It shows his fairy tale magical messy personality by being all strange and colourful with random shapes it does really define him especially with Amy as she was part of what made him him and when he lost her that all changed and he got a darker gloomier TARDIS with less personality to show he's lost alot but when he regenerates he is ready for a new life as capaldi with Clara so he takes his sadness and turns it to life by warming up the colours and giving it book shelves and chairs but then in Jodie's era her TARDIS is very strange and curious like her with a more magestic design and back to the eckelston TARDIS it shows his post war pain and suffering as he and the TARDIS are both beaten and broke but when Tennant takes it he is still not accepting the loss of rose so keeps the design until he accepts it and leaves it as a memorial to his past before moving on to a new era with Smith sorry for the long comment

Capaldi's updated Tardis from 2015-2017 is THE Tardis for me. It's just perfect. We have beautiful illuminated roundels, a stunning console and interconnected time rotor, and an amazing mad scientist technological feel to it. But most of all, the whole interior is literally shaped like a 'shell' of sorts, so it neatly combines the mechanical and organical feelings. What a TARDIS! 😍

I think the easiest fix for Thirteen’s TARDIS interior is to spread out those pillars. They’re very close together and they kind of cramp up the console. Make them further apart and the whole room would open up.

What you said at the end about a flight deck versus living machine: I couldn't agree more. Whittaker's gave me the same vibe as Eccleston/Tennant's because it feels more like an alien creature than a spaceship, which better reflects the nature of the TARDIS. Even though I liked Capaldi's better, I can appreciate what they were going for with the new one and it's pulled off well. I find it funny when people talk about Smith's and Capaldi's as two different console rooms. I remember laughing when Clara got the "you've redecorated" line about it because he literally did just "redecorate" it. He added some furniture and items: it's the exact same room. Although, I suppose it does change the atmosphere a bit.

Yeah completely agree. With your last point, I'd agree but people would be quick to complain if I grouped them together haha! I really like Smith's first TARDIS. Yes the console parts were a bit silly but common the whole show is a bit silly and that's what I love about it. I also really liked the glass floor, made it feel way bigger and generally I feel like it was the "highest" one, the leveled design was just great. And well the warm colors. I was never a fan of the mechanical looking designs, they lacked the "fantastic" feeling, it feels so sterile. If the crystals of S11+ wouldn't look so plastic I would say "yay we go warm again, not those operation rooms".

It was the last tardis to feel like it had a swimming pool in a library, the console of Smith's first filled me with so much wonder like 'what do the hot and cold knobs do?' I personally like Matt Smith, I grew up with him as my doctor, always so jumpy and excited, like a child. I actually kinda like The thirteenth Doctor, Jodie, since it almost captures Smith's eagerness and some of the episodes give little treats and references to older episodes, like Kerblam! Where she mentions the time she fought a giant wasp (10th Doctor) or how she first receives a fez (11th). Sure Jodie's stories might be a bit crap, but its kinda like home. You have a crappy day at work but in the end, you still go back, the Tardis is still going to be the same, I do like neatness and Jodie's is nothing neat, but the awkward theme is reflected, what-other design would you get from wearing a trench coat, sweater, shorts and sneakers like you just fell into a rack at goodwill? Seems a bit silly and I like that

yes! thats exactly why i love the eccleston/tennant console! i always felt the classic ones were a little too impersonal. the beautiful 2005 tardis feels lived in and feels alive. it truly feels like an ancient, breathing machine. belongings and parts are scattered, making it feel like people actually live there. i also think it reflects the doctor at the time; hes not calm, happy, or completely in control of himself and a tardis thats a little bit patched together and unpredictable mirrors that

To me the Capaldi Tardis is absolute peak. It has the fantastically atmospheric silver and blue futuristic finish combined with the personal touches of the old bookshelves and chalkboards. It plays perfectly to Capaldi's portrayal of the Doctor as more of the wise and tired old man. It feels like a home, which no other Tardis has accomplished. I like to think that the reason McGanns Tardis isn’t in the war doctors Tardis is because the McGanns Tardis is designed by The Doctor so when the 8th doctor joined the time war the Doctor changed to make it make it more ready for action and the default roundels came back and the console changed, it probably sounds stupid but that how I like to think

Dude, it ok man, Tennant TARDIS is AMAZING even without nostalgia. What I love about it is that it wasn't designed to look COMPLETELY like a machine, but a living creature which the TARDIS is. The light deriving from the centre of the console denoting to that being the heart of the TARDIS keeping it alive. The organic walls and columns. However, it still incorporates iconic TARDIS traits, like the circular...things on the wall, and all the controls, which feel like it was pieced together, but unlike Smith's first, all the controls felt alien. It truly FANTASTIC!

I can't decide between David Tennant's Tardis and Matt Smith's first Tardis console. All love. Unfortunately even with the custard creme dispenser, I think the worst Tardis has to be Jodie Whittaker's. The big difference is that in Capaldi's TARDIS (I'm using his because he immediately preceded Jodi's) you understand that not only is the TARDIS a time-and-space machine, but, don't forget, it's essentially the Doctor's home--so we saw books and the guitar and the chalkboard and chairs...as you said, like a "study" or a "studio"--when I look at Jodi's Tardis, I have to ask: where does she sit? where does she sleep? Does she just stand around the console all the time? I'd really like to see Jodi's TARDIS expanded upon in the next series.

Say what you will but the Smith 1 Interior has a special place in my heart. I’ve always found it kind of strange how the design of the TARDIS console room usually doesn’t have an emphasis on the size of the ship as a whole. In Smith’s first console room the TARDIS went off in all sorts of different directions, hallways and entire rooms could easily be added mentally and to the set. To this day I cannot think of many other designs quite so open or expansive.

My theory is that when The War Doctor built his console out of random parts, he put the rest in a room in the TARDIS. The 10th Doctor would still have this room when he regenerated. So when the TARDIS was healing it took parts from that room and put it on Smith's Console.

Great video! I do love the warm colors of Tennant's and Whitaker's consoles, and the fact that they look like a living, alien machine. On the other hand, they don't give me a sense that there is a ship that goes on forever attached to those consoles. They look like film sets. With Smith's (2nd) and Capaldi's, the stairs and different levels give you a sense that the Tardis is infinite. But I never liked how "mechanical" they looked. It would've worked if we didn't know the Tardis was alive. Thanks for sharing! I'd love to see a ranking of the companions.

Tom is Lazy agreed, why not connect them to the top, why not add chairs and other furniture, why have it like a a scrap pile in a cavern when we’ve had something as amazing and clean as capaldis or as comfortable and cosy as mcganns, or as classic as Hartnells, doesn’t help Jodie who unfortunately has a horrible director/writer who has made her look like an empty character trying to be someone else, just bring back Davies.

If I'm being entirely honest, I only tolerate Capaldi's TARDIS. I don't like the grey interior, if it weren't for the orange time rotor I'd hate it. It looks too cold to me. Unwelcoming. That is why I like Smith's first and the Eccleston TARDIS. They're both warm looking.
@andykey78

I never really thought that the War Doctor Tardis we see in the 50th was his actual Tardis. The interior was glitching between Tennant and Smith and sort of got stuck on a greatest hits mash up of old and new somewhere in between. Instead of weapons showing how removed the War Doctor was from the Doctor it felt like to him it didn't matter what the Tardis looked like, it was just a machine with no connection to him. When the glitching stopped on 'his' console he didn't claim it as his own, he just got on piloting it. So I'm not convinced we saw the Tardis from the Time War.

My favourite TARDIS will always be 11s first TARDIS, I love its quirkiness and I really think it matches 11s personality at that time I personally don't like 13s TARDIS that much mainly because I think the lighting is too dark around the door and the crystals look weird and plasticy And I know it's an unpopular opinion but I honestly think the Tennant console is really ugly, I just don't like the dark rusty look

In the new era the Tardis console/control rooms became too whimsical (Matt Smith had a built in pinball machine!), if the Tardis is building it's own consoles then adding digital clocks, gramophones, manual typewriters, etc. made no sense - that would be the kind of thing that the Doctor would need to add to replace damaged parts. And maybe I miss that aspect a little of the 'knackered' outdated Tardis. It was overused during the classic era storylines, but when the Tardis goes to the wrong place now it no longer feels natural. Smith 2 & Capaldi's consoles became more 'practical', though there were far more controls that they could ever need or use. The current control room no longer feels like this is the Doctor's home. There's no personal possessions or space, not even a hat rack or a bookshelf or even a fringed lamp.

How is Whittaker's TARDIS so high on this list? Just makes no sense as a design. Cramped, lacks the charm of earlier consoles, un-practical design (no space for books or stuff?), crystal claw thing because...why? Looks like a set on a gameshow. So static.

I don't think that's true, it's darker but the console is rustic and has the sort of 'practicality' that reflects 13. There's a few unecessary walls, but I love the claws a lot, plus the only TARDIS to have the actual police box at the front, which I adore. I also think the walls have hidden the rest of the TARDIS, and if we get an episode where we see more spaces for all of thirteens stuff, it'll go up in a lot of rankings.

I have a theory to explain why the war doctor Tardis doesn’t really make sense as a design lineage. The default Tardis console is the classic Tardis, but my theory is that during the time war the time lords changed the default console room to have the new console room. Since the doctor wasn’t really the doctor during the war he decided that he wasn’t going to customize his interior.

My favorite is Capaldi’s TARDIS. I prefer the red over the greenish color Smith had. The bookshelves are great. I love the hexagonal console, the clicky buttons and switches, and the telepathic circuits, and the levers were great. The two rotating screens were cool. The spinning top of the time rotor with the alternating rings look amazing, especially with the outer white lights spinning. The return of the roundels was great, and they lit up adding color. The only thing I would change would’ve been upping the lighting. Normally it looked great, but in some scenes it looked too dark.

Given the size and layout, I always felt the McGann one was the original Hartnell Console Room updated and rebuilt in hardwood. But the smaller ones from Troughton - McCoy was a different console room altogether, as well as the Eccleston - Capaldi being a third. Three-to-four different Console Rooms, redesigned by each Doctor. One of the reasons why Tom Baker and Sarah walked to an "Auxiliary" Console Room rather than redesign the smaller one he had been (and would be again) using.

Slightly pedantic correction to the Season 8 Pertwee console room... the roundels weren't transparent. They were a kind of a grid, with a space between it and a blank white wall. Lights were placed in between to give them the "Transparent" look. This is explicitly shown when the Tardis loses power in "Death to the Daleks." You get to see one of the lights on the backside of this "grid" fade out.

The 14th Doctor's console room has a nice feel, but feels like the camera angle are much more restricted compared to the Capaldi console. It took a few episodes of the new series to register that the girders move in sync with the rotor and think that comes down to those restricted angle. I also feel that the crystal rotor could be shaved down slightly. On the occasions it's seen up-and-downing on screen, the effect it a bit clunky and as you say, seems like a TV set. We also need some Jodie Whittaker clutter to give it a bit more depth of field.

It's not my number one that belongs to 9 and 10 but I like how they went back to the original roots of the TARDIS to make it feel alive almost.
