I’m doing three trays from saved seed from three different varieties that I purchased and planted out as nursery starts last year. Started mine on December 21st and they are doing really well so far. I’ve got lots of little shady areas in my garden so I’m excited to have tons of plants for those areas.

Excellent Jennifer!! Thanks for sharing . If this is your first time transplanting nursery started Coleus....MAKE CERTAIN YOU HARDEN THEM in their pots over a two week period. I have videos on this and will cover it upcoming in the months ahead of your not familiar with the process. Also be patient in transplanting them.....All depending of course on where you live.... Planting unhardened Coleus too soon in too windy or cool weather will almost guarantee failure. Optimal weather conditions are The Heat & HUMIDITY of Summer. Please dont be discouraged if I seemed to paint a bleek or complicated picture....Just a few lessons I Learned in the past because I was impatient to get them outside!!! Good luck and please SUBSCRIBE if you havent...also You can share pictures or questions on my Jim's Wholiest of Coleus Facebook page!! HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

Hi Jim, thank you for all your info & help with growing coleus plants, I’am very new at this but I’m learning so much from you. Can you please tell me what to do when the plants start to have leaves that turn downward & curl in under the leaves? I would really appreciate sone help with this as a couple of mine have started doing this the last few days that are around 4 weeks transplanted into new containers.
@Jimswholiestofcoleus4 жыл бұрын
Hi Onibella...sorry for the late reply. I get many Questions and some dont show up sometimes on my notification feed :( SORRY Growing Coleus from seed isnt that difficult....I like using the Jiffy pod tray system along with a stand up indoor Greenhouse which you can get online or in stores. I also use an LED Growlight overhead to give them the much needed light to germinate. Its important to keep your Coleus WARM and watered but not saturated. Curling leaves usually means they are cold.

Hey hey from OHIO... This is my first time growing from seeds... I am at the point where I have the two leaves(ears)... How long do I keep the clear lid on the plants???? Please and thank you
@Jimswholiestofcoleus9 ай бұрын
Excellent question. You want to keep the dome on...but instead of it snapped or sealed in place....just pop it off to one side just a bit to allow much needed air to circulate....but it will still retain the moisture needed for other seeds to germinate and continue to grow. If you are using a heat mat and all Germinations are showing ....discontinue the heat mat. Also continue using Growlights if you are using them.....but now turn them off about 10pm so the little plants can rest. Plus a great deal of growth occurs overnight during recovery. Keep the dome popped to the side for at least another 2-3 weeks. Then remove it completely each day for a few hours.... lightly water any pods that will have started to dry out.. once your Germinations are showing clear true leaves with color or dark spots you can remove the dome completely until you transplant them.

Hey Jim, I've used hydrogen peroxide with water in a squirt bottle to spray that white fuzzy mold and planted seeds and it takes care of it. Theres a mixture, 5 TB of HP per pint of water in the bottle. Quick germination there! I'm inspired!

How Kathy ...Thank you for that info on Hydrogen peroxide mix. Someone had mentioned that last season and I completely forgot....probably because they didnt give me the correct formula. I was also a bit nervous about how it may affect the germinations so I just used the model brush tip. Have a very Happy new year!!!

Good video. If you put the dry peat pellets in very hot water to open them, this kills the fungus seeds in the soil, so I believe. I use hot water and have no fungus problems. When the plants are in use cold water, obviously...

hey, Jim do you grow some of the "trailing varieties" of coleus? I was looking at a couple from that Rosy gardens place. wondering how they would do in a sort of sunny windowbox. specifically, burgundy wedding train and trailing salamander. El brighto, and Inky fingers were the other 2 I liked best. Should I just start them from seeds maybe. (would start areound feb 15th).
@Jimswholiestofcoleus5 жыл бұрын
Hey Joe....I've never had much luck with the smaller trailing varieties PARTICULARLY in Sun. They are typically smaller leaved dark varieties... I highly recommend Jitters varieties for window boxes or hanging baskets along with any of the larger Rainbow color varieties. I live roseydawngardens....I Always buy a few new varieties to try each year...but Joe....if you have seeds Go for it!! Growing your own is AWESOME!!! Let me know how your making out.

What if only 1 or 2 leaves grow out of 72 pods? Do I keep the lid on longer or is that all I’m going to get and should remove the lid? From north central Wisconsin. Thanks!!
@Jimswholiestofcoleus7 ай бұрын
Do you mean you seeded all 72 and 1 or 2 sprouted from all 72? If so I would not remove the lid but pop it slightly to the side a cracked to allow air to circulate. If only 2 of the 72 germinated then leave the top on. Did u sow them all the same time? If so then wait another week...then resow. Remember COLEUS SEEDS ARE NOT TO BE BURIED.... Drop them on top of moistened pod and gently press down . They also need alot of bright daylight or Growlights.
@lauriejorgensen49227 ай бұрын
@@Jimswholiestofcoleus Yes I seeded all 72 pods at the same time. Followed your directions exactly. Now this morning I had 10 more pop up. Guess I should have waited a little longer. They’re sitting in a south window but maybe I should add some grow lights anyway? Thank you for your advice!
@Jimswholiestofcoleus7 ай бұрын
Yes Be patient. If you're only using daylight and it's a bit cool overnight then yes they will be slow to germinate. Growlights are always a good option for quick Germinations.

Never seen pods like that . Can you tell us about them. I want to start using seeds for my flowers this next year.
@Jimswholiestofcoleus4 жыл бұрын
Hi Shirley....Glad too!! They are a great effective way to start anything by seed. They are sold at most Home Depot or Lowes. They are essentially compacted peat discs that you add a measured warm to room temp water to ...they expand....they have a thin netting which you gently tear open exposing the peat....where you plant the seed. The dome is used to maintain the moist Ecosystem . Here is an Amazon link to the ones I use....www.amazon.com/dp/B07L497KFY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_zggqFb7VDSXRD

My seeds are not germinating.....any suggestions I am using seed tray with seed starting mix and a plant light.....about how long does it take?
@Jimswholiestofcoleus5 жыл бұрын
Hi Rachel.....Theres probably a simple solution.....No worries. Of course I need more info...how long ago did you sow your seeds?? If under 10 days they may still germinate. ARE THERE ANY GERMINATING? Possible reasons why they are slow or not..... Improperly burying the seeds as opposed to being dropped on the surface. Coleus seeds need light!!! Warmth..... Are the tray(s) warm enough??? And moisture....are the pods moisture level correct.....or simply are they moist ENOUGH. Some things you can try.....If you aren't using g a plant grow light....get one....if you are using one continue to do so but if there is a location....a window or table that gets Sunlight.....give the tray(s) a shot of sunlight..... Winter sun isnt strong....(unless your in the Tropics lol)... But not long....maybe an hour or 2 if not intense or too direct. Perhaps if the pods feel on the light or dry side drop a bit of water on each. Meantime Keep the tray covered. ULTIMATELY....Coleus seeds need 3 things LIGHT, WARMTH AND MOISTURE. Lastly... the seeds are immature.....unlikely if you purchased your seeds from a reputable co. like Burpee etc.....But Rachel Let me know how long since you last sowed them....I have a tray that's germinating...and one that's partly....slower. Be patient.
@rachelstallings34285 жыл бұрын
So Jim thank you so much for your rapid response. The seeds were sown 6-7 days ago with a plant light but they were not covered....maybe that was the problem ????? Hello, I have been watching your videos since early summer this year. I tried rooting in water, some of my favorite coleus. I had roots in a week. OMG what do I do with them now in sept 2020
@Jimswholiestofcoleus4 жыл бұрын
Hi Virginia! Thanks for watching my channel...I hope you stick around....Although Fall & Winter my channel is less active...I get busy again in January.....and one of the things I touch on along the way are keeping your Rootings going from now until May when You can pot them . Yes You can keep Rootings alive for months & months. Now You MAY....lose a rooting here & there...I do...which is why I keep multiple cuttings. Rootings with extensive rootballs ( after even a month they can be huge) certainly grow well when potted in Spring. Look at the videos I have filmed on my Coleus Planters on my property. 90% are Rootings. The huge Saturn.....developed from four Rootings planted in a 14" Pot......in a sort of circle about 6" in from each edge. By July..... BOOOOM!! My Fishnet Stockings Coleus....same.... (Green with black fishnet lines). All potted in late May early June when all danger of cold temps have passed..... left outdoors sheltered until they grow in.....Fertilized with Green box Miracle grow Plant food. So keep those rootings going... BUT....YOU MUST CHANGE THE WATER.... at least weekly...and gently rinse rootballs once they get larger as debris, dirt etc gets trapped.... Good luck & let me know how you make out. Im also on Instagram if you want further regular advice

Two weeks old waaay too soon for fertilizer!! Do not start fertilizer until they are at least 2 months old.....give them time to mature ....fertilizer may burn delicate immature roots.

I enjoy your videos, but am still a little confused. You sow seed each year as annuals? Then you take cuttings and seeds for the following year? They won't stay outdoors and reseed themselves, or is it just to get a head start on the season? New to all this, but they look amazing.
@Jimswholiestofcoleus4 жыл бұрын
Hi Simon...quite alright. Coleus are technically considered Perennials because they produce seeds which drop off if left in the "wild" but only in their Tropical native locations in Southeast Asia & Austrailia. Coleus seeds develop on the very tops of Coleus plants throughout the mature growing cycle. I have many videos on the when & hows of their development and seed harvesting. It is pretty easy to do. The seeds once properly separated can be stored & viable for up to 5 years. I keep a large amount because I sell them and use them . Not every Coleus develops seed stalks easily. I have a Black stockings Coleus which took me three years to coax a seed stalk to develop....thru multiple cuttings and Rootings. Not All Coleus can legally be seeded or propagated if it is labeled as "Patented" but seeds commonly sold in store packets like Burpee Rainbow or Wizard mix are all unpatented and free to propagate and collect seeds...or in my case grow and resell in my Farmers market. Finally those Coleus which I've had no luck with seed stalk development and want to expand in numbers I take multiple cuttings of and root...then create more Coleus and repeat. Also Rootings in Colorful bud vases make great decorations in windowsills etc. Hope I cleared things up! Thanks for the comment !!

Appreciate your input. I find myself adding water when I'm very busy but I prefer to rinse with fresh water as well in particular when there is organic matter such as Dropped leaves which inevitably fall in especially in my smaller Defiance Rootings....not to much on larger foliage ones such as Fishnets. But I have found that I've been very successful in water changes especially after sitting in sun.
