I got to say out of all of the family Guy stereotypes, Ida is probably one of the most realistic versions of what transitioning can feel like. Answering weird and uncomfortable questions, having people not accept you for who you are, and people being unable to realize that you're the same person you were just with a different gender is something that a lot of us face when going through these kinds of changes. I got to say though, Brian was really really wrong during the whole "parenting Glen" phase. I feel like if he would have just acted normal and not tried to baby Glenn- it could have gone really well.

Honestly I'm impressed by how much the writers have respected Ida given they're record on more sensitive subjects, at least apart from Bryan's reaction though that could just be them showing once again that Brian's more of an ass than he likes to believe he is. @Hamantha2 жыл бұрын

I have to disagree, Brian's reaction was "over the top" but it wasn't him being an ass. Brian thought Ida was a biological woman and Ida didn't inform Brian that he wasn't one.
@Crow_Smith Жыл бұрын
Honestly, as a trans person, I actually really liked that they gave him such a subtle reaction ...and yes, vomiting for 30 straight seconds is subtle. Lots of people GO OFF when they find out. Many a trans person has died, and their murders walk free because "Well I was hysterical from being SO SURPRISED/CAUGHT OFF GUARD" etc ... like ... literally people can claim they killed someone, out of pure shock and get away with it because the person was trans. People get beaten up just for being trans, even if the person who does it didn't sleep with them or find them attractive. It's why a lot of trans influencers are like "You HAVE to tell people before you sleep with them - it's for your safety and everyone else's too" -- it's really sad but ... yeah people react REALLY POORLY to finding out a lot of the time [even if they're otherwise LGBT people] because they feel "Tricked" even if the person never tricked them. So showing Brian being an ass as usual, while having his reaction be vomiting - I think it was a subtle way to show how over the top people can react to that situation.
@aceknightgaming1542 Жыл бұрын
@@Crow_Smith Never tricked them? 🤔 I strongly disagree just cause the trans person feels like the opposite gender does mean that the other person they are going to sleep with views them as such. The trans person has to be upfront about who they are (being trans) for the other party to properly give consent. Not saying so gives the other party every right to be tricked, but not the right to murder the trans person obviously.

He hates Brian with a passion, the show has established that. He hates how Brian is a hypocrite and it's using the cynicism he despises to get Ida. Brian is a scumbag, he treats his girlfriends like a coward and judges books by their cover. Brian would've hurt Ida in the future and Quagmire knows that... the audience knows that. Quagmire is looking out for Ida as a good son would do. It's not the most intelligent way of doing it but it's not a selfish act, far from it. If you rewatch the series you'll see Brian is not a saint.

Ida is without a doubt one of my favorite characters. She has strong principles which don’t often waiver in the show and I have deep respect for how she is a class act (never flips out even when she could maybe be justified to do so). It’s very believable that she was a respected military commander and has lived a long experienced life, she always feels like she’s written differently than every other character in a way that is both refreshing and a joy to see every time she pops up in an episode. I’m actually glad they don’t use Ida too much because I really don’t want to see my favorite character flanderized to a flat stereotype (and I say that as someone who still enjoys FG, it’s just a thing that happens to often used characters). Honestly, she reminds me of my (cis) mother, in the good parts. And I think that’s why I like Ida so much; she’s not just trans to teach lessons or impart knowledge, she’s a parent who loves her son, a proud veteran, someone confident in her sexuality (given that it’s implied she had an active sex-life in and out of the closet), and someone who refuses to let the world kick her down. In many ways, she’s actually as close a role model as you can get to Family Guy-disregarding obvious ridiculousness that come in the territory of the show being absurd. Plus, I actually find it interesting that she goes by “Dad” still. I struggle with my gender often, and though I’m not sure if I’m trans or gender-fluid, I have no issues when my daughter calls me “Mom” because I view it as a job title and not a gendered title [I much prefer being he/they but absolutely do not want to be called “Dad” because that’s my husband’s title]. I actually feel a little seen by Ida being Quagmire’s Dad because I don’t think I’ve ever seen another person who might feel that way, and it legitimately does not seem to bother Ida, which means she might be in the same boat as me.

Disclaimer, I am a trans woman, but these are my views as both a revewer and my own opinions on her representation from my point of view. I do not speak for all trans people. I didn't hear about Ida until years after she aired, specifically in the Glen loosing his junk episode. I saw how many jokes were made at Ida's expense and really disliked it, but was taken back at how she just...took it. She didn't fight, she didn't get hysterical, she just either ignored the joke or used it to educate on her journey. Is she a perfect character? No, it's Family Guy everyone is a little fucked up, but she is probably one of the best trans representative characters we possibly could get out of something like this. Her sleeping with Glenn and "bring pregnant with his baby" is just...it feel like an episode written by whoever is on the incest train at Rick&Morty, because there is so much wrong with the episode even if you take out the incest. I think Ida is a great character, and has huge potential to help trans men and women see what they can accomplish and live through if they just take hold of their lives and do what they want to do.

Honestly when I first saw the episode which I think I did in fact first see it when it was brand new way back, but anyways I really appreciated the episode when Dan became Ida. To me it really felt like a very realistic situation because honestly it would be really awkward for your parent to change genders. It would kind of turn your world upside down if your parent changed genders, so it made sense that Glenn was not happy about it. I honestly thought it was beautiful when after Ida told him that she wasn't truly happy as a man and now feels so much more free since becoming a woman that Glenn Quagmire listened and realized that he's happy that his father is happy

I love how Idas story covers almost all problems that trans people face in their lifetime. From people who feel disgusted as soon as they find out truth, to family who has hard time exempting it.

I'm a transsexual woman and I personally love Ida as a character. I didn't consider a lot of what others say is offensive to be, because like, they're comparing transphobic people to Peter Griffin. If a viewpoint is espoused by the Griffins its being satirized, not agreed with. They're saying "hey you, we think you're a stupid man-child like Peter". Seth MacFarlane is actually very politically progressive, and he often satirizes reactionary viewpoints using the Griffins.

I wonder if Quagmire would be normal if he was able to live with Ida instead of his mom

As a trans man, Ida is one of my absolute favourite characters in animation. I'm not often fond of how she's treated, but it is realistic. I've had many uncomfortable questions and interactions, especially with family and family friends. Being patient with people is one of those things I've learnt to do. Curiosity isn't a bad thing, and helping others understand often breaks down those negative perceptions people may have been previously exposed to. Ida is an absolute saint with her patience and acceptance of how others feel about her, and I really hope she gets more time in the show as I love seeing her in episodes.

i didn’t really care about ida when she first appeared on the show. mostly bc i thought she’d just be in one episode and we’d never hear from her again like quagmire mom. but Ida presence in the show, she’s really a breath of fresh air and the most level headed character in the show

So many people say that Ida is a transphobic representation, but as a trans person, I LOVE her!! When I first saw Quagmire’s Dad, I felt so SEEN! Her experience is so real. I was also really sad when Ida and Brian broke up. It felt like Brian was starting to be a better person/dog with her in his life. I still ship them 😭
