This is a beautiful song written and performed with Lionel as lead. He is not only a fabulous singer but he is a prolific songwriter, having written songs he recorded but also for Kenny Rogers and many others. I’ve seen him in concert 3 times and he had everyone out of their seats dancing. One of the best concerts ever.

As an old guy, I feel bad for those that never experienced "The Midnight Special" in real time (no VCRs, no on-demand). Real groups playing their hits live was how we got to see what they looked like in those days after hearing these songs on the radio. And how great is Lionel Richie?

I think Lionel said he wrote this about his mum! How lovely is that! Lip synching to the album version (long version) here I believe. There are zero differences in the vocal between this and the recor, not even minor ones - which is never the case with truly live performances (or even between different studio takes of a song).

In 2024 💜 Lionel Richie Still memorized me..Aging like fine wine with a bit of help, sure, he turned 75 June 20 this year! I d go out 8 ish to a club or with friends and get home by midnight to watch the Midnight Special. They had absolutely the top entertainers with their current songs out or performing their newest songs on live tv. I was always amazed at how they always had the most famous and biggest stars on their shows every weekend night. It truly was an event to watch. Unless you were out on a date somewhere listening to those very same songs. Great, great memories that I was fortunate to have experienced then - back in the day.Lionel Ritchie was one of the most recognizable sounds along with The Commodores at that time. Everyone alive back then loved their music.

Midnight Special and Don Kirshner's Rock Concert were incredible. I probably saw this on Midnight Special because Commodores (because of Ritchie) were a favorite of mine. I didn't remember his hair this long, but it been a long time since I saw this version.

For me, that is Lionel Ritchie's best. I am easily old enough and did see Don Kirshner and Midnight Special, so original MTV was great, but was in late teens for this show. The piano, back-up stuff, incredible. Light a candle, dim the lights, sip wine, or highball... as deep a mellow vibe you feel, because he invites you in and you feel the song
