'Big Brother' is already here in Europe, at least in Norway where I live. We can still use physical money but it's become more and more rare. Most people pay with their plastic cards. Banks and authorities will ask you questions if you deal with bigger amounts of bills. We're being more and more controlled, supervised.

I bought a $10 gold back from Coin Guy (thank you Nathan). It's so nice that I've mounted it in a gold frame and hung it on my wall. Talking point for any guests to our house as it's rarely (if ever) seen here in England.

You should do a video on how the Hispanic population is driving a lot of the US coin market. I've worked at a coin shop my friend owns for a few years. In our area in North Georgia, probably 50 percent of our customers are Hispanic. Their culture is very into collecting coins and stacking precious metals
@Spegtacular

A few Spanish countries were/are under a dictatorship and/or communist regime. I can see them stacking metals as an attempt to not be under full control of their government (the monetary system). The Hispanic population is also a significant one. I can see it impacting a lot and precious metals/coins is just one of those.

Coin collecting is alive and well! It is my main focus these days while the premiums on bullion are outrageous. I love filling sets, and currently finishing up another Mercury Dime set and a Buffalo Nickel set that was started by my grandfather and I inherited. Coin collecting isn’t dying. There are more and more people attending coin shows. However having said that, the coin collector has to know when a coin is going to cost to much. I’m in Canada and rarely buy from dealers in the U.S. due to the exchange rate, shipping, Canadian customs duties and taxes. For instance I purchased a reference book on Roman Republican Denarii a couple of months ago from a numismatic book seller in California. The book was $45, the shipping $55 U.S..The exchange rate was 33%, then I paid customs duties and taxes which brought the final amount to just over $150 Cdn. Because the book specialized in a specific area in numismatics I felt the cost was worth it.

Coin collecting isn’t dying. I used to wonder about the lack of young collectors myself until I figured out that (unlike me) most coin collectors don’t start collecting until they are much older…perhaps when they inherit a collection from an older relative. Lego collectors call the period between childhood Lego purchases and adult Lego collecting as their “dark ages”. Many hobbies have a similar kind of dark ages. I used to always be the youngest collector at shows…not anymore.

Hobby collecting is best done when interest is low. Not only are beautiful pieces and opportunities present, but availability is the highest as a rule. Wish I wasn't in such a tight budget or I might buy my collection back that I sold a while back when the market was screaming. (I remember the 1980/81 market. Exciting times.) (Later I bought a couple eagle/double eagles for about $250/oz or less at auction. Mad bidders who didn't get my pieces screamed at me "You'll never get your money back! You bid too high!" If I was in the business of selling coins, the health of the hobby would concern me, but as someone who just takes part in the hobby, my only worry is if there's no longer an available supply. But let's be real: coin collecting has existed almost as long as coins, and isn't going away anytime soon. If it's in a bit of a slump that just means collectors can take advantage of good deals for a while. This too shall pass.

Today regular coin usage is way down due to exact change card transactions. People seem to discard them as soon as they can, not collect them. I’m sure there are older collectors who do it for the history and nostalgia and a few for numismatic investment, but it’s dying off, as these people die, the kids inherit and are quick to sell for what they can get for them.

I traditionally stack bullion at the best prices I can get,, bars and rounds. Used to buy alot of eagles also bit they are overpriced these days. However when spot price and premiums get too high, I take a break from stacking bullion and focus on numismatic coins and go back when spot and the premiums go down. I find it the best for me personally because I want to have both. It's gonna be special when I'm gone and my family finally cracks open my giant safe noone has seen inside before and will have tons of all different items to go through.. but also never put all your eggs in one basket

There's no sales tax on precious metals in the state of missouri. I learned that from the guys (no pun intended) at river city coins.

That is not entirely accurate but do have better laws than others. Here’s the info: The state of Missouri requires the collection of sales taxes on certain products sold by APMEX and delivered to a Missouri address. Please note: The below is not a comprehensive description of sales tax laws and requirements in the state of Missouri. It is only intended to provide the reader with a brief overview of those sales tax laws and requirements currently in effect in the state of Missouri that relate to the reader’s transactions with APMEX. What Precious Metals Are Taxed? Taxes must be collected on Copper products, certain bullion items less than .90 fine, non-investment coins, currency, accessory items and processed items. All other products sold by APMEX are exempt from these taxes. Taxable Products in Missouri The following definitions apply to products on which these taxes must be collected in Missouri: Non-Investment Coins. Any coins that do not have a value greater than their face value. Currency. Money issued by a sovereign government in any paper form as a medium of exchange. Accessory Items. Items such as holders, tubes or coin flips. Processed Items. Precious Metals that have been processed by third parties into items valued on more than their Precious Metal content, such as jewelry, statues or colorized coins.

In the old South during the Civil War people buried their silver, silver items and gold to keep the damn Yankees from stealing it. There is no telling how much that is still buried.

So, if I was in The Coin Guy's store buying, then I would have to pay FL tax, if I pick up the phone and call him from NC where I live to make the deal, is he going to charge me FL tax? we don't pay tax on gold or silver in NC no matter what state I buy it from and shipped to me, all the Bullion and Coin shops on ebay already know this and never charge me tax buying from CA or NY etc.
@Spegtacular
@Spegtacular Жыл бұрын
It depends on what you buy. Processed bullion items are still taxable even in North Carolina. That may not be what you’re referring to but something you may need to know about. Also, most of the tax stuff is weird when it comes to “online bullion dealers” because they’re not necessarily a brick and mortar shop and therefor the taxes are all over the place depending on where YOU live. However, when you’re dealing with an individual on the phone, you’re probably going to be dealing with their taxes. But that being said, call the business to confirm.
