Great detailed accounts of John Ford's war experience. His skills as a director definitely proved invaluable. Very informative episode, TCM. Well done.

Tcm can broadcast China Beach program due to the fact that it is a Warner Bros production. The show was shot cinamatically. e

China Beach was set during the Vietnam War. The theme was through the eyes of the Army Nurses. Some don't like it due to its ant war message. China Beach is a show that resonates with many people.

Another fantastic episode. Compelled me to rewatch The Battle of Midway, and seek out December 7th (in spite of it's apparent racism). Can't wait to find out nrext week if y'all found the Normandy footage

John Wayne had no talent, ok okay I guess his Academy Award for best actor was just given via sympathy via the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences just hadn't it to him LMAO! And by the way, Wayne wanted to serve in WW2 the American Govt decided he could better serve by making patriotic pro American movies during WW2 for the home front's morale. Please get your facts straight... Wayne wasn't my favorite actor but right is right and bs will always be bs.

Correct. He was 34 and had a family dependency deferment because he had three kids I think..

Yet John Wayne , Mr. Gung-ho, dodged the war. That hypocrisy still bothers me

LIE. John acted for the troops just like many other actors did back then for moral of the war campaign. Know the facts before you spout lies. I know you were probably brainwashed by the left liberal DEMONCRATS though.

Lew Ayers was vilified for his pacifist stance. Ayers, who became a war hero as a Medic in the Philippines never regained his career. Wayne, the draft dodger was rewarded due to his personal contacts The Industry never Apologized to Ayres.

Terrific two more clowns that don't know what words mean. If he had in fact "dodged the draft" that would be a crime. If you're interested in facts: Wayne was exempted from service due to his age (34 at the time of Pearl Harbor) and family status (classified as 3-A - family deferment). Wayne repeatedly wrote to John Ford saying he wanted to enlist, on one occasion inquiring whether he could get into Ford's military unit. Wayne did not attempt to prevent his reclassification as 1-A (draft eligible), but Republic Studios was emphatically resistant to losing him, since he was their only A-list actor under contract. Herbert J. Yates, president of Republic, threatened Wayne with a lawsuit if he walked away from his contract, and Republic Pictures intervened in the Selective Service process, requesting Wayne's further deferment. U.S. National Archives records indicate that Wayne, in fact, did make an application to serve in the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), precursor to the modern CIA, but his bid was ultimately unsuccessful.

@@Rubi-ll8ss Oh yeah, like his starring in _Johnny Belinda_ in 1948 where he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor. He was most famous for playing Dr Kildare in the movie franchise until 1942. After the war it's not like he could go back to playing Young Dr Kildare anymore. Just curious what your military career consisted of?
@Rubi-ll8ss7 ай бұрын
Lew Ayers was a genuine War Hero. He and three other medics were awarded for their heroism at Layterel. You are mocking his heroism, Shame on you. So you think his characrisation of Kildare. Is to be mocked So what. Lew was a very intelligent man with deep principles. Wayne was no brainiac. He. Had to be one of most stupid people who worked in Hollywood.

John Wayne is one of the most overrated actors in cinema history. Finally, he had no real talent.

John Ford sure knew HT use him. If you haven't seen Wayne in a Ford western on the big screen, do so.

80 years later we're still talking about John Wayne and watching his movies... that's pretty amazing for an "overrated actor with no real talent" (as you put it).
