“It's a huge failure of democratic messaging and a very effective use of the big lie told by Donald Trump and his allies”
Joe Biden has achieved greater "domestic accomplishment than any president since the 1960s” but all this doesn't matter if their messaging is a "huge failure" says Allan Lichtman, Professor of History at American University

The economy is going well if you’re in the healthcare field or work for the government. There is where the money is thrown at these days. These people think if they just tell us long enough and loud enough, how happy we are they will convince us how great things are. After all things are great for them. They must be great for everybody.

This guy is the king of wishful thinking. "Messaging" is not the issue. Telling people whose grocery bills, rents, and other expenses are skyrocketing that "the economy is doing great" because the stock market is up and unemployment is historically low is tone deaf. Those people are just going to rightly think that the Democratic party is completely out of touch with the working poor and working people in general. Read Ruy Teixeira.

And what does that have to do with the Federal Government? Biden is releasing some gasoline and diesel from the strategic reserve AGAINST the objections of the Rebooblicons, and that will attenuate the transportation costs. That might help. Food costs are more driven by taxes and fees charged at the State and local level. So, ask your Governor why food is more expensive. Are you favoring price controls at the Federal or the State level? How about wage increase limits? How about limiting profit levels and wholesale price increase limits? How much control do you want to give the Federal government to set prices?

GDP growth and stock market gains are great for the wealthiest 10% of Americans who own 90% of stocks. The working and middle classes have been brutalized by inflation and cost of living crisis. During trumps presidency, Americans gained 20% household net worth adjusted for inflation, while they have gained 0.7% in bidens term thus far. Bidenomics is serving corporations and the wealthy very well, but working people have been left behind. Also, failures on immigration, Afghanistan withdrawal, war in gaza have all dragged him down. Plus, he's old as dirt; I'm not confident he can govern for 4 more months, let alone 4 years.

Tell me, Professor Lichtman, do you buy your own food, or do you have servants who do that for you? Have you visited a grocery store recently? If you had, you would know that the price of food is still outrageous. If my sources are correct, the reason for inflated food prices is that the oligarchs who control our food supply are artificially keeping food prices high to increase their own profit margins. I agree that Biden has done a phenomenal job of governing. The stock market is booming, unemployment is at record lows, nearly 11 million new jobs have been created, and Biden is doing a good job supporting Ukraine, but food prices are still high. If Biden could bring food prices down, that is one thing that every American would see, and the message would be reinforced every time people bought groceries. And that's my two cents worth.

@daleviker5884 27 күн бұрын
"If my sources are correct, the cause of high food prices is oligarchs lifting profit margins". Maybe you need to talk to people other than your marksist buddies. The cause of high inflation is rampant government spending by Biden and other WEF-puppet governments trying to reshape society. And Biden has not "created 11m jobs". The economy simply came back to relatively normal after Covid and would have happened with or without Biden. And the Democrats all over the US have seen major cities turn into third world ghettoes of crime, squalor and drugs due to their pandering to minorities who don't accept law and order or family values.

it's not doing reasonably well, it's doing exceptionally well. Biden has the highest GDP growth since Bill Clinton. And government spending is way lower than under Trump. Trump added almost 10 trillion $ to the national debt. Lichtman is completly right. Biden is doing a great job, but is a disaster at communicating.

I think the mistake people make about the US economy is that the aggregate numbers look good and the financial markets are doing well, but the principal economic experience of ordinary people is the experience of inflation. Moreover, American voters usually don't vote based on foreign policy. Finally, the Democrats don't have a good look overall these days.

2016 Hillary Clinton was ahead in most polls and we all know how that ended
@gregparrott
@gregparrott 28 күн бұрын
As noted in the prior response, Clinton won the popular vote by 2.87 million (65,853,514 vs. 62,984,828). But the republicans were very effective at gerrymandering. The result was the largest ever disparity between the popular vote and electoral vote outcomes. Republicans tried even harder in 2020. Despite Biden winning the popular vote by ~7 million, a mere ~60,000 more votes ideally dispersed among a few of the swing states, could have yielded trump his coveted 2nd term. Pretty scary. That partially explains the B.S. they've been trying in Arizona, Pennsylvania, etc.

@@rodneycarmichael8333 Clinton won the popular vite by 2.8 million. Biden won the popular vote by 7 million. And yet, thanks to republican gerrymandering and the electoral system, Trump won in 2016 by something like 60,000 votes strategically cast in swing states. Similarly, trump could have won in 2020 ifs something like just 60k or 70k votes had been strategically cast (or 'found') in selective swing states. This back channel electoral means of voting circumvents what we perceive as a democratic system. This is compounded by recent republican efforts to outright manipulate the electoral system
