Collings have more clarity while martin has more vintage vibe with warmer tones. I prefer the traditional sounds of Martin over “modern” sounds of Collings!! YMMV!

Great video, guitars and picking here. I have my D18 in my lap while watching this =). I think in a Bluegrass jam setting, and no doubt..the D1. In a duo or recording, D18.

D-18 for me personally. I own a 2018 D-18 and it's my favorite guitar so I might be a little bit bias. I honestly prefer the sound though , Then again I think we are all trained by our ears and the sound of the Martin is so familiar to us all because so many of our favorite artists use them for there songs. Just my 2 cents.

You should have tuned the hi e and b strings on the D18..They were out.. but the D18 took this battle..warmer, richer, fuller , more vintage sounding with more bass and bottom end.

For these particular guitars, the D18 has a richer tone. There are regular D18's hanging in stores that sound really great. I happened to recently purchase one out of three D18's in stock. There's was an very distinct difference in each one...but it was an easy choice in picking out the one I purchased.

That's the best tip you can give anyone, try all of them! Especially when getting into handcrafted guitars like the D18 or the D1, sound differences between guitars can be very apparent. They're all good, but one of 'em will suit you the best ;)

Collings sounds brighter here than in any other youtube video-- not sure why-- could be the particular guitar or your mic-ing. . . it sounds almost "tinny". I doubt that's how it sounds in the room.

Both are great guitars. I'm luck to have a 1960 Martin D18 and a 2019 Collings D1T. Both amazing but different.

Wow, great playing, thanks. I think they both sound terrific. Perhaps the D-18 is a bit bighter and the Collings a little warmer. I might be making this up too.

Have you had your hearing checked lately? The D18 is definitely not brighter... The Collings is noticeably brighter with less bass and less bottom end which is typical of every model Collings I have played.

@billdedrick1914 Sorry to have offended you. I've had very little first hand experience with either Collings or Martin...I'm more of a Gibson guy. But, it's just the way things sounded to me on my crummy PC speakers. Happy Holidays.

Easy: you need both. Both are great guitars. I think Collings are a bit more demanding to play. More precision required, and less forgiving, but they are also more rewarding. It really comes to show in a jam situation, where a D18 gets overpowered, the Collings has seemingly endless headroom. On the flipside, i prefer a Martin when it comes to strumming. Thanks for the video.

i have both. in person my d18 doesnt even come close to the responsivness of my d1. its richer, louder and unbeleivable build quality
