The Commando helicopter specialists at the forefront of the battle

The Commando Mobile Air Operations Team (MAOT) is a unit of specialist helicopter operators who are key to linking the forces on the ground with the support they need from the air.
Working as part of the Commando Helicopter Force (CHF), the MAOT is often found at the forefront of the battle, acting as a reconnaissance unit and scouting out suitable sites for helicopters to land.

Remember well being flown around exercise areas in Norway early 80’s by 845/846 NAS with our 105 light guns under slung, in the dark and what seemed like very close mountains all around. Top pilots and certainly proved themselves down south in ‘82, brilliant memories.

Can we just take a moment to appreciate what an excellent aircraft the Merlin is and has been for many years. Exported round the world and ultra reliable. We should be ordering more new Merlins with fewer new Chinooks.

Have you worked on this aircraft, operated with it or know anyone who does ? There's a few massive reasons why the raf offloaded them in favour of Chinooks and why it was the Chinook that was purchased as part of urgent operational requirements

@@mattersabo3117 Setting aside the irrelevance of my personal experience of aircraft worked on and operating with in the forces the point I was making is that the Chinook is excellent at what it does but it cannot do everything. Whereas the Merlin can do everything except lift the weights a Chinook can. Crab Air did not 'offload' them. It was an operational decision by the MoD to make individual services have specific aircraft for training, logistics and cost reasons. Hence: Navy: Merlin and Wildcat HMA2 RAF: Chinooks and Puma* Army: Apache and Wildcat AH1 * We will see who gets the new medium helicopter to replace Puma The reason I made that point about fewer Chinooks and more Merlins was the 14 new Chinooks and project Julius upgrades to HC2 and HC3 will cost £1.4 Bn. The 14 Mk 6 aircraft will bring the Chinook inventory up to a total of 60. All taxpayer money going to the USA. We should have used some (note SOME) to keep Westlands going. Its not like the Navy has enough Merlins with 55 Mk 2 / Mk 4 airframes the early ones now being 25 years old.
