The Cobra H.I.S.S is Not a Tank!

The Cobra High Speed Sentry (H.I.S.S.) was never designed to be, marketed as, or intended as a tank, but somehow the term has stuck for decades since the vehicle's first release in 1983. Let's dispel that myth once and for all.

My local sheriff's department uses a ACP (I believe it's a variant of the AVGP Cougar, but don't quote me on that) for use with barricaded subject or other high-risk situations. There's no turret, there aren't tracks, but invariably whenever it has to get to deployed, people lose their minds about "why do police need tanks???" In other words, people are ignorant of facts, don't care, and just throw around terms that they THINK they understand.

I'm kinda curious when the army adopted the current definition of 'Tank', because the stated characteristics completely declassify historic vehicles that were once called tanks. Sherman? Tiger i & ii. Practically any predecessor to the M1 is no longer a tank.

I really enjoyed this, hahaha, straight up sounded like my dad (RIP) explaining this sort of thing to me. When you briefly mentioned the aircraft and specifically said fixed wing, you recovered a memory for me. My dad used to give me these plain cover looking manuals for me to look at in the 80’s, the one I remembered the most was some sort of aerial recognition book with pictures and facts about every aircraft used by the world’s militaries and he even gave me accompanying playing cards with aircraft silhouettes. Good stuff. Good memory to have pop on me. I think for the general public the reason everyone calls it a tank, or really any vehicle a tank is just because they see the so-called “tank” treads. Most people just don’t have military training so everything is oversimplified. I don’t think too much on it, but it was a good video, learned a lot, cool subject matter for sure and you were nice & funny about it. Bravo sir!

You could say the same for M4 Sherman. Its armor was thin and couldn’t bounce anything. The early 75 mm was good for fighting infantry but weak against tanks. When I was a kid I always wondered if the HISS was a tank or a mobile anti-aircraft vehicle. Because it didn't have 1 huge cannon like a tank. @@Its.Chad. My dad made up for it with how we played with the action figures. He was Force Recon from 1959-1970 with combat tours in '65, '66, '68, 69' and was an instructor at the Jungle Warfare Training Center in '64 and between his '65 & '66 tours, and between his '68 and '69 tours. He spent '67 in San Diego running recruits through the obstacle course. So when we played, we upended the living room. The sofa was a series of cliffs and plateaus, the coffee table made a canyon with the sofa, and underneath it was often a Cobra base.we would make pillow forts, and a blue blanket and towels we had would be various bodies of water. Potted plants got dragged into the room. Then dad would teach me small unit tactics. taught me a ton about ambushes and shit like that. It was pretty awesome. I never went into the military, but I did put that info to good use in a lifetime of D&D games, and in the occasional paintball competition. …though I suuuuucked at paintball. I was just good at planning the attacks.

I've got to say - having owned the original HISS back in the day and all, and I liked it them, but the design of the HISS always really bugged the practical side of me. I mean... ok, I get it kind of is supposed to look like a rearing cobra. But... BIG surfaces you're facing head on to aim at, big blind spot, no gun depression, the thing's just asking to be turned into scrap. Maybe the height adds to the "sentry" part of it, but... make it lower, drop that insane high track, go ahead and give it a turret then and you'll - potentially - have the basis for a HISS *tank.* (with appropriate alterations.) Part of me still likes the thing though :)

That is a M113 dressed up functionally to simulate a BMP2 in OPFOR training. It is not a front line vehicle in this configuration. It is strictly a training vehicle. The M113 does have several variants that have turreted weapons for AA and such, even missile and mortar carriages. Medvac variants and many more. So, this begs the question - are the MBTs out of the Mega Force toy line from Kenner actually considered tanks? The reason I ask is because the definition of a tank cannon's functional diameter. Both the V-ROCS MBT (Merkava analog) and the Triax MBT (Abrams analog) are stated to have a 150mm or 155mm cannon bore, which would make them more akin to mobile artillery. But, they're fast, too.

It's "not a tank" Chad! Great video, thanks for posting it. Working for the military exposes oneself to the various acronyms, language, and protocols used to communicate efficiently. Should any personnel mistaken a piece of equipment for what it isn't may jeopardizes the whole mission. It's a wonder why anyone would call the H.I.S.S. a tank. It's like calling my Corolla a Porsche. Thanks for the detailed descriptions of the different types of A.V.'s - loved it.

Its crazy you did this because i just had this debate on another channel telling the guy this hiss is not a tank . I am a Army vet who worked in an armor unit at Ft Knox so i know what a tank is ,but ofcourse some people love to argue about sht they know nothing about .I was a turret mechanic on the M60 A1 battle tank right about the time the M1 Abrams was introduced in the 80's .

Fascinating. Does the Joe Armadillo qualify as a tank or not? As for the HISS, like a lot of Cobra/Enemy stuff, it clearly was NOT intended to be very realistic. The people creating the Joe franchise wanted the good guys to be America-centric but were careful to try not to offend real-world enemies like Soviets, Chinese, etc.... Hence all the Cobra stuff looked like a blend of various influences, real world or sci-fi.
@Its.Chad.
@Its.Chad. 9 күн бұрын
Armadillo, no. Yeah, the Cobra stuff was always more advantaged than the JOE stuff and much more future forward designs. Still, the HISS was never intended to be called a ‘tank’ by the designers. It was a Sentry from the go.

I would classify this, prior to this explanation as a Catapilar Tread, light armor mobile troop attack vehicle. That is of course not a dismissal but a unqualified guess on my part. Forgive me for having called it a Tank as a kid, funny thing my great uncle was part of the design engineering team I think for the tread Assembly style the H.I.S.S. has the triangle driver arrangement. He was paid royalties for some contributions to engineering. I never really got to talk to him much as he lived in another state but my dad mentioned this when I was saying goodbye to my local Toys 'R' Us and we saw a ertl Treaded tractor and a Dinotrux Ty-rux in one aisle told about it. So I am not 100% on it but yeah if my dad was remembering it right, a modern style Treaded assembly with the triangle shape.
