Nice channel cat! Great job! I know the folks from the south don’t understand only having channel cats to fish for, but living in WA state I can relate.. Thanks for sharing, Tight lines!

I remember back in the 90’s watching the fellas from In-fisherman going up and fishing the Red for big channels, just about all the guys from there have did that at one time or another! Always wanted to do that myself, never could afford it. But at least I can watch guys do it! I don’t know what it is that makes the Red grow big channels, I seen them catch fish in the upper twenties to mid thirty lb range.

The theory behind the size structure has to do with our colder winter climate, slow growth rate, and lack of predation from other species of catfish. Many of the fish in the river system tend to live a very very long time. That type of extended healthy grow rate tends to lead to massive fish. Many of these 20+ pound catfish could very well be upwards of 30 years old. Recently a Freshwater Drum study was completed on the Red to determine ages. Incredibly, some of the fish came back nearly 80 years old! In addition North Dakota implemented a Slot limit for 1 catfish over 24” and 5 total per day. All together makes a trophy fishery

Just went channel catfishing on the red river today and the wild rice, caught some nice ones. You been able to catch any walleyes this spring? I haven’t been able to keep them off the hook. Caught a 13” Walter on a size 7 circle hook and cut bait lol
@TheRiverAddictАй бұрын
My next video from today’s trip will actually have quite a bit of Walters in it. I was hammering them on cutbait today as well
