This video shares why I believe that The Color Purple 2023 Movie was a flop. The Color Purple documents the traumas and gradual triumph of Celie, an African American teenager raised in rural isolation in Georgia, as she comes to resist the paralyzing self-concept forced on her by others. Celie narrates her life through painfully honest letters to God.

Warner Bros is 45 million dollars in debt-This movie with black cast was not good enough. The studio has a disconnect with the black community. Taraji was insulted by the original salary offer. Remake of the Color Purple was not a good idea. The advertising and marketing for the remake were disrespectful in 2023-2024. Warner Brothers is simply out of touch in the United States. Black people in America will not waste money on a bad movie with a black cast. We are tired of the focus on slavery and the early 1900s. It is time to do more progressive movies of black excellence.

Troubling factors for the Color Purple 2023: 1) Timing. Because of the recent Screen Actors Guild strike, the issue of pay inequality and mistreatment of actors made the public very hesitant to support the film and 2) whose not so bright idea was it to market this domestic violence struggle drama as a holiday movie? 3) Colorism. The 2023 Color Purple took the 2 characters who were the most feminine/desirable in the community, Shug and Nettie, and made them lighter-skinned which they were not int he 1985 version. The optics of this was a slight to dark skinned women, who have fewer opportunities to shine is Hollywood as it is. 4) Black men are tired of being portrayed as monsters and abusers. 5) Oprah's ally Tyler Perry has been in hiding of late due to recent backlashes for telling Black women to date down, and allegations from actor Christian Keyes, so he couldn't promote it to his audience. 6) The LGBTQ themes made it uncomfortable to some, even Lil Boosie walked out on it with his son and this aspect of the film gave it less of a family friendly image. 7) the music wasn't pushed as a selling point

2023 The Color Purple is failing at the box office for 5 reasons (none of which are Taraji P. Henson); 1, the Pandemic changed American movie viewing habits to waiting for theatrical released films to become available on streaming services in a couple months, 2 The movie was released during a bad economy with a movie aimed at the audience most impacted by the economy, 3 In general black audiences in recent years (especially since 2017 Marvel Black Panther) resist historical time period movies like 2023 The Color Purple, Woman King, Harriet, and Twelve Years a Slave, 4 This was a musical like Spielberg’s “West Side Story” two years ago an "In The Heights" which both flopped. 5 This was a retelling of an almost perfect movie classic.

The economy has nothing to do with it considering movies like Barbie, Mario Brothers, Oppenheimer made Billions in 2023.. Even the horrible Fast X made over $700 million at the box office. Beyonce and Taylor Swift sold tickets to their concerts and concert movies.. People go out to sporting events and eat at restaurants.. Vegas is booked and busy.. So, lets not blame it on people not having any money.. The movie has no box office stars in the cast. Taraji P. Henson has proven in the past that she can't sell a movie to save her life, shes have several movies in which she was the lead actress and all the movie failed at the box office except for 'No Good Deeds' which was made for $18 million and went on to earn $32 million at the domestic box office.. The movie failed because the musical play hasn't been popular in pop culture since the early 2000s. Had this movie come out in say 2009 or 2012, it might had been successful.. Why wait 18 years to make the movie?? The target demographics for the movie is over age 30. I don't see teens and those 18 to 25 going to see this movie.. Also, the movie isn't being marketed to White people. This movie needs to get Whites and Latinos into theaters in order to be successful... Anyways, the movie has earned $60 million so far in less than 3 weeks and it still hasn't opened in the UK, Brasil, Australia, France and Germany.. Outside of Disney, very few if any recent musicals have been successful..

@@user-kg8gt1jz8n Don't pick on Oprah, she actually fixed all the negative issues on the set within 24 hours.. Also, if this version of The Color Purple is so depressing, what do you consider the 1985 version to be? Also, its not a slave movie.. So, you rather see fantasy and unreal movies like Black Panther? Maybe you consider movies depicting Blacks as drug dealers, drug addicts, murders, rapists to be uplifting?? Because most movies and streaming shows seem to be depicting Black characters as drug dealers (Ghost, God Father of Harlem, P Valley, Black Family Mafia, Empire). Y'all love watching such shows but won't support a Black film that shows Black characters being positive role models?? Taraji's crying and complaining hasn't helped the movie.. I think the movie would have still underperformed without Taraji crying..

IMO, the current The Color Purple movie was mainly about an ego trip for Oprah. There was already a classic movie AND a broadway show of the movie. I take nothing away from the actors. Their talented contributions to the movie was epic. Getting Black movies made can already be a challenge, so there is absolutely no doubt to me that had the cast been treated like the talented Black stars they are from the very beginning, the cast would NEVER have spoken up about the injustices they experienced on set. This is what has become classic Oprah dipping into her “massa” side, a side many have viewed in her that Blacks can spot a mile away. If Steven Spielberg, Tyler Perry, or anyone else heading this movie had shortchanged their cast, Oprah should have taken the lead. The cast knew to contact her. Yes, according to Oprah and the cast stating that when they brought their concerns up to Oprah she addressed them…the issue is the cast shouldn’t have had to do so. Movie trailers and a Kraft catering is as common and necessary as toilets and running water. Hearing about these concerns, I believe may have had something to do with the low viewer turnout. There was already a slight toxicity attached to the movie.

I had 1 major problem with this film.....It went from Mister being evil in 1985 and ripping Celie & Nettie apart to literally being the devil in 2023 and attempting to grape his 13 year old sister-in-law in her sleep & then shooting at her after throwing her out at night in the midst of a rain storm.

@@StayTunedReviews Exactly, in my opinion Colman Domingo [ the man that plays mister] wasn't on the same level as Danny Glover. It bothered me that I actually pittied this man that was sleeping in his field after hating him just an hr. ago for being a vial human being. I've seen the movie twice. I liked it. My first watch was really enjoying the music, choreography, and storytelling. The second watch allowed me to pay more attention to the storyline and the little intricacies I didn't catch in the first go-round. With that being said. I think if it is considered to be a failure due to numbers, that is because today's younger generation isn't connected to the film as those 45 and older. The target movie-going audience of 18-34 is not going to pack theaters for a film like this. I also don't know why people didn't catch that the film was going to be a musical, it seemed to me that was clear. In the end, if you are a fan of the original, this version does not replace it. Fans of the original will notice how the narrative had to be fast-tracked for this release and that in some ways took away. Also, some of the lines in the first are so iconic in the culture, that redoing them with some updated language seemed a little mimicry. I think with the overseas release it may make its budget back, and also once it gets to streaming it may get a second life as well. BAPS was the same way, it didn't do well in theaters but now has an existence just in the culture.

This is just my reasons. But when I first heard the news of this movie being remake I wasn’t happy at all. Plus the movie itself didn’t make it better. Personally for myself I have no interest of watching another film focusing on black woman struggling or any degrading images of African American/ black Americans like toxic black love or black trauma for that matter. I just saying being a black American women born in generation of gen z myself is tired of struggling narratives. I rather prefer something different and doesn’t send out messages that struggling is mandatory in order to receive happiness or be at peace within your life. I understand that most of our parents and grandparents grew up with that type of lifestyle and teachings from previous their from their own families from previous generations. But this generation I notice a-lot of change in what these people want toward their future, careers, and partners compare to their family decisions.

If they knew Taraji and the other actresses were going to speak up about the conditions and pay, they probably didn’t want to shine more light on it tbh. So sad because they will try to use the box office numbers to say this is why Black actors aren’t paid but the production company and marketing set them up to fail.

People had an issue with “In The Heights” because the casting didn’t represent Dominicans in NY. They’re a wide range of colors and the focus was on Wyt Dominicans. There was lots of talk about that. Covid didn’t help but that wasn’t the main issue. The film had one token BM. They managed to go the whole film/musical and never show his family. At the very least his family story could have been incorporated. Just like they did for the main female character.

Indeed there was some controversy with colorism in the movie, but the movie was watched on nearly 700k households on HBO Max during its first week. That translates to about $8.4 million in ticket sales for that week alone. And there a ton of people of color who've done reaction videos to In the Heights and never mentioned their issue with colorism. So while I don't deny that colorism may have played a part in the low ticket sales, I also believe that COVID made more folks wanna watch movies at home vs going out in 2020-2022. It's a flop because we have been there and done that when it comes to The Color Purple. It was a book. It was a film. It was a play. It was a film again. It's a classic that did not need to be remade. When it was released the first time it was coming off a best selling book and we had not seen many all black cast movies. It was fresh at the time but now we have more and more black shows and films with a black cast that reflects the modern issues facing black folks. In my opinion, In The Heights would have done the same box office had it not been a pandemic because it appeals to a limited audience. It also received criticism because it left out black Latinos. That hurt that films appeal to the American public. Since we're on remakes, West Side Story is a classic film but that remake flopped as well because it doesn't appeal to today's audience.

Part of the problem is that there are not effective Producers anymore. One of the qualities of a good Producer is one who controls costs and is focused on efficient production. There are many extravagances and wasted money that happens in the process. The other problem is that no one knows how to make Musicals anymore. The Directors and Cinematagraphers don't seem to know how to stage, block, and photograph dance and musical numbers. The essence of dance on film is seeing the entire body, as you would on stage. For some illogical reason, Musicals in recent years shoot dances in Medium and Close-ups as if to disguise poor dancing. The only recent one that was handled competently, and a remake as well is WEST SIDE STORY.

Great analysis! I enjoyed the movie well enough but didn’t love it. I agreed with you that it wasn’t advertised as a musical, but even if it had been, I'm not sure it would have made a difference. Just because something is a hit on Broadway doesn’t mean people will flock to see it on the big screen. Cats, Dear Even Hansen, In The Hights and West Side Story proved that. Also, they overestimated the wide appeal of this story. After all the Black women and gay men (me) saw it on Christmas day, few others were interested, despite the good reviews. Rape, incest, and DV mixed with singing and dancing is a tough sell no matter how you spin it.

For some reason black folk are not into musicals. I asked many of my friends if they were going to see it and most said, they don't like musicals. On the flip side, if there is a strong church theme, it will play better in the community. But the real problem with The Color Purple is not the black audience, but is with white folk. They are not going to see it. We did our part to the tune of 60 mil, when the crowd was 70% black, and 15% other. White folk made Black Panther a mega success. So the question should be, why aren't white folk going to see this movie? Could it have something to do with current race climate in America?

I see a number of folks saying they don't like musicals but a number of people do like biopics that feature musicians and those movies/TV series have dozens of songs in it (The Temptations, Straight Outta Compton, Selena, Get on Up, ect). So do you think the issue is more so with unknown songs by fictional characters being sung in these musical movies or some folks just not like singing and dancing in movies period?

The Marketing... 👎👎. Watching the 2023 trailer, I was like this looks way too polished. It’s lacking the grit, authenticity & believability that made the 1985 version so powerful. Thing is, it’s NOT a remake of the 1985 version, but the 2023 trailer makes you think it is. So, when it comes to an initial impression, comparisons to the 1985 version is unavoidable.

Harvey Weinstein backed every BLACK TV SHOW AND MOVIE BEFORE HE WENT TO JAIL, does Oprah NOW THINK THAT SHE WILL TAKE HIS PLACE, starting with this piece of crap Color Purple???? Oprah is IRRELEVANT AND UNPOPULAR. So she decided to remake this shi* to put herself back on the map. I DON'T THINK SO!! SHE IS EVEN MORE HATED SEEING AS SHE TREATED THE CAST WITH TOTAL DISRESPECT!!! It was totally unnecessary and should have been expected to be a flop. You don’t need to remake a classic and a totally reconstruction of the original as a musical.
