I was a cast member (at EPCOT, no less) in ‘87 and must have rode Horizons a hundred times. It was a stunningly immersive and beautifully executed experience. It really did put everything else in FutureWorld to shame. Yet I find it incredibly ironic that the one thing that would have saved Horizons from the wrecking ball, specifically “a vision for Horizons in the future”, was the very thing Disney completely and utterly lacked. ....”you never truly know what you’ve lost until it’s gone”.

I have ridden thousands of amusement ride and attractions, my family was into it and I was exposed to a lot of it at a young age. Of all the rides I have ridden, Horizons will always be above and beyond the rest. When you got off of Horizons you felt as if the future was bright, your future. No other ride expanded your mind with thought and visuals, inspiring many to follow their dreams in an exciting career path that can shape the world of tomorrow. There isn’t another ride in the world that can pull that off.

As much as I wish for the same thing (I experienced EPCOT Center during it's heyday...it's pretty much unrecognizable to me now), I know it's just a dream that will likely never happen. You have to remember the original EPCOT Center attractions were all focused on education basically...all focusing on a different area of human achievement, and also designed very 1980s (not an insult I love the 80s). With the current generation of young people....I just don't see how it could appeal to them. Of course, I'd love to be wrong but that's my initial feeling. Things were different back then...EPCOT Center had a huge impact on me as a child and I strongly believe it influenced my future decisions and way of thinking. Those were the days of using an encyclopedia to look up information. So...today's young people think completely differently . Combined with competition from other "thrill based" parks like Universal Studios, etc....Disney has been forced to dumb down their attractions, unfortunately. But would I love to see them bring this back in some sort of new way, absolutely. But I'm not holding my breath.

I never got a chance to experience Horizons as a kid. But based on the footage, it looks absolutely incredible. This ride’s closing, and other changes to Epcot over the years, really makes me wonder how Walt would feel about current-day Future World. I know it is currently in sort of a transition phase, but to me it has departed from its original vision, and the addition of new attractions like a Guardians of the Galaxy coaster don’t really align with the original intent of Epcot. Ultimately if it drives up attendance it will be a success for Disney, but it does feel like the educational, visionary, forward-thinking mission of Epcot is getting lost in the shuffle.

It was sad though considering it use to have very long lines then at the end the cast members would just let you stay on for another ride if you wanted because literally nobody was in line.

Horizons was the greatest dark ride of all time. 1, it took risks and tried to predict a PLAUSIBLE future. Something not even today's movies do. 2, it was huge in scale, covering many different possible outcome and environments. 3, it was probably the ONLY ride at the time that let you choose how it would end. 4, it was the last ride to encompass the visions of Disney and Epcot. When it died, so did the last of Walt Disney's dreams of the future. 5, it used special effects to enhance, not distract. It utilized the pepper's ghost 3D effect on a huge scale for the birthday finale, simulated underwater effects and included scents like oranges in the Mesa Verde farming section. More human audio-animatronics, more props, more scene changes and then the carousel of progress despite being 5 mniutes shorter, all done on a hugely slashed budget. Greatest dark ride of all time. Period!

I rode this ride maybe twice in my life and always loved it. Back then, during the late 80's and early 90's it really encompassed a fantastic vision of the future. However, looking back at it now, it was 80's style futurism and was quickly becoming outdated. But like you, I do hope that Imagineers come up with something similar but even better with all the new ride technology there is today.

Because of this video, and because of the name they chose. "Century 3" I found the tricentennial, and a bunch of letters from people in 1976 to the people of 2076. 90% of them wish that fighting and war will stop, and we will get along. Also, the mere concept of there being "Centuries" in America seems to have been long lost, which is just.. depressing. What happened to this optimistic view of the future? I still have it, and I know I'm not alone. Enough doom and gloom, let's get back to stuff like this! Beautiful video on one of Disney's coolest attractions by far IMO. The only problem with the Horizons attraction was it depicted a future that never came! Today, civilians still can't go to space, let alone live there! We still don't have towns in the ocean, we're no closer to having robot slaves, etc. In short, the utopian future we were promised in the 20th century didn't happen! By the time it closed, Horizons represented the dreams of the past, not the promise of the future!

As cool as this ride seems, I fully understand why they tore it down: just like Tomorrowland, it was hopelessly outdated just a decade into its existence. I would have loved for them to have kept it around for another decade untouched a la Body Works though, so that they could have eventually took it apart and added certain elements from it to the Tomorrowland update, which has since become retro-future themed. Having the People Mover have the choose your own adventure motif would have been amazing.

Never got to experience horizons since the first time I went to Disney World was in 2001. Kinda bummed they didn’t try to create a better up to date version of the original ride. One way to do it would be to use the mission space ride and change the movie to the different locations featured in the original ride (desert, ocean, and space). Epcot is changing though. The future world idea is slowly being chipped away. It might be for the better considering the actual future we live in is nothing like the one they imagined (except maybe space ship earth). Honestly I think Disney needs to figure out a new theme for Epcot that can attract the next generation to the park. If not then Epcot will just turn into the park you only go to for the seasonal festivals. Personally I wouldn’t mind making it into a giant interactive science museum. You could have space science exhibits at mission space or marine biology exhibits at the seas pavilion and so on. Hands on stuff that makes learning fun. Unfortunately with the guardians of the galaxy ride it seems Disney is finally trying to fill in that thrill ride hole they’ve avoided for so long. If they continue with that direction then Epcot will truly be dead. Thanks again for these videos. This has been an enjoyable series.

I think if they were just to keep with Epcot's original vision, and still keep some thrilling rides in there that go along with that (like Test Track (the first version) which was still educational on how cars are tested) it would continue on just fine.
