Rivers if pond and canals were included there would be uproar. As Joe said it should be left up to clubs and land owners to control the close season, My club has a good length of private river where we could close off sections that are fished more due to easy access at different times for spawning and leave other areas that are not fished due to very long walks open. On our river we have a site SSSI due to a certain flower we don't cut the pegs right back and the grass flood bank is left alone till after the flowering season to minimise any disturbance. Dog walkers can use River banks all the time and some dogs can upset the bird life and bank dwelling creatures during their breeding season more than most fishermen. We also due Bank clearance after the Floods have gone in Spring to help the bank side vegetation and animals and get rid of rubbish caused by the floods. Time to abolish this out dated law

The close season was brought in as a conservation measure,. Back then , we British ate coarse fish and the closed season was introduced to prevent the hungry, starving people at the time from taking fish to eat that were full of eggs.. The law should be repealed and fish management left to the angling clubs or whoever hold the fishhing rights as occurs on other waters

Where I can I use a braid shocker to both braid or mono. Smoother and all the force goes into the cast as there is no stretch. Why use 0.10 braid reel line to a mono shocker that can have a lower breaking strain? Using mono shocker to braid means the different materials leave the spool at slightly different speeds and can cause a frap up. Look how many crack offs get posted for a laugh at Southfield.

The set dates are now outdated due to global warming. The seasons have changed and so should the dates. While anglers are forced to be away from the rivers predators go unchecked, including poachers & less reporting/response to unscrupulous water companies discharging & polluting.

Do we remain a hobby ? Or should we become a professional sport ? We already have it at an international level ? At domestic fishing we definitely aren't professional. Would this improve the sport in people's eyes ? And possibly investment from outside the sport , tv ect . China seem to have made this work in a huge way . A sport with no set rules cannot be considered a professional sport; the very definition of a sport typically requires a set of established rules to ensure fair competition and a clear way to determine a winner, which is essential to be a professional . Professional sports are regulated by governing bodies that set and enforce the rules, ensuring consistency across competitions. As far a most matches go , it's started by the organiser who then doesn't return to the end of the match , or is even fishing themselves . Can you imagine if the ref blew his whistle at the start of a footy match and said " ill see you in 45 mins " 😂

The close season is doing much more damage than anglers will ever do ..cormorants do not like people FACT no people equals happy cormorants so for 3 months happy days fish sholed up no people around welcome to the dinner party not only that any pollution that would be spotted by anglers will go undetected so get eaten or die because of a stupid rule thats so out of date its a joke Stop it now.

The climate has changed for a while know the trent is flooded out most of the winter . Chub were seen spawning at stoke bardolph think it was late june early july i know this for a fact my mate is one of the baliffs and sent me the video . The closed season has become a big contradiction Better for the trade if the rivers stay open . Just leave it to each individual club to decide if and when they want to close a water .
