I love how J. H. Williams structures his pages. His Batwoman books are fantastic

Sandman Overture was such a wonderland of a comic book! Who would have thought that we would get something so special all these years after Sandman ended!

Even the scale of Quorian's circular panel is nearly the size of the planet at the top of the page, suggesting not just balance but a comparative breadth of consciousness, almost an awareness of the world and it's place in it. I'd even say that the rectangular, character-focusing panel being 'rooted' to the bottom of the page fits with the dreaming plant imagery and seems to acknowledge a certain connectedness to a wider system of thought. Another great episode. Strip Panel Naked is one of the best channels out there.

Thanks Ryan :) The one thing I didn't talk about (which I will in depth on the patreon a bit more) was the text and it's link, as there's some tie-in with some of the concepts you're saying there as well. You can see why I wanted to look at this page! Lots to talk about! - Hass

I gotta do the patreon thing at some point. I'm at a point where I can afford the interwebs but not quite where I can contribute to the artists I like in a more direct way. Trust me, you're high on the list! Quality content, Hass!

Hey! Great video! What a coincidence, in the last month I have been working in an academic paper about the same subject of Sandman Overture!

Wonderful analysis as always! I absolutely loved this book. I've just picked up Promethea and can't wait to get more from J. H. Williams. What a talent.

Visually, the composition really looks like the opening of 2001. Didn't read Sandman, but it looks like it deals with similar themes. So there might be some symbolic to dig there.

Strip Panel Naked I think you noticed enough. ^^ Your analysis was complete and really well thought out. This detail is just a bonus at this point. So yeah, great work as always ! You gotta stop doing such an amazing job, cause each new video is a new recommandation that I add on my list. I'm running out of money, and the list is becoming way too long !

Max Battistella Haha, thanks for being enthousiastic, but honestly I'm not sure I can dig much further than that considering I didn't read it. ^^ I can still theorize. They probably share symbolics like creation and evolution of life, nativity, the definition of being an intelligent entity, what's being "human" and all that jazz, you know. The opening sequence of 2001 is all about circles. The circle of life, of birth, of evolution. And the circles are superposed, because life comes in many layers. The music underlines that the circles are also disposed in a rythm of steps. Those steps could be seens as the different panels in a page. Many ways to say the same thing differently thanks to the different formats. So I suppose Sandman deals with stuff like that, simply judging by those pages. I might definitly be wrong though.

Good video as always. I am surprised you chose this book for JH Williams instead of his more famous one for panel design, Batwoman (I have yet to read that one actually but the art is amazing). Have you had a chance to read your copy of Kabuki yet? I had asked if you would do a video on that and you said you had it but hadn't read it yet. I finally picked up a copy of it yesterday (my first read of it was from the library), so I'm going to be going through it again, it's one of those wonderfully complex ones that you have to read multiple times to understand it all. If you could do a video on that I would love it, but all your stuff is great, keep up the good work!

Great analysis! How big of a part do you think the writer plays in these storytelling decisions, and how much do you think is come up with by the artists?

Hard to say without the scripts, but having read a bunch, chatted to artists an written a bit myself, the artist bring *so much* to the page that isn't there in the scripts. Looking at Williams' other work, I'd have to assume that a lot of this is him bringing his talent to the page. But we can never be sure (even if we saw the scripts) of where one person's contribution begins and ends. - Hass
