I think this is probably one of the best tutorials on real world photorealism I have ever seen, anywhere. Funny Boomer I caught up on the weekend with some fellas in my old team from 25 years ago, they are all now with ILM, AL, WETA etc. We spoke about this on the weekend, the thing we all learnt all those years ago in 3D was nothing is ever perfect and is very easy to tell when something is especially on the big screen. This is the most valuable lesson for anyone who is learning about photorealism, once you understand what Boomer has just explained you'll be on a whole new level. Once again thank you for everything you do for everyone one of us no matter what level we are at, there is always something for each and everyone of us to learn. You are an absolutely amazing teacher. Cheers

That is awesome that you worked for ILM, AL, WETA, etc. We never had those kind of studios here in Canada because we would just build models as they came in from the Art Department as construction projects. Those years were awesome opportunities where and never a dull day . . . lol. I had so much fun back then in the film industry. Unfortunately, at that time in the early nineties, CGI was taking over and the those cool builds became more scarce. After film I was fortunate to get a job at a museum which was even more fun as well. You will probably like the upcoming episode (soon) where I convert one of the HO Scale (1/87) warehouses to a sound stage movie studio. Cheers and thanks for sharing! ~ Boomer.

Thanks Boomer! I love detailing boxcars and other freight cars so your project was of great interest. By the way, I met a guy who managed an elevator at one point in his life and he desctibed the use of the boards to move the grain in the boxcars. The boards were cabled to a winch and the man stabilized the board while the winch provided the power to move the grain to the car door. He called them "Mormon Boards" (don't know if that was just a Nebraska term or not). My late father in law and other farmers used to supplement their income in the fall by going to the elevator and "coopering" boxcars (adding the lumber grain retention). One last bit of trivia, on Union Pacific 40' boxcars there were painted lines inside the car near the door labeled as the load height limit for corn, wheat, oats, etc since each grain had a different density.

This has been an amazing tutorial! I've had to spread it out over several days but, awesome. My very first attempt to use artist oils was after reading Tom Johnson's written tutorial, MRH, on corrugated structures on his Cass County layout. after waiting a week for oils to dry and still wet, I gave up and went back to my craft paint - after this tutorial I might give it another try! I'm retired and I still haven't figured out how you have the time to do all you do for the community - maybe a vid on time management might be in order🤔
@boomerdiorama
@boomerdiorama 11 ай бұрын
It helps to leach the oil out of the paint first by spreading it onto a piece of paper or cardboard first. Let it sit for half an hour before using. When it is sticky and thick you use a stiff brush to rub in the glaze or rather filter. Furthermore, Oil paint should be the last "finish" coat you put on over acrylic. If you want to flat coat with acrylic over oil you need to let it cure for a month to be safe. If you thin oil with mineral spirits, as a wash, it should dry in a week. In terms of time management, I practice it through my life and work history. There is no easy application or trick to it. What would you say if I told you to drop all the other hobbies (everything) in your life, whatever they are, except your layout as the sole priority? - apart from family of course. Would you agree with me? Do you write down goals and stick to them no matter what? Do you grind through process you dislike to get to the fun (or payoff), etc. It's a discipline and a commitment that requires methodical and deliberate decisions with pain and bliss. It's a life philosophy. otherwise I can't help you. Cheers ~ Boomer.

Excellent presentation Boomer, I enjoyed it thoroughly and have made mental notes on my own projects using your methods. One thing, post 1979 cars here in the states featured a white dot on a black square background. This was to indicate high carbon wheels after an accident here in Waverly,Tennessee where a HC wheel shattered resulting in a derailment and an explosion. Just a little history Thanks again!, headed to my bench.

Boomer, you've posted a lot of really good stuff, but this short series is absolutely one of the best. There's a lot of food for thought here and it definitely set my thought process in motion. One of the things I will consider (and be obliged to research fairly extensively) as a multi-era modeler is the effect of changing times on car weathering. Wooden cars would have weathered differently and steam era cars got a lot of black crap dumped on their roofs. It should also be noted that forklift damage would be nearly or entirely absent on prewar cars as there were only about 200 motor forklifts in use before WWII. These are all things to be considered and are challenging as photographic evidence for earlier time periods is not as plentiful and is generally black and white.

I am in HO, but am fascinated by your O scale project and decided to look at what is available in this scale for locomotives. I must be missing those locomotives that match the level of detail your project model has as most of the engines looked to be little more that O scale versions of the old Athearn Blue Box of 30 years ago. Can one find detailed locomotives that are not brass? Some like the blue box had cast on grabs. To me, the object of O scale would be to add detail to a base model that starts at the level of the best HO locomotives? Whats your take?
@boomerdiorama
@boomerdiorama 9 ай бұрын
Atlas makes some nice O Scale Switchers (2-rail) that you could detail up as well. O Scale is kind of niche and hard to find stuff because those who are in it tend to hoard everything as soon as comes out. You can find it but you have to search for it and be willing to pay the price.
@danielfantino1714
@danielfantino1714 7 ай бұрын
For nitpickers in large scale, nice detail add on that we don´t see is COT&S date. Yes they appear on freightcar sides BUT also on brake valve. And dates should be the same. Requirements will vary from locomotive, passenger and freight cars. On brake valve in 2 inches white letters, COT&S, date, shop name and who did it. Self propeled cars like Boomer´s RDC are considered locomotives. Is there exception ? Well on private railroad, industrial etc... that doesn´t matter. I´ve seen a 1937 COT&S made in AN (CP Montreal Angus shop) in 1986 !!. It was a former CP flat car sold on private logging railroad. In that situation even if your layout is in 2024, as long as it´s not a common carrier, everything is ok. Expired COT&S, friction bearings, arch bar trucks, link&pin coupler, non air brake, wood body, paper wheels. Not sure about museum since they carry public. Nice touch too when car id appears on trucks. In mid 60´s appeared those colorful electronic color codes on freight equipment. Getting dirty and unreadeable by devices in yard entrance they were not used anymore. Being removed when cars were scrapped, repainted or renumbered. Now we have those small plastic grey markers on cars right sides. Smart also to put lub date on oil bearings like RDC´s SKF..for those who remember mid 70´ that painted black square on right side with a yellow dot in it, means a certain type of wheels that were found by FRA to cause derailment. That sign indicated that the car was inspected and didn´t carry those wheels that had all numbers stamped on wheel rim. Could crack and cause derailments. Later stamping were near wheel axle. Modeling is fun, even more with right datas to foul nitpickers and rivet counter.

oh i hope i didn't come across as calling you racist, that was not my intent. I just always found it strange that all paint is labelled "flesh", but that color is only the flesh tone of a small percentage of humans. it's little things that those that helped continue ideas of prejudice and racism. I'm not saying that the people using the products we turned into racists by any means. If I've learned anything it's that most artistic and creative people are the furthest thing from racist. Most of us seem to have a great understanding for the human family and how we all belong regardless of our differences.@@boomerdiorama
