Күн бұрын

At the end of WW2, the Cold War had begun. From Stalin to Reagan, from the Nuclear Arms Race to The Cuban Missile Crisis, from the Berlin Wall to Vietnam and Korea, this is the story of the Cold War. The World would lay divided between two great superpowers, the United States and the Soviet Union. It would not be a conventional war, with the two sides never directly fighting, instead, it would be an ideological battle between communism and capitalism, the East vs the West and the resulting struggle for ideological influence and power.

Both sides would stockpile nuclear weapons, with questions over how to use, control and eliminate them becoming central to the conflict. The conflict would come to an end when Gorbachev’s reforms, Glasnost and Perestroika began to unravel the Soviet Union itself.
Reformers began to emerge across Eastern Europe, and in 1989 a string of democratic revolutions would see nearly every communist government ousted from power. On November 9th, the most symbolic monument of the Cold War, the Berlin Wall, would come down, and Germany itself would be reunited the following year. The Soviet Union would collapse in 1991, dissolving into 15 independent states, a surprisingly quick and bloodless conclusion to the Cold War, a conflict which had dominated international relations for over 40 years.

For a 15 minute summary of an almost-50-year era in history, this was pretty good. Gave enough detail to (hopefully) give everybody a general understanding of the Cold War without taking a lot of time with other details. I will say, though, that I wish the Space Race had gotten a mention. Otherwise, an exceptional video.

This video does do a good job of explaining the Cold War in 16 and a half minutes or so, which is impressive. However, I think they should have included Nixon’s trip to China, which led to a significant shift in the global stage. I also noticed one error: The Domino Theory has the most influence during the early sixties, and was one of the justifications used for America’s involvement in the Vietnam War. It was not used to justify America’s involvement in the Korean War.

damn, I really think this is one of the best video essays I've ever seen - I think that everyone should watch this at some point in their lives to understand more about why the modern world is the way it is, this video essay really brings so much of the modern world into context... the importance of Nato, the importance of standing up to communism and communist dictators (due to the lack of freedom to criticise power under communist dictators), as well as what happened in Vietnam, what happened for Germany as well as the dissolution of the soviet states, as well as how BRUTALLY FUCKING CLOSE WE ALL CAME TO NUCLEAR WAR wow - thank fuck for that one russian dude for keeping a level head, god damnit humans are crazy, this video essay is easily 12/10

Fun fact, the term superpower was designated for 3 countries after WW2, the US and the Soviet Union obviously, but also the British Empire until the Suez Crisis in 1954 proved they were not a superpower anymore and they lost their superpower status. in 1950 there were 3 superpowers. By the year 2000 there was only one remaining.

I would say it is important to note that Kennedy agreed to remove the nuclear missiles he had in Turkey after the Cuban missile crisis. That was one of the main reasons why the USSR put missiles in Cuba to begin with. So it was agreed upon that the US would remove their missiles in Turkey and the USSR would remove the missiles in Cuba.
@nancy4don
@nancy4don 3 күн бұрын
Except that it was agreed that it would be done at a later date, and secretly. The Jupiter missiles in Turkey were supposed to have been replaced or removed already, as they were obsolete.
