It’s funny how we are seemingly still in the Modern Age that began in the 80’s which would make Modern Age about 40 years long where Silver and Golden Age were both less than 20 years. And it’s not like there haven’t been many big and notable developments that could be viewed as turning points since the 80’s. Personally I like the idea that Dark Age was from the mid 80’s to late 90’s and the age(s) after that is(are) Cinematic Age and/or Diverse Age. Though that has it’s own problems because the perceived darkness lasted from mid 80’s to only about mid 90’s but the movies started to make waves only in the 00’s. But if you view Blade as the starting point of Cinematic Age instead of X-Men or Spider-Man then I think it could fit. But should the Cinematic Age be the period of the beginning of comic book movie boom from late 90’s/early 00’s to early 10’s with the solidification of MCU with 2012’s Avengers or the era from the beginning of MCU in the late 00’s to it’s peak in the late 10’s? Maybe we should have a longer age here (from late 90’s Blade to late 10’s Endgame) with Cinematic Age being divided into Early Cinematic Age and Late Cinematic Age. Of course that would exclude the Diverse Age which would be the 10’s mostly. But in either case it feels like we are in the end of one era and the beginning of another one here with MCU’s (and superhero movies’ in general) seemingly decreasing success and the slow down of the biggest push for diversity when it comes to comics. I think we are (hopefully) finally getting over the worst arguments of pro and anti diversity crowds and getting into a more stable middle where we can have more diverse characters without it being such a huge deal or without those new diverse characters being created to push the more classic characters out of the spotlight or them feeling like such cynical attempts to just get attention and free promotion on the part of the publishers. I think people are finally starting to grow tired of this dumb argument because pbviously representation matters and diversity is good but just having diverse characters for the sake of diversity isn’t enough. Those diverse characters also need and deserve good stories to be able to become successful and last beyond their initial debut. So I think we are slowly starting to get there but obviously these changes in eras can’t be defined while we are in those eras. That comes much later when we have truly left these eras behind and are far enough removed from them. But it’s still fun to theorize and analyze and to wonder how future will view these times.

Jim Shooter is why the stupid ideas implemented today were vetoed in the late 70s and early 80s. The best directive he gave was insisting that Dark Phoenix/Jean Grey be killed off. Claremont and Byrne had Dark Phoenix destroy a solar system full of creatures as an afterthought. Then then expected to write a redemption arc but Jim said she had to go.

IPs outlived their comics ... that needs to be qualified. The comics outlasted the initial popularity of Transformers, '80s GI Joe, etc. The comics continued far past the point of those toylines dying. Some of those toy lines were later relaunched ... some of them several times ... and some IPs eventually rode nostalgia into add'l forms of media (movies movies movies). But some of those '80s comics long outlasted the lifespans of the 80s toy lines, by *years*!

18:39: Incredibly, Heavy Metal Magazine is not listed in the Overstreet Guide, which in my mind hurts their credibility somewhat. Will they argue it's a "magazine"? No. Creepy and Vampirella are in there. Will they argue it's too "adult"? A better arguement, but most seems tastefully done (As opposed to the Heavy Wood running feces, put out by the same). Will they argue that it has "articles". Seems a week arguement. This is a sticking point for me.

Filmwise - MCU, in particular - the "law of averages" is pretty much like still waters; random samples repeating over and over again, with nothing left to see other than what you've already seen. Studios and their huge budgets look for predictability, so that's what they produce. In such a landscape, some titles like Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers are easier to translate to movies than, say, Fantastic Four, whose stories involved more internal strife within the family and story arcs building out of character development. The less complex the backstory, the easier it fits into the MCU template. Which is why, imo, 90% of those movies suck.

@@keonscinist2333 Thanks for your reply Keon. I can't really remember this video well. Anyway what does both sides mean? Are there only 2 sides? Are all side equal based on evidence or relevance? As far as I remember this video's content, do stories around the of social issues of a time or the inclusion of all gender, ethnic, sexual groups count as an age? Also if your wrong negative bias against this inclusion becomes the centre of a video essay about comic book ages then it's a 'biased diatribe'. Stay well keon.

34:19: COMIC BOOKS SHOULD NOT be a engine for displaying alternative sexual attitudes, other than to hint or aknowledge their existance. Since 90% of the population is heterosexual as is required for actual existance, something just less that figure would find it repungnant as superhero material, and even clser to 90% when thinking of thier children having access to it. Therefor, in a society that accepts "to each thier own" better than most, it seems classifing such comics as Mature, right on the cover is the best way to keep explicit non-hetero material away from minds we don't want twisted, just yet.
@TechnicolorGhosts
@TechnicolorGhosts 11 ай бұрын
I know this is an old comment, but insane that people like you are still using "won't you think of the children?!!?" excuse in regards to justifying their homopobia. Gay people exist and said existence is not explicit anymore than a hetero one is. Treating it as otherwise is highly regressive.
@lilycaraway2751
@lilycaraway2751 7 ай бұрын
Really dude? Saying someone who’s gay or anything other than absolutely heterosexual is “displaying alternative sexual attitudes” is ridiculous. Are black people “displaying alternative racial attitudes?” No, because ethnicity isn’t a choice and neither is one’s sexual orientation and/or gender identity, and your insinuation that it’s purely preferential is dim witted at best and intentionally harmful at worst. I can’t even begin to unpack the “BUT WHAT ABOUT THE CHILDREN?!” nonsense you’re laying down in that same breath either. You can have straight parents and still turn out like shit or have gay parents and not end up being part of an evil cabal. If all the straight parents were perfect there wouldn’t be any kids from broken homes for the gay couples to adopt in the first place now would there?
@carlgibson285
@carlgibson285 5 ай бұрын
I'd argue that constantly showing extreme violence without any repercussions (even death doesn't mean anything in comics thanks to all the various character resurrections) does far more damage to developing minds than anything displaying alternative sexual attitudes.

Wouldn't it be great if Marvel started a comic called "Undead Assemble!"... and, despite the adventure, it continually devolves into discussions about how none of them, even if they want to, can remain dead... and they all get around to agreeing on how, in stories, only pussy writers rely on time-travel plots which only fuck everything up for all time because they are lazy unimaginative morons? @@carlgibson285
