TLDR: the constant drive towards 'more representation' has led us to a place where blatant shallow exploitative tokenism must be respected as authentic or you're a bigot. I've never felt a need to talk about my race or sexuality (despite them containing some non-standard components) because it doesn't matter and I don't need some kind of reveal party to garner attention. I guess I'm not self-centered enough.

When representation is all that matters, someone will make money off it. When someone makes enough money on something, *everyone else will join in.* It's a tale as old as time. Funny that the left seems to have forgotten it. I guess that's what happens when you reject grand narratives.

Personally I've yet to be convinced "non-binary" is even really a thing, considering it's always just summed up as "I'm a man/woman but I don't fit the masculine/feminine stereotype", which is pretty much everyone. Very few people are a 100% masculine man, or a 100% feminine woman, most are somewhere in between, and some even cross over, like feminine men or masculine women, which is ok. It just means you are you, it doesn't mean you are somehow a third gender that only started to be a thing a few years ago. Sex is binary. Gender is binary. Femininity/Masculinity is the spectrum, so I remain unconvinced that non-binary isn't just either people misunderstanding that you can be a feminine man or a masculine woman (or that your femininity/masculinity can vary day by day), or it is used by people who simply have to be some unique, special snowflake to somehow justify their existence.

That's what I've been thinking. Especially when Dev himself said "Gender roles" when talking about gender identity. It really seems like gender identity is just someone being more or less feminine or masculine. Some change how they feel some don't feel either. Which means it's literally a nothing issue. It's just another lifestyle preference. If pronouns wasn't ever part of it, the whole topic in gender wouldn't exist. It would literally just be how masculine or feminine someone feels. At least, that's how I've been seeing it.

Yep. Say you're a woman who likes motorcycles. Then you can do two things: - you can say "I am a woman and I like motorcycles." This reduces the cultural stereotype that women like motorcycles. - or you can say "I like motorcycles, therefore I'm nonbinary." This actually increases the cultural stereotype that women like motorcycles.

Yes, exactly this. It's so frustrating to have these conversations with people where they act like you just need to 'educate' yourself, but there's absolutely nothing that education can do to resolve this inherent fallacy -- the conflation of 'gender' with 'gender norms/roles'. Nobody even _tries_ to resolve it. I have yet to find a person, online or in the real world, who even responds to my statements about this. They have no problem continuing to talk to me when they think I'm a transphobe, but as soon as I say that it seems like they're conflating gender norms with gender itself, they just shut down and say I need to educate myself. It's like they realize they don't have any good answer (because there isn't one), so they act exasperated like I'm just dumb for not understanding something so obvious. Another one I love is the typical way trans explanations start. "So you know how you 'feel' like a man?" Uh, no, I don't. I know that I _am_ a man, but it's not something I feel like. I sometimes feel masculine, but I never _feel_ like a man. Just like how I don't 'feel' like someone with 10 fingers.

Regarding the OP, and comments in this thread, I definitely think nonbinary is an unnecessary category. As a gay man, I've always preferred the terms butch, femme and andro or androgynous. They are concise and work for both men and women.

I sorta agree. It's the one thing I disagree with SFO about. I feel that it's impossible to be truly "non-binary" and it's something I often see people call themselves when they are being "groomed" into gender ideology. What I mean by this is someone young that discovered gender ideology and don't know their identity. Online cultists grab them and tell them these sort of things, ignoring that identity is related more to hobbies or personality. I've watched three friends get pulled into it. It's all internet peer pressure. Humans are such a sexually dimorphic species, that we have to express one or the other trait of M or F. The only time I take "non-binary" claims seriously is when those individuals put gender as the least important thing about them. Otherwise, you are correct; it's for show.

She recently went after a small business, accusing them of perpetuating diet culture, when in reality they are a bakery that caters to people with diabetes and other illnesses. She thought she was going to "stand up for the world" by taking on a small business, but it backfired on her and everyone was pretty pissed off at her for it. @@JoshuaKennedy321 the whole of Matthew 23 is Jesus' seven woes upon the Pharisees, who made an outward show of righteousness while not being righteous inwardly. An example of this same self-centered righteousness can be seen in Ananias and Sapphira in Acts chapter 5, who sold their land, gave some to those in need, while lying that they gave all of the money. They did a righteous thing, but it was a lie for their own exaltation It is a question of priorities. In the seven woes, Christ likens the Pharisees to whitewashed tombs: outwardly clean, but full of corruption within. They tithed the herbs in people's window boxes, but neglected the weightier matters of the law. As in all questions of how one ought to live, one ought to look at Christ's example. Christ was the son of God, but he humbled himself and served others, washing the feet of his disciples and ultimately humbling himself to be unfairly arrested, tried, beaten, insulted, and brutally killed. Whenever Christ or the apostles did something to be seen, it was not so they could be praised, but so that God may be praised, and that they could serve as an example for others. I am sorry for the lengthy reply, as I am not eloquent enough to put it shortly. I hope this helps.

When someone says to me they're "not cis" in whatever terms, my first impulse is to ask what that means. Usually the explanation they give comes down to something incredibly superficial, such as hair style, clothing, or makeup. Not always, but disturbingly often. All they're doing is reinforcing gender stereotypes by saying something like a guy with long hair is feminine or a woman wearing jeans is masculine (or otherwise not feminine). Gender dysphoria is a totally different thing, but now the progladytes are trying to sweep that under the table. As soon as all of these new genders were being pushed, this started to happen because the more terms you have, the more specific the definitions have to be and it's much easier to define things based on what you can see rather than abstract concepts. So now, instead of just saying "hey, do what you like and don't worry about labels," we have a whole generation of people who worship labels.

When I came out to my friends I had to spend whole days convincing them that I had arrived to my decision of my own accord and that it's something I genuinely need and not just some nonsense leftists forced onto me. It's really quite infuriating to have people try to deny your own ability to come to your own decisions in good faith, and I've had it from both political camps, the right think I've been brainwashed by the left and the left think I've internalised transphobia for not agreeing with them

If ANY of my FRIENDS would come out to me as wanting to undergo transition I would offer myself as reflection surface to their reasoning. Not out of disrespect but quite the opposite, because they are most relevant to me! My main arguments would be: - I believe you can lead a life as a non-stereotypical man or woman or as SFO remarked both. (e.g. I dislike sports and it took a while to come around to beer) - I know only few people who are truely happy with their body. - If it is about gaining acceptance by others, that may never happen. I know a 30+ man looking like an eerily bearded boy. However I get wanting to have tried all you could do to get accepted. But seems like a recipe for disappointment.

Stop trying to complicate things and forcing people to cater to you for existing. I still don’t understand how non-binary makes sense as a type of gender. I understand gender as a masculine/feminine spectrum. When people say they identify as anything but male, female, something in between, or neither; to me it sounds like a category error. The way I see it, If gender can mean anything, it doesn’t really mean anything? If everyone had their own unique gender, would gender even be a useful construct? I don’t think so. Gender was originally meant to distinguish people/things with masculine or feminine traits, similarly to how Spanish words are often implicitly gendered. I wonder why there aren’t any Spanish words that are gendered as non-binary.🤔

So lacking the recipits fell free to call me a lier. Having said that: Several years ago (2016? 2017?) I loo,ec up the origins of 'cis gendered. Everyone knows cis is a term from chemistry of course. But how did it come to be applied to gender? Well, of course as the term trans became popular some people feel we needed a term for nontrans people. And using 'normal' was offensive, of course. So some trans person - on tumbler iirc - took cis from chemistry and applied to to gender. But my point is they ('they' because I don't recall their gender or sex) was quite specifically using it as an insult. It was meant as an offensive term for normal people, to 'get back at them' for being belittling to trans people. So 'cis' should be considered an offensive term, something not to be embraced but one outright rejected. Something not to be uttered in polite company. At, least IMHO.

I've spoken with some of the most hardcore SJW types about it and I just think that a lot of gender theory is rooted in what are honestly pretty sexist beliefs. Like, "If you don't conform exactly with the stereotypical traits of masculinity or femininity then that means you aren't a man/woman." Boys tend to like robots and mechanical toys even as babies, but that doesn't mean a boy who doesn't like robots is less of a boy than the ones who do. But the people I spoke with unironically said that if you are cis and had to move to a society where gender stereotypes are reversed, that would make you become trans (in more words but that was the gist of the response). Or, you know, the very real argument made that tomboys can't simply be normal girls who happen to have a more masculine personality. Not conforming entirely to a stereotype or having the degrees by which you exhibit those traits change often is just being a person with an identity that isn't defined by your chromosomes. I have never seen any real explanation about the "gender spectrum" that doesn't just boil down to some sort of sexist logic. Transgenderism you can actually point to something that is a very real condition (body dysmorphia) and say, "It's part of that." Non-binary you can't... Unless you want to say Munchausen.

They spent all this time breaking down stereotypes of men and women, saying it’s sexist (to simply ‘notice’ common behaviour), only to hold people to even worse standards than they rallied against. If you’re not Chad you’re not a man, but you can still be a woman despite having a dick. There’s no logical consistency, it’s whatever they want it to mean at anytime and always changing. And “always changing” is just nice way of saying “I don’t want to make clear definitions because that means I can be held accountable and I’m allergic to responsibility”.

I always found the term non-binary to be odd when adopted by someone who believes in more than two genders. Bi literally meaning two. Therefore contradictory when used by someone claiming to be, as opposed to using the term gender non-conforming. All this language is confusing because the terms aren't concrete and apparently won't be.
@cosmic-tiger

And even gender non-conforming is a bit of an odd distinction from the norm because almost everyone deviates to some degree from the behaviours/interests typically associated with the gender matching their birth sex. The same people who decry the idea of gender roles often happily accept the gender theory that bases itself on a pretty rigid interpretation of what defines the male or female gender.

I still think this non-binary thing is completely made up and not a legit concept. Not a single man on this planet feels/behaves 100% masculine at all times. That doesn't mean he is somewhere between or outside of female and male all of a sudden. And afaik pronouns are used in relation to one's biological sex and not in relation to ones gender identity. We do not have pronouns for mindsets or self-identification and never had because it is not practical whatsoever. You can identify as anything you want and you deserve the same rights as anyone else, but none of that changes anything about your biological sex. If your biological sex is male, your pronouns are he/him and that's that.

But regarding Destiny, what I want to know is, why did he feel the need to make it known that he's non binary, if it's so personal and not something he needed some kind of validation for. I'm just wondering what possible situation would anyone need to know it, given his pronouns remain the same. Call me cynical, but he got a kick out of throwing the (normally sought after 'stunning and brave' comment) back in the other guys face.

Non-Binary always seemed such a weird term to me. It describes what it is not but not what it is, and therefore appears to be a term used for people who want to be special without doing anything important. Companies will take anything that they know won't damage them in the short term, and its why they support things like this, like BLM, like Trans Crosswalks.

All it says to me is "I'm a twat who has no identity and feels the need to be special among the crowd"....or maybe I'm just a sardonic cynical old bastard ;)

Ever realize that no one can be a tom-boy or tom-girl anymore? People are confusing personality with identity. You’re born the way you are and the best way to live life is to capitalize on your strengths and work on your weaknesses.

Commodification is a two-way street. To normalise an idea, activists will tolerate a grifter who fakes a given idea. They defend it/ignore the problem because they gain ideologically from it. Which makes me ask: is the idea at hand actually useful? That's my criticism with modern gender identity theory: is it a useful idea, in sync with reality, that is worth rejecting past wisdom for? Our sexes have an influence on our behaviour. Chemical balances, different brain structures, etc. These aren't strong enough to prioritise over our shared humanity or be considered a part of identity. But they exist: concepts like "girly", "guy talk", "don't break a young girl's heart" etc wouldn't exist if they didn't. Hence why I can accept that masculine and feminine genders have some utility to society. They aren't absolutes, just repeating trends. But what does non-binary look like, mentally? It doesn't have an intrinsic, unique trait: it's just normal human behaviour, that we are calling something else. And for what end? To put the "What you are" above the "Who you are". This is backwards and illiberal: a person's character is their thoughts and actions, not these flavours they express them in. So I'm concerned that nonbinary thinking both has little biological grounding and is philosophically regressive. Am I denying anyone's existence by saying that? I'd say no. You're still a human being: I love and respect them insofar as I do humanity in general. I just don't agree with them on something. Like I do with everyone

Had an argument with a marxist a few days ago. I posited that much of the progressive/liberal philosophy today was a derivative of marxism. He argued that no, real marxism is materialistic, and since these movements were based on immaterial concepts they could not be derivative of marxism by definition. He argued that "real" marxists disliked this new liberalism because of how they reuse marxist language and pervert marxist ideas. My counter to that was, marxism is material sure, but these people view those immaterial concepts as material commodities. To them, oppression and privilege and everything else are commodities that can be accumulated and used to determine who the bourgeoise is. The argument went back and forth but mostly he just kept saying it didn't count if they were real materialists, and that equating that movement with marxism is a nazi dogwhistle.
