Nice quality video! I must say though that the title is sort of misleading... it should probably be something more like : The History of Emulation on console... or something like that...

you do talk about pc emulation but "The COMPLETE History of Emulation" still reeeeaaallly isn't an accurate description here. Especially with how chronologically out of wack the video is. We didn't even see the actual beginnings of game emulation. I'd probably title it like "Game Companies and Emulation" something along those lines. I was excited to see how emulation started and grew into the modern day but I really didn't get that here. Everybody knows about virtual console

So, one small correction, Yuzu wasn't really the emulator people used to play TotK when it leaked. It was very crashy in Yuzu then, and both Yuzu and Ryujinx made it a policy not to push patches specific to improving the game until after its official launch. It just happened to be far more playable in Ryujinx at the time (with some work by the community), though, so that's what everyone used.

Yuzu was taken down just because they've released a version on the patreon that had bugfixes for nonexistent games (that had to be obtained thru piracy), that's why they didn't take down ryuuxix
@GreenTea-li4zg7 ай бұрын
This is something people are saying but that didn't happen. The patreon builds were ahead of the public builds but they didn't contain patches for unreleased games. Both ryujinx and yuzu had policies against that. Sometimes games just worked before release because that's going to happen with an emulator as it gets more accurate, but not through specific patches pre-release. That also wasn't what Nintendo's argument for taking them down was, it had more to do with the one untested in court aspect of the emulator, circumventing encryption used as copy protection.

@@GreenTea-li4zg I'm pretty sure devs of it distributed patches "off the grid" which would be considered as the project doing it if it was linked back to them. It was dumb. Everyone sucks in that situation.
@GreenTea-li4zg7 ай бұрын
@@polocatfan Maybe they murdered someone, too. There's about as much evidence. If they made off the grid patches than they didn't push them to the github until later and no one I know in the emulation community got them, and we're all generally aware of what other big emulators are doing. Somehow Nintendo wasn't even aware since they didn't include that in their original suit. We can make up whatever we want about it (which is kinda what's happening, and a big game of telephone) but it's just random speculation. Nintendo was more careful in their original suit to walk the line of associating them with people playing leaked copies but wording it in a way that implied things that werent there. For example, one thing they used to draw a connection was that many downloads for the leak pointed people to Yuzu (though, at the time, actually most said to use ryujinx which worked better), or that they got more Patreons. These are all things other people did that associated the emulator with the leak, but weren't things the Yuzu devs did, and the Yuzu devs then were very aware of how doing anything with a leak could look, which is why they themselves didnt. What a Yuzu dev typed on his own computer that he didn't distribute, who knows, generally you don't get in trouble for that for obvious reasons.

@@GreenTea-li4zg i remember going down a rabbit hole when looking into the lawsuit about if what nintendo says about modding a console being illegal was true. and turns out it is under 17 U.S.C Sec. 1201(a)(1)! and not only that, but after heavy scrutiny from literally every big media group, repairing your consoles disc drive was only made legal in 2021! and only the disc drive, anything else with even the lightest bit of software protection its still illegal. it gets wilder the more you look into it, like the fact john deere said people shouldnt modify their tractors because itll cause... gasp... music piracy! and the courts said "oh yeah that makes so much sense we wouldnt want that!". dmca law is fucked and needs to be rewritten
@Wesmoen6 ай бұрын
Those fixes weren't implemented in their Early access or mainline after the release. TOTK was fixed by mod makers releasing a seperate mod. Many games were already able to boot pre launch. Yuzu always stated they never want to make game specific bugfixes. The source code of their early access was free to access. You only paid for their specific build. You could easily bypass that. Yuzu even gave instructions to make a build for yourself, the payment was literally a donation. Ignoring their Patreon and source code made players wait for two weeks at tops. Mainline got regularly updated. The discord server, that became their downfall. For some reason they had the need to share the roms for debugging. Which isn't allowed of course. This is why Yuzu had to settle out in court. They had everything in their favor, but fell down due to negligence.

Actually, there are multiple forks of Yuzu & Citra out there with very little effort needed to obtain them, also, you didn't mention Ryujinx at all? Which is actually the most accurate of the switch emulation projects, having a much higher compatibility than Yuzu (or said forks) do. Yuzu was mainly focused on performance on lower end devices, sacrificing accuracy alongside some other bugs I've not seen anyone else mention for some reason.. Also! After the Connectix lawsuit, Sony bought them out and proceeded to discontinue their emulator :

This isn't even *remotely* close to being a "complete" history of emulation. This is barely scratching the surface of mostly more recent Nintendo oriented emulation. This doesn't even *mention* anything regarding systems like the Amiga; or how DOOM was built on a system that essentially emulated an IBM compatible machine with MS-DOS; or anything like that. It also doesn't touch on Android and Mobile development; where you have to develop apps using an Android emulator. All this video is, is a rant about Yuzu and Citra being taken down, with a bit of a meandering lead-up to that point.

@Commercialape6 ай бұрын
1:50 that is ABSOLUTELY false. I used a GameCube controller heavily on Wii virtual console titles more than just n64. I used a mad catz controller with a turbo button to beat Super Mario 64 with 16 stars with the backwards jump glitch. This guy is an amateur.

You are well articulated in this video and make your points coherently, but the title is super off. This is not the complete history of emulation. Starting with the VC was probably not the best decision either. If you went over the complete history of emulation the video would likely be an hour or two long.
