Martin Sheen gave many excellent performances on Insight, but this has to be his tour de force. I watched it a couple of months ago and still sticks with me. Anthony Costello also outstanding. So glad to have found Insight shows on KZbin.

I saw this probably 40 years ago on Pub Access channel. It has always stayed with me. I remember seeing on a Sunday morning or afternoon. I think the show came on after Davey and Goliath. I actually thought it was a made up memory. I happened to stumble upon the PBS show Hollywood Priest. They showed snippet of Clowns of Freedom and interview with Martin Sheen. I was thrilled. Glad this posted on it. This from a Lutheran. Blessings.

Martin Sheen would play another man who would die by a firing squad in the true story of The Execution of Private Slovak, a made-for-TV 1974 movie.

For those historians out there, this is an example of the Catholic Church's dedication to the human rights issue in Latin America and the growth of the Liberation Theology movement. Sadly, that all came to an end with John Paul II, who talked a good game on human rights, but ultimately chose the side of dictators. Not only did he distance the Church from the support of human rights in Latin America, but he systematically dismantled the Liberation Theology movement within the Church. (Footnote: The person he put in charge of this was the ex-Hitler youth, Cardinal Josef Ratzinger...later known as Pope Benedict XVI.)

You lied about John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI.

@@cbalducc Care to elaborate on that? Facts and history can be rather inconvenient to those who like to whitewash the history of the Catholic Church. My guess is that you are a sentimentalist who knows nothing of the history. In any case, here is a place for you to start digging...if you really want to know the truth: Just explore the reasons why the Catholic Church is dying in Latin American AND why so many Latin American Catholics who settle outside their countries are flocking to non-Catholic, usually-evangelical, protestant congregations. Hint: It largely involves what the Catholic Church did/did not do in Latin America in the 70s, 80s, and 90s.
