I have a Taylor grand pacific 717 builders addition honey burst, love it. I also have a 00017 Martin , a Triumph Cole Clark 37/50, a Lorrivee and an old Seagull that I love. Great Videos BTW. Don’t know if you remember me, I played percussion with the DeGrazia band, a duo with Oscar Fuentes with Reno DelMar and The Muffeletta band.

Maybe I’m biased because I have a D1T SB, but the mids on the D2AT don’t ring out like the D1. They seem to overshadowed by the bass. Just my opinion. Obviously they’re both great.

Collings D1 Traditional is awesome...very similar dry tone to a pre war D18 Martin

I think that you are reacting to how each guitar feels and sounds as you play. I think we all to that. Great guitars...

100% correct. Guitars respond in such a way that sort of takes the player along the ride.

Hi Gary! Rick, over in Marana.... just barely... Gosh, they both sound wonderful. I think the D2 was more articulate? A little brighter? I think the D1 was a bit louder? I don't know.... I'd love to have either one.. I would choose the D2HAT... I do favor rosewood over mahogany. Was that "You and Tequila? A little Harvest Moon? Beautiful! You could make any guitar sound great! (-:

Thanks for making this video. Very helpful! I have a D2hAT (love it!) but I have been very curious about the sound of a D1AT (finally ordered one). Short summary: love this D2hAT. I am hearing high levels of overtones and sustain, plenty of clarity, and impressive woody warmth when the string attack is right. Also love the D1T. The difference in body tone is obvious of course, and the Sitka top sounds very good especially with a softer attack. However, this video confirms for me that given my play style, the extra $ for the Adi top will worth it on the D1T. I expect I can find nearly all of the character I love in Sitka tops from an Adi by dialing in my string attack, but I'm not confident I can find what I love about Adi tops (bell like clarity) from a Sikta top combined with a mahogany body. Not hearing it so much here, especially with a more forceful pick attack. That said, if you are looking for a warm dry tone (dry, meaning less of the reverb overtones and more pure fundamentals) and you play with a lighter touch, then the Sitka may a great way to go. I hear that here in the D1T. BTW, moving the mic closer: great move. Really helped. It seems people generally think loud and powerful with dreads, but I think dreads are wonderful for a softer, solo fingerstyle if you have the right guitar. Collings Traditional line models really work well for me.

Hey mythos, this, thanks for stopping by. Are you on AGF also? I was afraid the Adi top (for me) might add too many overtones. When I play amplified the drier sound works better and feeds back less in my experience. However, if my local shop would have had one I would have tried it. I really wanted to try a baked Sitka top. But none were around and I loved this D1T enough to pull the trigger.

Guitars sound amazing.I like the Mahogany. I have a love/ hate thing with adirondack. On the one hand it really articulates, but I alway find theres an underlying stiffness to it. Rosewood and sitka. That would be interesting! Great demo.

For me I would chose the the rosewood if I already have a hog in my stable.

@@gair1944 Ok that might be a problem ;) I know that collings make some great guitars, but you already have two great martin 18 style dreads which I think are better suited for playing modern stuff and folk pop etc. rather the collings maybe tend to be more popular in bluegrass situations? sure all great guitars & theres a lot great boutique builders around us today.

Just picked up the Collings D1 Traditional. Love it! I Wanted to evaluate the D2HAT in contrast to decide which is best for me. I’m sticking with the mahogany/ Sitka D1 Traditional.

@@gair1944 I am a huge fan of the D1 platform. I have a D3 (a souped up D2h) but I prefer the note separation of the D1 and the tighter bass. That said they are both fantastic
@gair1944

@@Iam1DK a close friend has an older D3 and it is breathtaking. I agree about the note separation and tighter bass on the Mahogany D1 Traditional. I also know that works particularly well amplified and in a mix. I've tried to make peace with a Rosewood guitar for years and years but I always feel at home on a Mahogany instrument.

@@gair1944 agree I want to love the D3 but I am drawn to the D1 and D1AT every time I play acoustic. By the way, I can’t stop playing my collings 290 with throbak 52/54s P90s… I love the tones. My current favorite.

@@Iam1DK that’s awesome about the 290. Those Throbak P90’s are sooo very good. Do you amplify your Collings? I’m gonna need a Pickup and choices are limited since it has the long cut through saddle.

@@billdedrick1914 Hey Bill, Not on the Collings yet but I bought the Sunburst Collings D1 Traditional. It will be getting a fresh set of XS strings next week when I have the new LR Baggs HiFi Pick up installed. I've been using XS strings on my Martins and I love them. My new favorite string. @@gair1944 Gary is the XS tone very similar to the EJ17? How about volume and bass? Quite similar to EJ17? I konw the XS life is 3-4 X that of say EJ17.
@gair1944
@gair1944 Жыл бұрын
@@billdedrick1914 I have not really compared directly. The volume and bass is excellent. Maybe a little warmer than EJ17's which is great for me. I always enjoy EJ17's after they have a few hours of playing time. XS sound great straight away from the time you tune up. EJ 17's have been my mainstay/primary string of choice. The XS for now are replacing them and I don't see that changing. That should tell you plenty. (one mans opinion of course)
