This is the first episode of a docuseries about New York's underworld at the turn of the 20th century. The plot is centered around Monk Eastman, his foe Paul Kelly, and their relationships with Tammany Hall. The film was featured in New Filmmakers Film Festival, NYC Indie Film Festival, and at Ludlow House. Further episodes are to be announced. #monkeastman #paulkelly #gangsofnewyork #jewishgangs #jewishgangsters

thanks! This was meant to be a docu-series. I may complete it someday. But I'd need to re-familiarize myself with the storyboard again. It's a very dense tale.

The squab wheelman was also a reference to the love Monk had for his pigeons - squab being a synonym for pigeon He did have a job as well , his father gave him money so that Monk could do the job he dreamed of - pet store owner- im not kidding either , the man loved animals

In Neil Hanson’s ‘The gangster that became a war hero’ book, he states that the pet store was likely just a rumor he started. “Yea I used to own a pet store but it closed down bc I couldn’t part ways with em, heh heh” or something like that. But who knows, I wasn’t there.

@ 10:23.. His occupation was ,bird seller, he even had a pet store on Broome st. Are you calling him a liar? Why would he lie about his occupation on official documents?..how dare you besmirch the reputation of such an upstanding citizen he 'never struck a blow nor turned a foul card' he was a war hero let it be known! Also there is absolutely no evidence of monk being Jewish himself.in point of fact there is overwhelming proof that he was of English/german protestant decent. He even had a protestant funeral as did his mother an grandparents. I think his gang was predominantly Jewish more by virtue of his location in the Jewish section than any loyalty to a particular race or religion. He lived in a Jewish area that was in danger of being lost to the five points gang as the gangs in the area were to fragmented so he saw an opening for a new giant gang. An so became the Eastman's/ Allen at cadets/ cherry st gang.. the largest street gang to ever walk the streets of NYC.

Oh yea? What years did he own the pet shop? I’m curious to see those documents. Also, it’s not stated here that he was a Jew, but the neighborhood he reigned mostly was, as u said. Further more, it’s expressed here that he was a war hero. But if u believe a quote about him ‘never struck a blow..’ makes me wonder if u have a romantic fantasy of him being some gentle being and not having a rough side, which was Monk’s calling card in the first place.

You don’t agree with Ferrara “Manhattan Mafia Guide” that Paul Kelly was never part of the Five Points Gang ?
