The comeback story of last year was definitely Sale. Literally no one had him having the best season of his career and running away with the Cy Young. It would probably help Trevor Story's chances if they trade him to the Braves and agree to pay most of his salary like they did with Sale.

@stevedegnan4962 I did read and hear some fans expecting a bounce back and maybe even comeback player if the year. I can't find anyone who thought Sale would be *that* good though. From what I can find no one even had him in the pre-season conversation for Cy Young award and much less running away from it. MLB actually had him as better than the AL Cy Young award winner so most people agree that he wasn't just the best pitcher in the National League but the best pitcher in all of baseball. Even compared to the most bullish predictions Sale ended up outperforming everyone's expectations by far. I figured if Sale stayed healthy his ceiling would be somewhere in the area of an ERA in the high 2.00's or just below 3.00. I think the Braves would have been ecstatic with that kind of performance. Posting an ERA in the 1.00's while having the best season of his career and being the best pitcher in all of baseball wasn't on anyone's radar that I know of. Most people thought he wouldn't even be the best pitcher in his team much less the best pitcher in the game. The Braves name I kept hearing was Spencer Strider winning the Cy Young. Imagine losing the Cy Young favorite for the season and then still winning the Cy Young. That's gotta be rare. Thanks to Sale the Braves were able to do that. Now they will have both of them next season. Pretty scary.

I'm not a Boston fan but when my team trades someone with any semblance of promise we always think, "Watch this guy go out and be a superstar as soon as we let him go." In fact, believe it or not, I talked to Braves fans who said something similar about Vaughn Grissom in the exact same trade for Sale. They said, "Watch this overpaid pitcher get injured and be a bust like he has been for years while Vaughn Grissom becomes one of the best hitting middle infielders in baseball on a cheap salary for 5 years." Sort of like a prediction of a "just our luck" kind of thing. Believe it or not most people had Vaughn Grissom ranked ahead of Michael Harris II when they were called up because Grissom's bat was considered so superior to Harris. So a lot of Braves fans believed they were giving up 6+ dirt cheap years of control of a rookie of the year type player (who does it mostly with the bat which fans definitely love offense more than defense) for an older, severely injury prone player who was much more expensive and only had 2 or 3 years of control left. So I could definitely see Boston fans saying that just like Braves fans said the same about Grissom. That's how you can tell a true fan. A true fan always expects the worst but roots for the best. I would say overall though that the fans of the other 28 teams and the unbiased writers generally didn't predict a Cy Sale season though. I don't think anyone expected Grissom to have such a terrible first year with Boston either. That guy looked like a lock to hit very well overall with 20+ homers a year. Who knew Sale would stay healthy while both Grissom and Giolito couldn't stay on the field? I mean that rhetorically but seriously no writers or non-Boston/Atlanta fans would've guessed that. Great point on your comment though. It's crazy how right and/or wrong some people can be and how players can disprove expectations.

I was at the Angels game when that happened to story, it was like dodger stadium when Ohtani got hurt in game 2. Angel stadium felt silent for a minute, especially surprising for a road player too. Hope he bounces back soon, prime story was really a sight to see

My only issue with Story's shoulder injury is that it was from a stupid decision on a hit he had no play on anyway. No out to get and no run to prevent. It was so pointless to dive for that, and it cost the team a lot more than a game. Don't remember if they won or lost that game, but the point is having him miss nearly a full season makes a difference in the team's season. I like his hustle, but he needs to be smarter.

When you make plays like Story you are going to go full effort no matter what. That is how you get those incredible plays that look impossible. Not saying that would have been one there, but you don't field at Story's level by half assing when you feel like it won't matter.
