Born in Gondor, Théoden would live the rest of his life in Rohan when his father ascends to the throne. When his time comes, he becomes the 17th King of Rohan. As king, he would not only rule the realm, but raise three children as a single father: Théodred, as well as his nephew Éomer and niece Éowyn. So great was Théoden in the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, that he is compared to one of the Valar.

I always had the feeling that behind the epic wording, Theoden was just incredibly pissed off after his "possession", by Saruman but by himself too, for falling to despair. So he went as hard as he could, and more. It kinda runs in the family, as his ancestor Helm also went super hardcore, and Eomer and Eowyn have shades of this too. It comes full circle when you realize they all are absolutely disregarding death in their moment, overcoming the fear that plagued Men and turned them to the Shadow.
@GUMMRUCHK

The scene in the movie where he grieves over his son burial didn't phase me as a kid but got to me a bit as an adult. I also liked the scene where his men despair saying too few have come that they cannot defeat the armies of Mordor and Théoden just agrees saying "No we cannot but we will meet them in battle nonetheless." The men of Rohan will keep their oath to Gondor.

Part of the greatness of Theoden king and his recognition is because of Bernard Hill's spectacular performance in the movies. From him being a puppet of Saruman, devastated by the death of his son, his hopelessness in battle of helms deep to his honourous act in fulfilling the oath of Eorl and riding for his one last battle...

I always interpreted the "poisoning" of Theoden as purely psychological, not a substance to be administered. "And ever Wormtongue's whispering was in your ears, poisoning your thought, chilling your heart, weakening your limbs, while others watched and could do nothing, for your will was in his keeping."
@waynepurcell6058
@waynepurcell6058 2 жыл бұрын
The word leechcraft is ALSO used in the book. Leechcraft is being a "healer" and using "medicine" (herbs and such). Healing agents can also do damage if improperly administered. One can slow poison a person with "good medicine" if they know what they are doing, and Wormtongue had Saruman to advise him about such things.

I do wonder based on the other context in this section if perhaps this wasn’t one of the few ambiguous word choices Tolkien made. Also it to me seems akin to the influence Saruman wielded over Denethor using only the palantir. Based on this I wouldn’t logically assume that bringing Theoden to despair would require spells or substances. It certainly did make for an exciting scene though whatever you think of Jacksons interpretation.

Here is a true history fact: The very same troops will have TREMENDOUSLY different combat prowess when their king/leader orders them to "charge into battle" compared to when their king orders them to "follow me into battle". You can find this as true of many great heroes all across the world and time: Leonidas of Sparta, Ahuizotl of Tenochtitlan, Vlad Tepest the Impaler, Almiral Yi the Undefeated, Alexander Nevsky, and many others. Tolkien of course was a great history geek, the battle of Pelennor fields closely mimics a battle of old between a Roman-Goth aliance and Atila the Hun where Rohan is the Visigoth cavalry! All down to the point where the Visigoth king dies in combat and his son is crowned in the middle of the battle and continues guiding their troops.

It's also greatly based off of the Battle of Vienna in 1683. The Turks were besieging the city, and as it was close to falling the famous winged hussars arrived with all the Polish cavalry under King Jan Sobieski; largest cavalry charge in history of at least 20,000 or more relived the city that day.
@maestro0798

I think it was inspired by the charge of the Polish cavalry (winged hussars) from the Kahlenberg during the siege of Vienna in 1683. But it might be both.

It's also kind of incredible how faithful they are in many ways. Yes there are differences, but that is inevitable in any adaptation. They strike a good balance between being consistent with the books while being good movies in their own rights. Often one or the other of those takes over at the expense of the other

Your story telling touched a sad chord and provoked a memory... In Jacksons' movie, when Theoden rallied the Rohirrim at the Pelennor Fields, and screamed, "DEATH, DEATH, DEATH," that too struck a sad chord in my gut, knowing that many good men would die that day. Theoden was a great leader and hero in Tolkiens legendarium and was worth a mention in your anthology of videos. Thank you yet again, Matt. 👍👍

A man of honor and of his people, but what I love the most about him is that altough "why should we ride to aid those who did not come to ours" , he still came and saved Gondor, Bernard Hill did an amazing job for when you rewach whole trilogy all of his scenes are so Kingly, scenes about Father and son, about his people, about his country, his pride, his epic monolgies....I love that character!!!!! He knows what happens to people who double-cross the King of Gondor. Theoden wasn't looking forward to turning into a ghost waiting for the new King to release them from their oaths. He was talking crap about Gondor in Two Towers but stopped cold when he realized he was talking to Aragorn, the heir to the throne.
@rangerofthenorth1970
@rangerofthenorth1970 2 жыл бұрын
@@MarvinT0606 He was talking truth about Gondor and yet when he said "where was Gon....no my lord Aragorn, we are alone", that shows how he is true king that calms down and lets it go, while most of his country were falling into Saruman Hands Gondor did nothing, Im not saying that it could, it had its own problems, Theoden wasnt afraid of any ghosts, he never saw the ghosts and he was never afraid of Aragorn, he was just respecting him, he was just a man of honor and a man of his word! Aragorn did save Gondor, but he wouldnt have nothing to save if Theoden didnt come first and stopped the assualt of the orcs! And he went to help Gondor before any of red arows came any messangers were sent!

I think it fitting and things coming into full circle that not only did Aragorn/Thorongil fight with Thengel, but would come to Theoden’s aid later on. Though I did wish the movies had portrayed Theoden’s death scene the same way it was written in the book imo.

I'm getting so emotional! Not only was he a worthy king and excellent warrior, he was a kind man who inspired those he led to serve out of love and admiration. A truly good and noble man

Your storytelling is wonderfully shown in this video! Indeed, I earnestly believe that Tolkien himself would be roused by this oratory of brilliance. For me, it stirs in me the desire to both pull out the book and watch the movies to compare each version of Theodin’s reawakening. Thank you for this marvelous addition to your anthology.

@Nerdoftherings I have a topic suggestion. Can you talk about the demographics of different regions in terms of numbers? With large armies in the 1st and 2nd ages, there had to have been massive casualties. But also how do you replenish those numbers? Can we discuss how big cities had to have been then and perhaps compare it to cities of today? Elves, dwarves, and men likely have different practices surrounding procreation so the difference in culture and lifespans would be cool to examine also. At any rate I thought this might be fun way to theorize about the deeper origins of armies. Killer channel! Keep it up!!

A cool series idea would be comparing/contrasting the movies to the books. I got into LotR through the movies, but your many videos are helping me realize the greater story the books have to offer. While I wish to read them someday, I like your style of summarization.
