Four and a half months of rendering later... Maths Town presents "The Colour of Infinity" our most complex Mandelbrot fractal zoom to date! We pass into the crack of a mini-brot on the real-number line and emerge into a land of bright colour and beautiful shapes. Be sure to leave a comment with your favourite locations. Please hit subscribe and enjoy your journey!
I've gone for a soft house music mixed tape, but if it is not your thing, be sure to play your own music in the background.
Some features:
11:45 - Entering the infinite colour well (the iteration count going crazy here).
17:49 - Note the unusual shapes and spirals
29:08 - Colour wells leading to a gateway
1:14:03 - Entering infinite colour zone (Thumbnail in here!).
1:18:30 - Line of colour wells.
2:04:18 - 8 balls
120,000,000 iterations at a depth of 1e1642 takes a long time to render! The final frame of this video took a whole week to render!
(Note: Some other projects were rendered at the same time).

Amazing that you zoomed so deep into such a difficult location (such as the crack of a minibrot). I also find it interesting that you zoomed into the crevice of a minibrot a little further down the needle than the largest minibrot, which everyone else goes for, though I guess you did this to make sure that the julia sets were spaced out far enough apart to make it more visually appealing.

Did you know that since this zoom zooms at constant speed, you can calculate the zoom depth of any frame by calculating the zoom speed (by dividing 1642 by the number of seconds the zoom takes, starting at 0:03 and ending at 2:16:25), then multiplying the zoom speed by the number of seconds you are into the video minus three (since the zooming starts three seconds in).

A lot of shapes I haven't seen before are in this one. The Mandelbrot set never ceases to amaze. I'm not a big fan of all the black gradients. Blacks paired with most other colors seems garish to me. Although I know it is good for highlighting shapes. I wonder if the formula could be tweaked to only leave step changes to black? Black does look good with the night sky colors though (star white blue and purple).

so like, there is another mandelbrot when the vid stops. could you zoom into that thing as long as the other one too? or what happens if you zoom into those circles, or the void of the mandelbrot?
@zfloyd1627
@zfloyd1627 4 жыл бұрын
I can answer your questions. 1. No, he cannot zoom further into the final minibrot. This zoom took 100 million iterations to render, so if he zoomed into the minibrot, it would take trillions, maybe even quadrillions, of iterations to render, which is more than current technology can handle. 2. If you zoomed onto the edges of those circles, and found a feature to zoom into the center of, you would find simmilar concentric circles, until the circles split into two sets of concentric circles. (In other words, it looks like boobs).When this happens depends on how close you were to the minibrot. And if you zoomed into the center of one of those sets of concentric circles, you will only find that the circles split again. If you zoomed relatively close to the minibrot, you may see the circles split twice in one frame, and if you zoomed right next to the minibrot, you would see an embedded julia set. 3. If you zoomed into the void of the minibrot, you would see nothing but black. Period. P.S. the final frame of this zoom took a WEEK to render on a processor that is probably very fast, so if you want to explore the edges of those concentric circles, don't even bother. Especially if you have an average processor.
@zfloyd1627

Also, at 6:38, the minibrot makes it look like you used a really low iteration count, even though a zoom such as this one requires a very high iteration count. Did you change the iteration count throughout the video?

Might be a dumb question, but why is it that the last part of every really deep Mandelbrot zoom seems to run out of wild/interesting shapes, and just becomes a descent into a bullseye-like tunnel of ever-thinner circular bands that eventually ends at a minibrot?

No, it is a very interesting question, I think it is one of the most fascinating parts of the Mandelbrot. I deliberately end all (well most) of the videos on a minibort, it is a kind of a silly tradition. All minibrots are actually surrounded by a history of the zoom. From about the 1/2 way point of the video you actually see a replay of the entire 1st half but with 2-way symmetry, but using 1/2 the space. This is followed by a replay at 4-way symmetry using 1/4 of the space. Near the mini-brot the symmetry gets so high, and the spacing so dense that it looks like circles. Eventually this process collapses towards infinite symmetry, and a minibrot is found. You will see this on every Mandelbrot video (of 2nd power) that ends at a minibrot.

Woah. Mind blown (*boom*). Can you pinpoint exactly where on this video it switches to the 2-way symmetry?

@@TouchingClothProd its probably near 1:07:30 - 1:08:30 where you see similar circular shapes and then zoom point seem to shift offcenter

@@MathsTown watching the symmetry go to infinity is why most mandelbrot zoom videos end in a minibrot. Without that final minibrot, the zoom would feel incomplete. Therefore, it is not a silly tradition.
