Would love a Sgt Fury and Howling Commandoes Omnibus! A complete Kirby Westerns Omni would be cool. The War Romance omnibus has been on my radar. Will get this at some point. The standard (war) cover is my preferred cover. As for Kirby's depiction of women, they do seem more attractive within the pages of his romance comics than his regular superhero work (where they seem more iconic beauty).

And I want to make a small observation to Omar. It's constructive observation, I will not directly contradict you because I don't have the book in my hands, you do. But you should remember that back then in the Golden and Silver age the covers had more variation of shades, hues and colors, they left the best that technology had to produce the covers while the interiors had the flat colors. As I said I have to have the book in my hands and form a complete opinion. Keep up the great work you always do Omar.

This might be the one Marvel Omni I get. Love Kirby stuff and this is disconnected enough from regular Marvel to still fit in my collection. Then again I just heard the price. Wow. This book isnt that big. It looks like a $75 Omnibus, or $100 at most. But retailing for 125 seems crazy for less than 600 pages.

I applaud it immensely when companies refrain from editing older material, as it's a great way of explicating how different things were back then. It also provides a great history lesson for everyone, while also presenting stories people may be interested in. I never condone censoring old material, even when a director's cut of a comic comes out. The only exception is if they were gonna make a "young readers" version of a book.

Covers are not "modern recolouring" as you think. Looking at scan of the original next to the cover you point out, and it's the same. A lot more care went into colouring covers back then, and the colouring could be much more subtle than on interiors. Modelled colour doesn't work well on newsprint, but on gloss cover stock it's a different ballgame.

Seriously, I'm very tempted to get this, despite getting the "Atlas at War!" collection released last year. I've never read any Kirby romance comics (or any 50's romance comics for that matter) so it would be a nice sampler. And I'd love a Complete Kirby Westerns collection! Oh, and if you haven't read Sciolis Kirby biography, you need to. It's a great book!

Omar, love ya, but I've got to correct you--please forgive. The covers in this volume were not "modernized" in their color. That variety of color was standard on all the old Marvel comic covers. Mainly through the talents of Stan Goldberg, I believe, but others as well. Keep up the good work!

As a purist here myself, I really appreciate all your comments and notes regarding accuracy of restoration and fidelity to the original books, but... I'm sorry to tell you that, for once, you're wrong. Because of the gradient shades of color on the covers, you assumed that they have been "updated", but they are not, they actually looked like that when originally published. I guess that printing technology back then allowed for better, richer coloring on the covers' paper stock.

The inking is the difference in the romance books. It almost makes Kirby look like the much-maligned Don Heck, who started off in the romance genre. These books were aimed at girls, and the aesthetic is very different.

I don't recall seeing them in your collection videos but did you ever pick up the Simon and Kirby Library volumes Titan put out about ten years back? The planned romance title got cancelled but they did get through four books collecting their golden age collaborations themed around Crime, Horror, Science Fiction and Superheroes, that last one including the full Fighting American as well as other material. OHC sized trim, really thick matt paper and sewn binding (not always guaranteed in a Titan HC...) and still floating around fairly cheaply. I passed on them when there was liquidated stock in The Works years ago but have been snagging them around the £20 each recently.

I will be getting this and like I wrote on the Upcoming Collected Editions video, I hope that Marvel will follow it up with The Complete Romita War and Romance Omnibus since John Romita worked on a lot of comics that are being collected in this book. I would be interested in a Complete Kirby Western Omnibus. Regarding Sgt. Fury, I’d rather have other volumes in the Epic Collection line since there is about 120 issues of original material in this series. Warnings are better than censoring issues but I could do without them also. Expecting works of art that were done decades ago to be in line with modern-day values and sensibilities is intellectually unrealistic.

Yes, it would! It could also be a Marvel Western Omnibus that isn't focused on Jack Kirby but on characters like the Marvel Horror Omnibus. There is so much uncollected silver age western comics that coud be used.

I would LOVE a Sgt. Fury Omni. Never gonna happen but I would love it. As for Kirby's women, at the risk of getting egged, I was never a fan of his faces either. Everything else is wonderful, literally filled with wonder, but his faces always seemed... harsh, ogreish. This is even more apparent with the women he drew since they were supposed to be glamorous and feminine as opposed to tough, cigar-chomping, pipe-smoking manly men. Oh, well, proceed with the egg tossing...

I would prefer complete omnibus volumes, with complete comics and series. I'm too much of a completist purist for this volume I think. Yeah, I mean not having complete stories because Kirby didn't work on the whole story? My focus is the full stories, not Kirby per se.

The restoration and rarity command the price. Most of these comics have never been reprinted since they first came out over sixty years ago. It's quite amazing to have them available in this quality for that price.

@@IRLYT I am thrilled for the restoration and collecting of the material, but the same work was put into the two Monsterbus and Masters of Suspense volumes and all 4 of those are larger books than this. The same goes for all the Golden Age omnis that Marvel has put out. Some of that material is over 80 years old and the collections are all much larger than this. I’m not against $125 for some of these omnibus collections, this one just feels a bit light for that price tag.

@@IRLYT For sure. The romance comics were a whole new genre at the time but they've been softened into other genres now. Claremont's X-Men was full of relationship drama, and many of the sci-fi and horror books around today have a distinct feel of a "romance" background.

Wow, the coloring sucks. They left it all bright, totally different than the originals. Marvel is stupid for not printing this on paper that approximates newsprint, and shows they don't care. This is just a money grab, with zero faithfulness to the originals. This gets a hard pass from me.
