When Genna gets comfortable and just speaks her mind, it is so engaging and easy to listen to. The Fallout 76 discussion is a great example of this, and she kills it! I think as time goes by Genna is going to be so natural in her hosting capability, and I'm looking forward to it. 1st hour was a bit cringey (my opinion)

@@me2olive Sadly i think that's also part of the problem, the show has a built up name for itself. too fill the shoes of it might be an impossible task. A good example is two and a half men, with charlies sheen being kicked off and replaced the show was never the same again and many people stopped watching it because the chemistry was never the same. I'm not saying she isn't doing good for what she say, of course she is. but when i watch it something just feels off... lot of it feels forced rather than natural, and sure in time this could become better and the cogs could start turning, but personally i've all but stopped watching to the show, ive come back a few times but everytime it feels very forced. But this is my personal opinon and of course to others like yourself i might be very wrong, and that is fine. thats great that people like it. i mostly just want to voice my opinion, not to say she is bad and should stop doing it, but to point out things like she doesn't need to always butt into what jesse and dodger are saying. Or if she can temp give the reins too the other two till she gets her bearings and becomes more natural at it. More food for thought

@@Ricepudding42 The problem is when people naysay *that* is what creators tend to take to heart. Be careful what you say on the internet, especially when you're communicating in a way that takes a lot of context out of it(emotion and subtlety is very hard to convey over text). I personally think GB is killing it. I miss TB, but I think I actually prefer what Genna has done with the show. She'll only get better as she gets used to it, so until then try not to be negative about things she cannot immediately change. You have to understand, she had this thrust upon her suddenly, she didn't get to naturally grow like TB and like 99% of other content creators did.

Major problem with the idea of Bethesda having lots of money but evidently not spending any to help the studio working on Fallout 76 is that the more money they spend the less money they make from microtransactions. The game is designed with minimal resources and doesn't even have NPCs in it. It's designed to try and make a profit with the least amount of money spent.

It's one thing for companies to give the copout excuse of something along the lines of 'it's filled with REAL LIFE player characters!', but to then release a shell of a game with dialogue options between people anything less than what Divinity does really makes it seem like they were just bullshitting all along.

55:13 I don't think Husky would receive the warm welcome that most starcraft youtubers should get. I'm still really bummed about him deleting his videos. Edit: I am thankful for MATN's different opinion on F76, while I may not agree with it. What he said about after the first 2 hours in F4, however, is true. In fact, the funny thing is that you can actually change stuff around, you can join "the badguys" being The Institute, you can join the BOS which are basically mecha nazis at this point, and you can choose whom you side with and some choices lock others out, like the BOS locks out the RR, the Institute locks ALL OTHER factions out, stuff like that makes for different choices. The problem in this is, however, that these choices have very little effect, for the endings don't really change much. There are two major problems, which essentially boil down to one problem, and that is laziness on Bethesda's part. There aren't as many unique quests as there should be, the radiant quest system should be there to SUPPORT the quests that were already there. Having to liberate outpost after outpost for the Minutemen before getting actual quests is extremely boring and just busywork, and that makes for the feeling that the game lacks substance, which it does. There should have been AT LEAST DOUBLE the amount of UNIQUE quests for it to feel somewhat alright, and at least two more main towns, with an appropriate amount of content in them, and the game would have felt WAY better, already. Also, the dialogue design was just horrible for roleplay, so far to the point that the alternative start mod was alluring simply because you can get to stop pretending you're a father that is urgently looking for his lost son, while spending weeks on building a homestead. To build on the homestead, the amount of build it yourself towns was too high, and the quests were boring. Having a couple less locations, more unique settlers with unique quests, now that would have been amazing. Add a auto-build plan option for the towns (as sim settlements does) and suddenly, that would make it amazingly fun, and actually feel like the minutemen are protecting the settlers so that they can rebuild.

I agree with a lot of what MATN says about 76, even though I have no pull to play it. That being said, he seems to be doing with this, what others do with Dark Souls, by saying "The story is amazing!". Story is what is currently happening. Current events. What he is talking about, with the audio logs leading you to the next, is technically not story. It's lore. Lore is something that has already happened. Dark Souls has amazing Lore, but the story of the series is "keep pushing through and find out what has already happened." Because all of the amazing vistas and places you find are the aftermath of something much more cool than what you are doing. The same can be said of 76, and while I love that style of narrative, to say that Fallout 76 has great story is just objectively wrong, and to rely on the narrative of lore in a multiplayer game is a bad move, as lore is made to be soaked up, something which you want to do alone. Story can be played cooperatively, but lore is less effective here.
@asiamatron
@asiamatron 6 жыл бұрын
Well said and yeah lore is different from plot or story. The problem with lots of lore is I often feel like all the interesting stuff happened before I came along. The game is telling me about all this cool stuff that I won't be able to experience in the game.

I think the rise of MOBAs hurting RTSes has partially to do with the fact that for many of us - especially as we grew older - the hectic overloading chaos of fast-paced RTSes like SC2 was always too much. But, we didn't really have an alternative. And hectic and chaotic as MOBAs can be, the ones less time-intense to play per round like HotS enable a similar "feel" of control without overburdening the user - it's just a single unit + keeping tabs on 5-9 other units. Much easier to process, similar endorphine spike when you win.

( 00:32:00 for context) To be fair Genna, the loot packs in Siege are by far the fairest of all loot boxes. In my opinion, all loot boxes should be based on Siege's system because it's that fair. If you want to know more: Every game you win you visibly see a spinner go around that has a percentage in the centre. If it lands on the white bar then you get a loot pack. Every game you play (win or lose) your percentage to win raises. You can also see every single thing it is possible to win AND buy the things you want to win instead of trusting lady luck. Now although you can buy the things individually with real money, there is NO WAY to buy loot packs with real money, it is only in-game currency AND everything is 100% cosmetic. I'm not mad, I'm not trying to rant or anything, I just figured that you should know that Siege is in no way a terrible with their loot box/loot pack system.

I'm sorry but if your idea that Fallout 4 has "freedom" because of letting you just murder a faction outright is very basic and yes it is VERY limiting. Yes there is the freedom to murder right on the spot, but wheres the depth to that? Its murder or take on boring tasks. That isn't depth at all. Also I DID shoot Shaun in the face right as the door opened. The game broke, I was stuck in the room, couldn't leave, retried it, game still broke. The game literally held me, saying "nope you have to play our story". Another example is that when you have the battle where all the factions are battling each other for the runaway synths underground, I pandered to all the factions and accepted the battle through Shaun. Got to the location, shot the courser in the face who didn't aggro after several shotgun blasts, everyone was friendly to me, I was able to go and just walk around the entire battle, sitting down for a bit and able to just club everyone in the vicinity on all sides without any aggro, murdered the runaway synths, reported to Shaun and I COULDN'T say I MURDERED THEM! I even reloaded that segment and it played out the same. Unless my game fucking broke to all hell I have to say you are just so so wrong on saying Fallout 4 had any sort of "depth". Unless you count "depth" as shooting someone in the face or not. I'm glad you can enjoy the game and everyone has their own views, but oh man...I don't think I can take the positives seriously when you think Fallout 4's faction interactions had depth.
@machonacho95

@@machonacho95 I've considered that and have thought about returning to the game patched and modded up. But I will still say that it feels absolutely disingenuous to say that people who found Fallout 4 to lack depth didn't reach far enough into the game. Especially if your first examples are "well you can just murder a faction outright, thats choice and consequences with depth". No thats simply "Murder or not to murder".

1:15:30 - But Jon, that's not story. That's lore. Lore and environmental storytelling are great to add life to your world, but it's not a main story thread. And it's made even worse by the exact thing you point out (and this is beautifully shown in your C.A.T.S. co-op with Nerd3); if this is supposed to be a multiplayer experience, who's going to sit at a terminal for 10 minutes to read through some rando's email inbox, while your friend is waiting, getting bored and smacking things on the head with a stick. If Skyrim didn't have the whole Dovakhin/civil war main questline(s), you wouldn't say the game had "a story" because you can read a million in-game books. It would be a completely open sandbox with tons of random quests and adventures, and a rich history/lore you could find out about, but there's no main story. You wouldn't say a play in a theatre had a story, if all of it was solely in the programme. Whether that's a good thing or not is a different question. Do you need a main quest/story line in a game, or is it enough to have a rich world with random stuff to do to explore? What most responses so far have shown for Fallout in particular is that.. yes, for many of the series fans, it IS necessary to have a main plot. Also, to respond to your point soon after. Just because people disliked and "memed" the subpar story in Fallout 4, doesn't mean they don't want ANY story! It means exactly the opposite, they want GOOD story. That's either Bethesda admitting they're no longer capable of writing a decent story, and just not even trying. Or they're massively out of touch with their audience.

The problem with Bethesda Games is that they have the same bugs in every game, bugs that modders fix inside a month, sometimes inside a day. But BGS themselves never release a patch for these bugs. And now 76, which we can't mod, has the same bugs; only worse.

This was and is all disingenuous. Robots are also NPCs and a few of them are quite interesting and fun. Audio logs and leaving the quests to be found via exploring and reading and mostly unmarked...thats... that's kinda a staple of the fallouts everyone loves but because everyone wants to hate fallout 76 its suddenly not okay here. You are a literal crazy person vomiting lies and vitriol into the world so you can jump on the hate train. Fallout 76 is an incredibly faithful fallout game, going so far as to make you feel more alone moment to moment than any other fallout game ever has only occasionally coming into contact with another player and it's very fleeting. Let's try being realistic from now on.

"Mobile Market is one of the biggest markets." Yes it is. Mobile games rake in alot of money and there is nothing wrong with Blizzard wanting to develop games in the mobile market, but not at the expense of their playerbase. Genna was right when she said Blizzard shit the bed because they completely lost touch with their community. The biggest problem with Diablo Immortal is the sheer disrespect it shows towards the fans. The game, as shown, is being seen as a the primary focus of Blizzard's attention right now when it comes to Diablo and nothing else. If it is true that Blizzard is actually working on other projects they should have showed that off as well with Immortal. But they didn't, and they should most definitely get shit for it. .

I get the sense that Genna wanted to hate on Fallout 76 so hard and was holding her tongue when the guest was speaking fairly positive of it. As much as she had a conciliatory perspective to Fallout 76 in this podcast, I would not be the least bit surprised if she went on the hating bandwagon again with Jim in the next one, as if Jon's perspective meant nothing. Which is fine if she doesn't like the game. However, I wonder if she will actually give the game a fair go before next week's podcast.

@@karenlowe9283 I wouldn't be so dismissive of Many a True Nerd as a Bethesda lover in much the same way someone could be dismissive of Genna as Bethesda hater (which I'm not doing). Were Genna just any other person like you or I, I wouldn't have any qualms about how well formed or otherwise her opinion is of the game. However, she has a platform that she and her late husband has built on based on objective game reviews (not to be mistaken for unbiased; we can't escape our own biases). She said herself, she spent more time messing with the ini files than she did playing the game. Hardly confidence building for an informed opinion, particularly considering how eager she was to hate on the game from the get go. If she gives Fallout 76 a fair go based on the views given by Many a True Nerd as she indicated in the podcast, great! Regardless of whether she find some merit in the game in spite of its obvious flaws or hates on it even harder. Maybe it's just me but based on what I saw in the podcast, I doubt that that is going to happen. Which would be very disappointing if that's the case given the history and legacy of this channel. Objective reviews was what I came here for week after week over many years. Anyhow, we'll see how things play out next week. I would like to be pleasantly surprised. Not that she suddenly loves Fallout 76 (hell, even I don't love the game) but she's comes with a sufficiently informed and objective opinion. That's all.

To add to the Fallout 76, I decided to get it partly due to it being West Virginia, I used to go camping in the Shenandoah mountains when I was younger, so kinda had a bit of nostalgia for that, and during the beta I decided to use my experiences to tell friends it isn't ready, don't get it unless its 50% off. That seems more fair with it the way it currently is. Also the Stash limits are God aweful! It is going to encourage alt-mules to carry excess.. that said I am having fun with it solo and with a friend, just can't recommend it to anyone yet, not till some of its worst problems get fixed. Stories are not about universes; a story's fictional universe is nothing more than set dressing. The Lord of the Rings isn't a great story because Tolkien had pages of middle-earth history, it's a great story because of its characters, its drama, its themes. I'm not saying that consistency isn't important, as it can be distracting if it's completely ignored. But I'd much rather read a story that has interesting characters etc. than a story that's simply consitent.

The engine is old (Fallout 76). Back in those days they tied framerate to a bunch of stuff. Probably made sense at the time. To change it, they would have to change the core engine mechanics. They don't want to do so. The framework is the issue.

Honestly, I'm very much a PC gamer, but I welcome these mobiles games with open arms. I think the only people who don't appreciate good mobile games (yes, they exist, and if you look in the right places you can find really really good ones) are the ones who never ever leave their computer. I spend more than 2 hours every day in a subway, so a big AAA mobile game set in universes I love are a welcome addition to my pocket PC. As long as they're good mobile games, of course (which, again, they do exist... but unfortunately a lot of the AAA ones are not even decent).

Detective Pikachu... As a gen 1 fan I'd liked to have something a bit more into what the original games were about, maybe even following Red, I know we had the Anime movie, but that didn't flow fantastically to me. I think it's a shame for the first Pokemon live action movie, this is what we get, this is like the spin off that is massively fun you get after the "more serious" piece or in this case just the "more original" piece. That said it looks like it could be a good movie. I'm pretty sure I will enjoy it, and anything Pokemon live action I'll take right now. I hope this becomes so succesful they wanna do a full blown pokemon league movie trillogy. But I completely disagree with Dodger, no I'm sick of the whole "le random" mentality Hollywood has right now, nothing is given weight, everything has to be bonkers, all dialogue in Star Wars has to sound like a stand up routine. I'm sick of that shit. The only reason why I think Detective Pikachu might be good, is because it seems like it'll actually go mostly serious, with cut aways of jokes.
