The writer of this Hymn Rev. F. Bottome, D.D. was born in Derbyshire, England, May 26, 1823.
In 1850, having migrated to America, he entered the ministry of the Methodist Episcopalian Church. This Hymn was widely sung in the 20th Century in pentecostal churches because of its reference to "The Comforter” - the Holy Spirit which is a fundamental doctrine of the Pentecostal Church.
It was published in the Redemption Hymnal #227 and sung in this rendition by Fred and Betty Evans retired missionaries to Papua New Guinea and ministers of the Assemblies of God.
