I have always regarded the U.S.S. Flagg as a work of art, and the stuff childhood dreams are made of. The arcade games in the quarters are a nice touch! Pure 1980s goodness there. I'm 45 now and I still wish I could have had something like that as a kid in the 80s. Having been born and raised in Germany, I could only dream of toys like that. For one, obviously "militaristic" toys were forbidden, but also was stuff just way more expensive in Germany than it was in the USA, for whatever reason. For example, I was shocked to learn as an adult that the "Castle Greyskull" playset from the "Masters of the Universe" toy line apparently cost 25 US Dollars in the States, while it cost something like 150 Deutschmarks (which back then were about 75 to 80 Dollars) in Germany, so 3 times as much. A play set of the size and seeming quality of this aircraft carrier here would probably have cost near 1000 Deutschlmarks / 500 Dollars in Germany back then, if it would have been sold there. I was always so flabbergasted and envious when I saw American kid's rooms in movies like "E.T.", "Poltergeist" or "The Goonies" filled to the ceiling with hundreds of action figures, toy planes and other such stuff, while I, despite being from a middle class family, could only afford a few of those things. I had a Castle Greyskull set, maybe 2 dozen action figures and 3 or 4 vehicles and that was a lot by German standards of the time. My parents really splurged when they got me Greyskull, a "Wind Rider" and my first 4 Masters of the Universe action figures for Christmas in ..... I think it must have been 1983 or so.

I always find it interesting how different cultures had different rules. I was raised to appreciate everything we got as we were not “well off’ or rich. I’m glad you shared your story and liked the video !
@TrangleC Жыл бұрын
@@woodman29 Yeah, I suppose I come across as unappreciative, but I'm just talking about wishes and desires I had as a kid. When I say my family was middle class, that is probably bad communication on my part, because it will conjure images of modest wealth to an American reading it, which would not be correct in regards to what a German would call middle class. By American standards we probably were dirt poor. My parents had decent jobs (he was a tool maker and she was a accountant) but living standards have always been considerably lower in Germany than they were in the USA. The average German worker makes about 2/3 (66%) of what a American doing the same job makes, pays way more taxes and pays a lot more for necessities like gasoline and housing. I never got into this Comic Book Super Hero trend that swept international pop culture for the last 15 years or so, because I never was a comic book kid in my childhood. I just couldn't afford them. The average comic book back then cost about 5 to 8 Deutschmarks. My weekly allowance was 2 Deutschmakrs (1 US Dollar). Even as a kid I realized that the 5 to 10 minutes of reading enjoyment I would get out of a comic book was not worth blowing all my allowance for 2 to 4 weeks for, hehe. Most of my childhood was climbing around in castle ruins, fencing other kids with tree branches and sticks, or running around the woods throwing pine cones at each other. Sorry for boring you with this. I just wanted to point out that I'm not coming at this from a greedy rich kid perspective, at least I don't think so.

Heya Woodman 29. Great video! Might you have the schematics / dimensions for building the custom base? I am planning to do one over the holidays! Please and thank you.
@woodman29 Жыл бұрын
Hi JEFFREY. I unfortunately don’t have any measurements/schematics. I had to set up the FLAGG on a large blank paper then trace out all the footprints (trusses, bow, stern and shape of ship) that way the base matched perfectly. It is a pain setting it up and taking it apart to accomplish this but absolutely worth it! Good luck and Happy Holidays!
@jeffreyenright3857 Жыл бұрын
@@woodman29 Thank you very much for your reply. So did you do it in 2 separate tracings? Like the deck first when flat on the ground then add the trusses, bow, stern, and shape?
@woodman29 Жыл бұрын
@@jeffreyenright3857 negative I traced the deck all in one. I rigged a long pencil to a dowel. The deck doesn’t have to be perfect especially if you going to round off the edges of ur custom base!

I remain astonished that some madlad hasn't taken out his tape measure, modern power tools and maybe a 3d Printer and built himself a 1/12 Scale GI Joe Classified USS Flag. I mean just from looking at it it's really not that hard of a Modeling Project. With a CNC Lathe or Lasercutter you could probably even bang it out in kit form. And for those wondering what to do for Planes? Those 2 larger ships from the Lightyear movie paint up into excellent 1/12 Joe aircraft. Plus there's always the 2 seater GI Joe Snowspeeder.
