The Alex McQueen Master was the first of a new line of regenerations gifted to him by the Celestial Intervention Agency for helping deal with the Ravenous in the Eighth Doctor adventures. The first of the Time War masters was actually the child incarnation which we see in the Doctor Who Magazine comic strip.

Would love to have a complete history of the doctor's companions. You could give a little background description for each one for example: Barbra (from 1963) was a history teacher at the Coal Hill school and was one of the first companions that we know of to have set off with the doctor for adventures throughout time and space. That would be really cool!

Theory: what if Dhawan and Missy are from alternate timelines? If there was a percentage of allowance for inconsistencies due to the timelines crossing, whilst regenerating, Simm became so determined not to "turn good" he forces himself to regenerate into an incarnation even more evil?

Really nice work, though I wished you had included the timeline crossing from the Big Finish audios (Dust Breeding, The Two Masters, Ravenous, etc.) as the explanations for various Master regenerations/changing bodies. I also like the way you tie the Dhawan Master to Missy. I see the Dhawan Master as an addict having a relapse; he talks about killing being a buzz for him, something he has an addictive need for; The Doctor tried to get Missy to become "sober", but once that influence was lost after The Doctor Falls and with the shock of the Timeless Child revelation, he fell back into his destructive habits. Hell, you could even tie this back to the Master being "Death's Champion", having a supernatural disposition towards killing and chaos

The Warlord is a very Master like character. The first time I watched that story, I really assumed that the Warlord was going to turn out to be the Master but it didn't turn out that way. I think that he is a character who later inspired the Master, possibly also the Meddling Monk. I like the idea that these both are previous incarnations of the Master.

I was a child of the 80s so I had seen the Ainley Master and I had seen earlier stories with Delgado on VHS. When I first saw Channing in Spearhead from Space I just assumed that he was the Master. My head cannon has always been that when the Doctor defeated the Nestene it tore the consciousness from the Channing Master's mind burning through a few regenerations which tied in to Delgado being the last incarnation. In my brain this is why Delgado is working with the the Autons to get his revenge on Doctor when we first meet him.

Actually, Missy is directly after the Saxon incarnation, O isn't after Missy, an incarnation called the Lumiat. Missy managed to regenerate into a new incarnation by creating an Elysian field after Saxon killed her. The process of cryogenetic extraction destroyed her body but retained a copy of her consciousness before regeneration. This regeneration only did good, even stopped a few of the Master's previous schemes. Missy killed the incarnation after she "grew bored" of her. Missy knew this next incarnation would be less kind than the Lumiat. Missy then dumped the Lumiat on a random planet where she regenerated into O. After regenerating into a new incarnation, the Master returned to his dark ways, looking down on Missy for trying to better herself and spending so much time with the Doctor.

11:49, because of the Aliens of London/World War Three thing in where Rose missed out an entire year, now in 2006 instead of 2005. The Doctor therefore put a limit of how far he could go back to, which was around May 2008. Somehow, the Master arrived in January 2007.

“The Doctor Falls” actually goes out of its way to suggest Missy is the next Master after Harold Saxon and explains that the timestreams getting crossed is WHY she has foggy memory about it. The whole Cyberman thing also adds context to why the next time we see the Master after Missy makes him regenerate because he won’t help the Doctor, she is making an army of Cybermen to try to befriend the Doctor again. None of that is really a “theory”; that’s just what the episode is suggesting. However, it also seems clear to me that Steven Moffat probably wanted to use that memory fog and the fact that we never actually see John Simm regenerate into her on screen as an opportunity for future writers to slot in as many Masters between the two that they may want, as it provides some wiggle room to potentially explained certain things away. But of course Chris Chibnall, in a series of dumb writing choices, did not take advantage of that obvious door Moffat left open for him, and instead decided to just disregard the lore of the show (just as he did with Timeless Children - what an unfortunate pattern), which is the other thing you call a theory that actually has received official support beyond your own headcanon: if I remember correctly, Sacha himself and perhaps Chris, too, confirmed that his Master is after Missy. But of course, they provide absolutely no explanation for how he is alive again or why he is evil again. And neither does your theory, really. That learning the Timeless Child secret is what sends the Master back into being an evil lunatic, after a thousand years of character development, not only spits on Missy’s entire arc, but still doesn’t really make sense. That idea’s always been a tough sell, to put it mildly. And of course, still no explanation for how he regenerated and got a TARDIS and all that (“he just did” is not an explanation or theory at all, really).

I feel like at this point with the info we got it can either me Gomez or Dhawan can come after Simm. And I think it's important to remember the 11. His (I want to say 8th) incarnation wanted to be good but went back to being evil after. This could easily be the same with the Master. I can't wait to get more information about how this.

With regard to Curse of Fatal Death, in the Gallifrey Chronicles novel there is a passing reference to the Doctor having 3 different 9th incarnations, which is presumed to refer to Christopher Eccleston, Richard E. Grant, and Rowan Atkinson. Theoretically, it's possible that Pryce's master is Pre-Delgado and simply meeting one of these alternate 9th doctors. Its only a headcanon of course, but given Pryce was absolutely robbed of the roll given how well he plays it in CoFD, it's one I chose to believe

With the new series of Missy from Big Finish, they added a new version of the Master referred to as the Lumiat who is essentially the Master's version of the Valeyard (except instead of being an amalgation of the darker side of the Doctor, the Lumiat is all the "niceness" of the Master - Missy even originally assumes the Lumiat is the Doctor). According to the Lumiat, Missy regenerated by creating an Elysium Field, a device that breaks a body down into it's component atoms and preserves a copy of the 'soul' of the user, allowing the reprogramming of personality while destroying the body. This sparked a regeneration in Missy despite her being unable to regenerate due to how she was killed by the Simm Master. At the end of the story, the Lumiat is killed and regenerates, though it's not stated into who (presumably the Dawan version but... who knows).

I think missy is the last incarnation of the master as she is the end point for the character her turning good and the ambiguous regeneration of John Simms master and missy not really remembering is designed to fill the cap. So writers can still write evil masters such as The spymaster but at some point the master eventually regenerates into his/her final incarnation missy.

I have two seperate theories as to how missy became Sacha Dhawan's master. 1.) Missy dies and cannot regenerate after being killed by the Master in The Doctor Falls but when the doctor blows everyone up to stop the cybermen missy dies again (similar to how Rory dies twice in The Angels Take Manhatten) thus creating a paradox so Missy lives. Then she finds out about the Timeless Child which drives her to the limit and she goes to Earth, ambushes Oh, compresses him and takes his body in order to try and kill the Doctor. 2.) Missy is killed by the Master and cannot regenerate but when the Doctor is killed by the cybermen he touches the grass with his hand (which is full of regeneration energy) so maybe the regeneration energy from the Doctor's hand reaches Missy and she regenerates but keeps the same face before going to Gallifrey and discovering the secret about the timeless child which drives her to the limit so she goes to Earth, ambushes Oh, compresses him, takes his body and tries to kill the Doctor. Also does anyone notice how Clara has met Missy before (namely when she gets the Doctor's number from the Time Lady) yet doesn't recognise her in Dark Water when she and the Doctor are trying to rescue Danny Pink.

Good video, I like the graphics. Though, as a Master Timeline Connoisseur (TM), there are a few things that bug me personally, I do kinda feel like the Classic Masters were skimmed over, when there's a whole lot of juicy, juicy content there. But hey, atleast you got Missy's placement right (the Doctor Fall's dialogue clearly implies she's directly after Simm but was hazy because of the paradoxical nature of his death) as well as the Dhawan Master's placement. So props for that.

I think, knowing that the Classic Masters are loved and mostly well known I didn't want to dwell reading out facts that people know from a TARDIS Wiki article. I knew it would be a long one and I diverted my attention more towards the stuff we know less about in the Resurrected era. That being said, I do agree and if I were to start again, I'd definitely include more classic stuff :)

In a book called The Gallifrey Chronicles long before The Timeless Children aired, they state there were 3 9th Doctors, therefore making the Shalka and Atkinson Doctors canon as alternate reality versions of the Doctor, so maybe that was the same with the Master.

Love the video, but one slight correction- the people at the scoundrel club _did_ understand the concept of regeneration, or at least they kinda accepted that even though this guy looked different every time it was still the same person. The scoundrel club was just massively sexist and when they saw Missy take the seat the Master always had, kinda went "haha but you're a WOMAN. we can't have WOMEN in our secret evil club!!" and THEN Missy murdered all of them

I like to imagine that like the Shalka Master there is a copy of the Master buried in the TARDIS we know and that managed to manifest itself as the Dream Lord in Amy’s choice after the psychic pollen awoke him and the Doctor lied to Amy and Rory about the dream lord being himself because he doesn’t want them to know about his past with the Master. I like this theory although it could just be because I’m still bitter that Matt Smith never had a story with the master.

My theory about Missy's regeneration... Simm's Master materialized his TARDIS around her and rescued her in the Doctor Falls - recalling that the Master could never really ever kill him/herself (Last of the Time Lords). The Simm Master poured all of his spite into Missy to trigger a meta crisis regeneration. The lack of remaining spite in Simm Master therefore led to a slightly less spiteful regeneration into Missy. Meanwhile Missy regenerated most likely directly into Sacha Dhawan (with extra spite) - presumably a form chosen because Missy had previously surveilled the human operative that was a copy of Sacha Dhawan (whom he later kept in his pocket in miniature form).

I still go back and forth with Gomez and Dhawan. If it was after it would have to be after the Lumiat. But I agree what what you said if he is after. But I like the idea that Missy made the doctor a cyber army to try and get him to stop her younger self from distorting Gallifray. Also, how funny would it be if the doctor turning into a women because of Missy then Dhawan tuning into a women because of the doctor.

I like the order despite the large gaps, however I feel the Master's knowledge of the Doctor being the Timeless Child was bestowed sometime before or during Gomez's regeneration. During the series 9 premier she explains to Clara she's cared about the Doctor, "Since the Cloister Wars. since the night he stole the moon and the President's wife. since he was a little girl." She then suggests one is a lie, but in the series finale, the Doctor tells Clara it was the President's daughter, and he didn't steal the moon, he lost it. I feel either Missy had this information since her first appearance and had no need to tell the Doctor, or Dhawan and Gomez should be switched in the line-up. If the latter is the case, it could explain Dhawan's occasionally deranged performance, similar to John Simm. This would leave Missy as the last known incarnation, and one that had at least to some extent become good with the Doctor. I hear Jodie's final special for Oct. 2022 should see some incarnation return, and I'm excited to see which side they're on.

I completely agree that the Sacha Dhawan Master came immediately after Missy. The John Simm Master shot Missy for her committing to an act of good. This would surely count as the ultimate negative reinforcement, causing the newly-regenerated Master to relapse into evil. However, Lisa McMullin's Big Finish audio drama The Lumiat introduces a morally good incarnation of the Master played by Gina McKee, which Missy regenerates into after her death on the Mondasian colony ship. This more-or-less invalidates my above reasoning. I've long had the theory that the decaying Master in The Deadly Assassin et al is actually the direct successor of Missy. The Simm Master shoots Missy, then regenerates into her. Due to the out-of-sync timelines, the newly-regenerated Missy has only a subconscious memory of shooting their future self as the Simm Master, and starts researching and preparing on how to survive it. This leads Missy to develop methods of channelling deadly energy for beneficial use, which we see in Death in Heaven and The Magician's Apprentice. Facing her past self on the Mondasian colony ship, Missy uses this technology to withstand the Simm Master's laser screwdriver blast, channelling the blast into a drastic regeneration. However, the next Master's body rejects this foreign energy and begins to decay (like a terrible autoimmune reaction), resulting in the decaying incarnation in The Deadly Assassin. This is almost certainly not canon, but I still think it's a fun theory.

The whole missy/sacha is difficult. I think I'd prefer sacha to be before coz then missy having an off handed remark about a little girl would make sense, she's teasing but knows she cant reveal it that early in the doctors timeline.

I had the theory that the Spy Master came before Missy, and that Missy was the last ever incarnation. Your theory makes more sense though.

The 13th Master is a problem... perhaps the Master hit the regen limit but couldn’t die... knew about the Timeless Child because s/he remembered being the child... went mad as a child looking into the vortex and split into two personalities ... one was sick throughout the history of the Universe... the other, following a parallel time line, was the Doctor who’s sole purpose was to stop the Master/ Missy and heal themselves...make it better. (I’ll have a lie down now... wibble!).
