Join us on Expedition Alton Towers or well Expedition Theme Park as we look at the closed history of Rameses Revenge at Chessington World of Adventures and Ripsaw at Alton Towers in England. These Huss Top spin rides became iconic flat rides in the british Theme Parks until they were closed as well as a brief history of Texas Twister at Gueaga Lake. RIPsaw.

Ripsaw will always hold a special place in my heart, I've been going to AT since I was really young and I'll never forget my aunt going on Ripsaw in the late 90s/early 00s - she was dead cocky and thought she wouldn't get wet if she wore her hood but she was right infront of a fountain and it sprayed her in the face and utilised the hood to funnel the water in her jacket lmao. Always makes me sad seeing that little broken window display where it used to be

Very fond memories operating Ripsaw for many years! Did you know that Huss never sanctioned the use of water fountains, which by the way we're manually controlled by the operator with a separate lever on the desk. The Huss model was never suitable for water operation and water ingress - caused by over enthusiastic operators leaving the fountains high as the gondola swings through - was often the cause of downtime. Still it was a lot of fun drenching everyone on board and waiting to ride.
@EscapeFromCustody
@EscapeFromCustody 26 күн бұрын
I'm glad they did the water anyway, it's what made the rides really special and when you had playful operators who'd mix up the sequences and tease you with the water it helped the ride become a favourite in the park

Yup another one from the heyday of Wardley theming. The man was a legend in his field. AT has lost its way a bit since his retirement. For me, theming is as important as ride experience and what separates a permanent park from local travelling fairs.

It groaned, creaked and by god the motor whine was horrendous, it truly was on its last legs. There’s so much to thank John Wardley for bringing the concept of theme parks to the UK. He came up with the idea of adding fountains and everyone copied him after. I think what makes the Top Spin so popular is that it interacts so well with those watching.

Like I actually tear up. I find the backstory of the rides so interesting I love how much research and detail you put in about them. It is weird because I remember waiting in the queue for ripsaw over the years like 20 times and watching people get fountains to the face never got old but you never think that it will be your last time seeing it. There's just something so special about theme parks and rides and rollercoasters.

What i loved about Ripsaw, was the crowds it attracted, that most if not, no other flat rides attracted within Alton Towers. People would simply stop and watch this massive structure, creak, rattle and hiss wetting the punters. On top of the ride operators witty PA announcements, this ride was golden entertainment for everyone including non riders. I don't think there will be ever a true replacement for Ripsaw.

I remember on end of year school trips i avoided this ride at Chessington until one year i took the plunge and survived the experienced; the ride was absolutely brilliant and it did really make you feel brave and abit tougher than those that couldnt stomach it. Seeing Rameses and the yellow monorail, Dragon Falls really bring back memories. Chessington back in the late 90s was deemed the no.1 theme park for years until it seemed that Thorpe Park suddenly started to get all the attention and better rides. I mean who would have thought a gentle indoor water story ride like Professor Burbs Bubbleworks would be so popular and create such long queues?! Its madness but we all went on that for the water fountain section just to get absolutely drenched.

I’m kind of worried it’ll be gone soon since they closed volcano and the tumbler ride and the bob sled coaster are all that’s in that area of the park running now. Seems like prime “knock it down and build something new” territory. On the other hand, Cedar Fair generally builds very exciting new things sooooooo, let’s see what the future brings.

These always impressed me as a kid, when I could only enjoy the thrills of a flume or of family mine train. One day, we accidentally met other parents from my school with their kids at the park (my school had a teacher conference that day). So the parents (I think each parent was handling at least 4 kids) decided to stick together so they could have adult company while the kids had fun. All the kids were super excited about going to this ride...except me. Obviously, peer pressure made me do it. I loved it and then I did all the bigger roller coasters and rides of the park and I was SO proud of myself :D I haven't been scared of rides ever since, so this has a special little place in my heart.

Yeah, it wasn't a pleasant ride. In fact I almost didn't ride Ripsaw because I'd been on Terror Rack for the first time earlier in the year it had opened. So glad I went against my better judgement, Ripsaw was 10,000 times the ride Terror Rack was! You could tell that Pleasure Island was a budget park, they had 2 Huss imitations (the Fabbri Top Spin and the BreakDance they had wasn't made by Huss either), and their 2 big ticket rides for a long time were a looping Pinfari Zyklon and a Vekoma Boomerang.

Love this ride, we visited Alton towers in 1997 and managed to get in the last ride of the day where they went through all the ride sequences as they were filming for a documentary, mental!

That's always going to be the issue with water rides in uk parks unfortunately. When you've coughed up the best part of £50 to get in, spending the day sopping wet isn't much fun. It's not like FL or CA where it's so warm you dry out in minutes (and the heat tends to mean you can get away with wearing less to begin with).

Love hearing Geauga Lake mentioned in videos. Its only 45 min from me and rode my first coaster there The double Loop. They had the best lil water park section called Turtle Beach. SO many Great memories growing up going to Geauga Lake.

I'm so happy you did a video on it and btw I love all your vids especially the alton towers ones as it is my local park and watching your videos made me more confident to ride them! @@tomdaniel3374 It isn't my favourite ride at Alton Towers, but when the lineup of coasters is that solid that's not a negative. It's a good coaster, but overshadowed by some hall of famers.

Moral of the story is ride everything especially the older rides because especially with the state of the theme park industry in the UK now (and Covid-19 will only make things worse and likely finish off a few struggling parks entirely) you may never get another chance. I almost chickened out of the Thunder Looper as a 12yo but glad I rode it in the end as the next year it was gone.

Rameses revenge was such an exciting part of my early thrill ride obsession! It used to really frustrate me that the fountains would lower with the carriage and not soak us.. on rare hot days after queuing for 90 mins I wanted the water treatment! Great ride, loved the queue through the market place rooftops. Reminded me of Aladdin.

Had a chance to ride the one in Chessington in 2015, it was honestly one of the most thrilling experiences you could have in the UK! On our first ever visit to Alton Towers we only went for the bigger rides and didn't pay attention to ripsaw. Little did we know it would get dismantled the next season. I still have maps that show the ride, sad to see it go 😔

I was standing next to the Twister and watched it, and had to go, "hell no." I was not brave enough to ride it; some rides make me sick to my stomach and that had a huge potential to. I did ride the Enterprise though as often as I could--that and the Witches Wheel are amazing (though I have no clue where the Enterprise ended up) and didn't cause me issues. There was a lot of things that were happening that summer at Geauga Lake and we'd hope in the car and just ride across 303 there jumping around the traffic jam. The park will remain part of my memories. I even found my print photos of the park on the 4th of January digging into my closet from that very day. Thank you for the memory and I'm sad that the rides were removed. I know how popular GL's TT was!

I used to run the topspin Excalibur in Walibi Holland up until 2017. Operators had 4 preprogrammed settings to choose from, and the longest one could manage 4 spins max if the weight was properly distributed before it breaked. Even then we had people throw up sometimes, don't want to imagine the mess if it were to go a 100 spins! 🤢 Never been in it myself, but it always was fun to watch the guest in it, especially with the water fountains on max in summer and see it splash the thing full on. People always enjoyed it, wanted to ride again and again, line could get quite long too especially on hot days. Wonder how it does today. Nice memories.☺️ Interesting and enjoyable video, coming from a standpoint of having run one of this ride type.
