Prior to being placed on display at Warner Bros in Watford, 5972 was still used to haul occasional excursion trains. Just before 5972 Olton Hall was withdrawn from traffic in 2014 when both it's boiler certificate and mainline certificate's expired, the engine worked two final railtours which we're called "The Wizards Express" and ran from Manchester Victoria to York via Carnforth and Skipton. 5972 hauled both trains to York from Carnforth and then back to Carnforth (the 1st trip on the return journey being from York to Hellifield due to a late evening engineering block in Manchester). Tickets for the trip we're £69 per person and I managed to get tickets to go on both trips.

I knew about Platform 7 1/2 before I watched this video because the fact was stated at the end of a Harry Potter book as a bonus treat for fans. I researched Platform 7 1/2 further on the Harry Potter Wiki. I also knew about the Memory Charms and Concealment Charm used to create the Hogwarts Express and the other methods of transportation underage wizards used to get to Hogwarts thanks to bonus facts stated at the ends of other Harry Potter books. Thank you, Dean, for this in-depth history lesson. I'm sure it's convenient for those who don't read the Harry Potter Wiki.

Every time I see this, I'm reminded how much I love the Hogwarts express, but also that I wanna make a 'book accurate' version using as period accurate equipment as possible with modifications. Still looking for a good model for the locomotive since early steam locomotives aren't easy to come by... Though still. I'm thinking an early Midland or similar locomotive that's either a 2-2-2 or such without a tender

Since it's a thing outside of the HP universe be it for Muggles or magical folks worldwide, I don't think one can trace the practice back to a single point of origin. Gandalf is only one example from another universe/franchise. Suleyman the magnificent would be one historical figure among many to have earned a descriptor that remained tied to his name long after his demise. Catherine the Great is another...
@TsukabuNosoratori22 жыл бұрын
“Cannot be accessed by muggles” is a bit of a stretch, because Lily Evans and her whole family of muggles including Petunia were able to accompany Lilly to the train. So maybe it’s just family of Muggle borne that are allowed in? Hermione’s parents are also allowed in too.
@kellysouter43812 жыл бұрын
Are they able to get onto the platform or do they say goodbye in the regular station?

They were on the platform according to the books.

You know, I've always had a rather nostalgic love for steam engines. And to actually see one still working in this day and age, even if only in fiction, it's basically a dream come true for me. I also think it was a very cute story about how they got the train for the movies.
@heatherhirst12412 жыл бұрын
You know there are plenty of heritage steam railways all round the world, run mostly by volunteers; there are narrow, miniature, broad and full gauge heritage lines. If you are interested in steam engines, I'd really recommend you go to one - if that's possible for you of course!

Wizards didn't want to use a form of transportation they didn't invent? ...did wizards invent brooms, or just make them capable of flight?

I think the wizards did make tjem but they enchanted them so that if a wizard touches the broom its magical properties are unlocked or something like that

Very interesting topic. I never realised how important this train was until after watching this video.
@ceciliacarlid61132 жыл бұрын
Interesting. I did not know about that other platform. Thanks for sharing! One minor thing: it is not impossible for Muggles to enter platform 9 3/4, as you claimed. We see on some occations that Muggles do come onto the platform, but in those cases they are accompaning a magical family member there (remember, for example, the scene when Petunia calls Lily a freak for the first time, which was on that platform). I believe that the reason why most Muggles don't enter it, even though they can, is that they don't know it exists. You have to enter it intentionally, knowing what you will find there, otherwise it doesn't work.

If there are always people from the Ministry keeping an eye on the gate, then why didn't anyone help when he didn't know what to do until the Weasleys showed up, or when Dobby blocked the gate and Ron and Harry missed the train? Just wondering

Hogwarts Express is an express route, not a named engine. Express routes run from point A to point B with no stops in between. Thus from Kings Cross to Hogsmead Village. The engine we know from the movies is not the first and only engine to have been used on this route. The engine we know is a GWR 4900 Class engine number 5972. This is a Hall Class engine designed by Charles Collett in 1923. The first prototype was built in 1924, and went into full production in 1928. There is no way engine number 5972 could have been used prior to 1928. So from 1830 to 1928 there were other engines and coaches used on the express route known as the Hogwarts Express. In the game "Hogwarts Legacy" which takes place sometime in the 1800's I am hoping the game designers use an "era appropriate" engine and coaches for the Hogwarts Express route.
