After years of work, the Coke & Mentos guys have harnessed the explosive power of these geysers and achieved human propulsion! 108 bottles of Coke Zero and 648 Mentos mints combine to propel EepyBird into the annals of unusual records.

How Does This Work?
This is one not to try at home.
The Coke Zero & Mentos Rocket Car uses a piston mechanism: a six-foot long rod sits inside a six-foot long tube attached to each bottle of Coke Zero. When the Mentos drop into the soda, the pressure tries to push the rod out of the tube. With 108 rods all pushing at once, that gives us a lot of power.
All that power is pushing against a wall braced with 3,600 pounds of cement blocks. So all the force is directed into moving the Coke Zero & Mentos Rocket Car forward. We get one big push for six feet, and then it's all coasting from there.

Yes! My son tried to make a small scale model car that used Coke+Mentos for propulsion as a science fair project last year. Didn't think about the backstop! (Sadly, his failed to move more than an inch or two; tried a single two-liter bottle and two one-liter bottles; both 'plain' (ingenious "drop mentos then let bottle flop backwards to be the rocket" mechanism,) as well as through a narrower nozzle. The backstop really would have helped.

You'd get better distance if the mento's stream was directed against a turbine that drove the wheels instead of just against a wall, if you can produce a constant pressure stream you could get some good distance, use the rocket blast against the wall to get moving, then use the turbine stream to keep the momentum up, just something to think about ... ;-)

Hmm not sure how practical it would have been but if you'd have launched from what effectively could have been a 'piston' you would have had a a higher initial acceleration. ie. Launch from solid rod with the 'exhaust' pipe slotted around it. The force pressure builds up in the chamber providing you with more energy to accelerate you harder. Your main problem would still be to keep the momentum going and that would be even less practical (although probably not impossible) to do.
