I liked the discussion about the “sonic budget”; balancing the envelope of pitch & tone against attack and subtle dampening. Great playing always helps to pick out those elements of each drum. Lastly, but not least, the mix also perfectly represented each solo style for us to discern what you can achieve with this whole kit.

Its funny how you mentioned about engineers remarking on the 16" floor toms, I like you I prefer more open sound but playing a lot in venues that have a house engineer mostly remark on my 16" floor tom. My response to this has been to start adding cotton wool balls about 3 of them pulled apart abit and dropped inside my floor tom, works a treat just to take some of the openness off the drum for micing the drum , maybe you could explore that. It worked for me.

For me as a drummer and an engineer, it sounds great. It's more or less, a more durable coated Evans G2, so it's definitely the heads I would use on tour and leave them on for the rest of the tour. In the studio, it may vary. If I'm just doing your standard rock sound, I wouldn't mind using the UV2. If I need more attack on the way in, I would go with the clear G2. If I know the drummer that's coming into the studio is a hard hitter, then I would definitely use the UV2 and just check the tuning every song/take.

I put a set on my Saturn V kit and everything they're saying here is pretty much dead on. For me, they're tied with the EC2s, I love both equally. EC2s for a little more clarity and UV2s for a little more dampening.... depending on your preference.

I'm sold. These things sound amazing. I'm always back and forth between G1s and EC2s on my toms, depending on my desired sound. I have a feeling these UV2s are what I've been wanting all along and likely going on my kick batter side as well. Wish I had crawled from under my rock and known about them earlier. And, Rob, your playing, sound and personality put you WAY up on my favorite drummers list with Jeremy Taggart, Jeff Mercel, Simon Phillips and a few others. Man, your pulse, feel, sound and creativity are superior. Love to catch you live someday.

Nate, Did you opt for the UV2s? I use EC2s clear on my Rack Toms, and G2s coated on the floor toms - PDP Concept Maple kit. I'm trying a UV2 batter head on the maple 14 X 5.5 Snare - the UV 1 was too ringy for my taste. Currently, I am using a HD dry on that snare and the DW Design Series Nickel over Brass 14 X 6.5 Snare. I have bnoth snares Cranked High. Here is a very peculiar thing I discovered last week. During a playing session (at home as a hobby in retirement, playing to My Music), I placed the DW Snare on my 16 inch Floor Tom to get it out of the way, I played the PDP snare in the stand. While doing a fill, I hit the DW snare - Whoa - it sounded Great ! Better. More like the sound I was seeking, like a Ludwig Supraphonic snare - Jon Bonham sound. I've posted this happening everywhere on forums and YT channels. One poster claimed that I was actually playing 2 Drums simultaneously. Another poster said kiddingly, that I may have discovered a new Snare Stand :):). I resurrected playing Drums after 50 Years [1969], and play for recreation about 1 hour a day. Hopefully, a Geriatric Jam session may materialize locally, so I could play with other musicians.

@@Chiroman527 I haven't ventured off to 'Newheadland' yet. I had actually hung up playing for a bit, but inspiration and passion always get their way. I have to play. I hope you don't mind a short story... My very first kit, in the mid 80s, was a St. George stencil kit in orange sparkle and rough shape... with calf-skin heads. A couple years ago an ex-band-mate messaged me with "how do I restore old drums?" I began geeking out with my how-tos and missed the pics he had sent. When he was done and had his fun he said 'come get it'. Yep, identical kit. So I packed up the Sonor yesterday and set up the St. George and, of course, threw on the cans and played along to my 'just have fun' mix. That kit has G1s Anyway, I'm kinda shocked by your head choices. When I'm in an EC2 mood I'd tend to go for the same on floors or an ebony pinstripe (or preferably the Evans equivalent, I haven't used anything other than my initially mentioned in so long lol). Now I'm thinking about your sound and, hmmm... As far as your snare-tom, which already sounds comfy as 'kick' and 'hats', um, heck yes, that's making me dig out a 16" floor tom and... thanks for the new sounds, kind Miss.
@Chiroman527
@Chiroman527 Жыл бұрын
Nate, I don't mind the Short Stories. At 71 YO, retired, i don't have much more to do than to read and relay "stories" of all sorts. I should qualify that with my setup (PDP Maple Concept 7 Drum Kit purchased USED in 2021 via Guitar Center at easily 1/2 Price of a new one), using the EC2s clears on the 8" & 10" rack Toms , a new Red Hydraulic Batter head on the 12" rack tom and the G2s coated on the 14 & 16 " Floor Toms, I have added Evans E-Rings on all of them except the 8" om and none on the Maple or DW Metal Snares. FWIW, I have found the 12" Rack Tom (Maple) the most difficult to Tune to my liking. I keep Tweaking and fooling with both head tuning. As a brief Update, I took the HD Dry batter head off the Maple PDP Snare, checked the bearing edges, rubbed some Bearing edge "grease" on , re-installed the same head, Cranked it up to High on both heads, and That Delivered a more desireable sound to my ear. Not too much overtone - with a nice Crack to the sound. Pertaining to the playing of either snare atop of the 16" Floor Tom, doing that Does Alter the sound of each. I now have taken a EC2 Clear 16" head and placed that in the snare stand, and put the Maple Snare on top of that and got the sound more to my liking. I returned to playing drums after 50 YEARS [1969]. No Gigging (at least not Yet !!:):) ), only at home, about 1 hour a day to My Music (my era music - Rock, pop, Blues, Country Rock, and Motown). I have come to learn that drum Tuning is an "art".
@nathanielnicholson559
@nathanielnicholson559 Жыл бұрын
@@Chiroman527 An art indeed. I've always been good at getting a really nice sound out almost any drum, but some of the methods and tips I've seen over the past couple years are mind bending. Aside from taking care of our beloved instruments there really are no rules to good noise. If you haven't you might check out Jeremy Waronker. I don't keep up on or follow many particular drummers, but about him I remember many interesting and creative ways of altering objects to change the sound. As matter of fact, since '89 or so I had been on the hunt for a school hallway fire alarm bell, you know the ones. For whatever reason they were very elusive to me. I guess this is becoming another story time. Shortly after my grandfather died in '00 my parents asked me the question I never stopped to think I'd have to react to, "do you want anything that was his?" After my internal recoil and skin-crawl and 'um, no..., thanks' the thought of scavenging like a rat turned to his doorbell, a heavy, pewter bell that hung majestically, albeit humbly tucked unobtrusively...and the tone... oh, my goodness, the tone. Since then the bells have come in on a steady enough drip. Glad you found such a great deal on your kit! I've heard some great sounds from them. If you feel froggy you can send me a list of stuff you like to play along to or links. You mentioned your "MY music". Do you write and record? I'd love to hear it if you're so inclined.

I have been using a UV2 on my snare for about 6 months now and there is absolutely no other head that would have lasted anywhere close to that long with how often and hard I play. The coating still looks like the day I bought it compared to a G2 I had on it before that started to chip after about a month of playing. Evans really created something revolutionary with these heads/coating and I feel like its very underappreciated within the drumming space overall.

Great video. Thanks to all that put this together. Evans fan for long time. Just like Rob, been using UV1's since they first came out. I'm more old school jazzer, lots of brush work. UV1's great for all I'm doing. I put a UV2 on a 13 x 7 snare, it worked fine for an outdoor gig. Drum was mic'ed didn't have to use any gel either. Thinking I might need to put some UV2's on the rest of kit next time I do a pop or country gig. Enjoy Rob Brown videos a lot. I've been encouraging fellow drummers to check them out. It might not be the most outstanding thing to drummers, as far as feel or response, but the magic - from an engineer's perspective as well as a listener in general - is in having the bottom head pitched correctly. I've found a pitch 1 octave up and then plus a 3rd (or 6th, for that 3rd down thing) to whatever your top head's fundamental (or key signature, if you want to stay busy retuning) is works best to bring out the resonant frequencies of a shell without having to worry with the top head's pitch Vs. tightness as much. All shells are different in response, even within and between the same models/sets, so care must be taken and tone checked at several distances (through walls, outside the venue, house, etc) but if you're not pitching the bottom heads correctly and uniformly to a sequence of notes that make sense with what other instruments are playing... you've fd up. If that's the case then a mix engineer (live or studio) will be stuck having to worry with time issues - ie toms and kicks 'ringing' too long or not long enough. That's when they'll start messing with things in an intrusive way because, this should be obvious, SOMETHING IS WRONG. If the overtones ringing out of the shell (literal harmonics) are in proper pitch engineers will overlook a lot of bloom and sag and phase reverberation because, wait for it, THE SHT JUST SOUNDS GOOD. It's really just that simple. You make magic and others respect it. You hit all the technically 'right notes' but those note don't sound magic -> they will start fking with dynamics processors in the signal path to attempt to either mask that sht or to magickify it (ie muddy your sht). Oh, they'll have some slick tech sounding words to make it seem legit but it boils down to your sht has zero mojo.

@KillSchwill
@KillSchwill 4 жыл бұрын
UV2 is a unique sounding head. They definitely don't have as many overtones as a regular two ply. But has just as much sensitivity and slightly more attack. I've always come back to the G2 on my snare drums after trying countless other heads. But now since the UV2 is out I'm starting to like those. The G2 is definitely an all around favorite followed by an Aquarian Hi Velocity for straight rock music. The UV2 is sort of the middle ground between those, and with it's added durability and ease of tuning it might eventually become my go to. I have yet to try them on my toms as I usually go with the EC2 clear. G2 on toms are fine, but lack the attack the clear has. So maybe the UV2 will give me that attack I want on all my drums.

What’s good Rob!! Now that the Uv1’s and Uv2’s have been out fir a while which do you prefer most. I play at church with drums completely enclosed and every drum mic’d which would you recommend. Awesome review btw. Thanks

Rob, great Video man, as usual. I got UV 1 snare batter head for a maple Snare 14 X 5.5 to replace a HD Dry that I was using. It's Ok. I find that the UV1 is just off to my ear. A bit too Ringy. I'm no Pro, far from it, as a 70 YO, recreational / Hobbist drummer (resurrected after a 50 Year Hiatus [1969] ), playing about 1 hour a day to My Music. Should I opt for the UV2 snare batter head? FYI, the HD Dry on my Brass / Nickel 14 X 6.5 DW design series Snare works great but was not suitable on the Maple Snare.

I like my toms muddy sounding. If that’s what you might call it. I think I got that way after I listened to the There’s Nothing Left to Lose record by Foo Fighters.

After hearing these heads I really want to try them with some cleae Evans Hydraulic heads as reso heads. I like that dead and fat sound, but I kinda feel that hydraulic's dent fairly easy so I really want to try the combo of UV2s on the top of my toms for their durability and clear Hydraulics on the bottom to get that fat low thud that I want!

UV heads are no where near heavy as hydraulics, it’s just the coating is durable.

I tried an Evans head once about 15 years ago and, while it sounded good and was easy to tune up, I found the lifespan of the head to be less than half that of my usual Remo Emperor. Has Evans improved the longevity since?

Great question. I've had the same experience more than once. I've stayed with Remo because of the longevity. These UV2's sound great no doubt.

I think because of the coating technology, it'll outlast any drumhead by 10.
