@@jamesmartin5370 Hi James, nice to talk with you this afternoon. We have decided to try to restore this watch. It belonged to my grandfather. It's going to require more effort than I was originally prepared for, but would really be sorry to have it just put in a parts bin or otherwise discarded. After watching many videos of James's restorations, I am confident if it can be saved, James can do it.

Thank you for sharing, James. Very cool looking watch, with some very special needs. Love the exposed balance wheel. I hope you get to bring it back to life.

Thanks David, Yes, both owner and I want this one to keep time again. Butchered balance wheel is a tough labor intensive issue to get past at the moment along with the other defects.

Interesting movement, various companies built using original patent from the late 1880s up to the 1970s.

Wow, I don't know what you'd have to do with that balance. Seems like it's almost a loss, as is the mainspring. I can't ever imagine patching a mainspring in that way. Just seems like when they break, you're better off either simply shortening them and getting six days out of the eight day spring, or just replacing it altogether.
@jamesmartin53704 күн бұрын
I agree, Balance could be fixed if someone wanted to devote many hours to it, owner decided to not to move forward with a restoration.

Original patent, granted on January 10, 1889, as companies folded other companies purchased the patent and continued producing them. This one was made by Wyss Frères who produced it from about 1910 to 1920. Others continued to purchase the patent and produce them up to the 1970s.

Any idea what year this pocket watch is from? Will be interesting to see how you tackle that butchered balance wheel.
@jamesmartin53704 күн бұрын
The maker of this watch produced them from about 1910 to 1920. The Swiss patent for the design was patented some time in the 1880s, multiple companies purchased the patent at different times, seems there was always a company around who wanted to make them, so the watch design was made almost unaltered by different companies up to the 1970s.

@@jamesmartin5370 Too bad the customer is not gonna move forward. Was looking forward to watching you correct that butchered balance wheel - my guess is you would of had to replace it.
@mercuriall28105 күн бұрын
Wow! That mainspring ‘repair’ and butchery of the balance wheel are both egregiously bad workmanship.
